I am a prog musician and a reviewer on a meta-data website (something like ProgFreaks). In my reviews, I often compare my OWN music to the albums that I'm reviewing. Sometimes I directly express my hatred towards the album  and also explain why my OWN music is much better than that album.

Fortunately, one of these reviews gained fame on the website (people obviously like narcissists). In this review, I criticized a very famous and highly-rated album and claimed that my own albums were much better. This review got a large number of diggs and positive responses.

Is this a good thing for my publicity? I feel not. Firstly, most of the readers are just trying to get some free stuff to read, and never intended to download or stream any music (I offer both for free). Secondly, even if they do check out my music, they may not find my music that good after all (as is pointed out in some replies). Thirdly, it's just unfair to promote your own music in reviews. And lastly, I didn't put a lot of thought into the review, I don't think it's much more than a hype, and I don't believe hypes, even when it's surrounding me.

What do you think?

Claiming that your own music is better than a "very famous and highly-rated album" (whatever it is) is just asking for trouble, imo. You're just asking to be shot down in flames.

It depends on what famous albums you're talking about. If it's an album by porcupine tree, Opeth, Tool, Dream theartre, Spocks beard, Flower kings etc. then you're probably correct that you're album is better Big smile

If you don't like the "very famous and highly-rated album" you can say what you don't like about it, and if you like your own music you can say that too, but it seems a little odd to me to suggest that your own music is "better" than the album you're reviewing just because you happen to like it more. Highly rated albums are usually rated high for a reason, and even though there are many highly-rated albums I don't care for at all, I would never say that my own albums are better than they are unless I felt really strongly about it. I wouldn't, for example, say that my interpretation of Jerusalem (which you can http://rapidshare.com/files/265549284/Vompatti_Jerusalem.mp3.html - download for FREE!!! ) is much more impressive than the ELP version, even if I thought it was.

there you go, an explicit example of how someone contradicts his own argument, AND blatantly promotes his music all at the same time!Embarrassed

^ If you had listened to it, you would know that such a grand piece of music deserves a little promotion. I wouldn't say that it's better than Close to the Edge or Selling England by the Pound, but . . . Wink

That must mean they weren't very original in the first place. Wink

I once wrote a novel about this guy called Don Quijote who thinks he's a knight or something and goes to different places with his friend and an old horse and all kinds of hilarious things happen to them, but just when I was about to publish it I heard that some Spanish fellow had already written a similar book. Unhappy

Firstly, I think it's very difficult to be a prog musician *and* a prog reviewer. Your opinion will always be called into question, especially if you compare the music you listen to to the music you created yourself ... and even more so if you're a virtually unknown artist (in terms of how many people know your music) and you review albums that millions of people have been listening to for several decades.

Do these reviews make you more popular? I guess so ... but *not* in any way that might help you.
