Subject: Hox Vox (Rock in Opposition, Experimental)

My name is Gianluca Missero (Hox), I live in Venice, Italy.
The band I recommend is my solo project called Hox Vox. I compose and
play every part on bass guitar and keyboard, and produce graphics and
animations for videoclips and a theater-with-music performance based on
a next record I'm working on.
SHORT STORY
I started playing bass and keyboards in a couple of italian bands during
first 80s, ranging from new wave to avantgarde, but at the end of that
decade I ceased to play.
Last year I restarted to play and compose alone, and I re-released under
CC 3.0 license an old record I composed in '89 (Eight-Bit Deboned), a
Residents-like short record all made with an amiga 500 and released in
amiga mod format: kind of 8-bit progressive rock. My first little
attempt to rejuvenate the genre.
Then from october 2008 to july 2009 I released always under Creative
Commons 3.0 license another 3 records: Outskirt, Das Chamaleon and
Etoile. I don't search to do CDs because (like Sébastien Gramond or Brad
Sucks) I want to play exactly what I want without compromises with labels.
CLASSIFICATION
It's difficult find a genre because usually I change it continuously,
even into same track. Better, my genre is based on using the greatest
number of different genres and melt them in what I think is a RIO way.
For instance, in Outskirt first song is between space prog rock and
philip glass minimalism. The second is prog metal, then post-rock, then
an electronic anthem, and a jazz rock number, and then a classical prog
piano piece, a 5/4 prog funky 'til a suite in 7 parts where there are
moments reminding residents or renaldo and the loaf, but also carl
stalling, bruce haack or fred frith. Closing in classical prog rock à la
Banco del Mutuo Socccorso (I'm Italian, after all).
In my opinion I act with same freedom in using different musical
materials (even waltzes, gamelan, world music, IDM electronics, ska) by
musician as Zappa or Mike Patton (with the right far distance between
me and two monsters of course). So probably I'd better fit in
RIO/AvantProg, or Experimental.
I got a Youtube Channel with my videoclips (3 until now, all from
Outskirt tracks), called HOX VOX BOX

I'm in, music streaming and download (with tracklists, song and album
timings, notes), videos, news.

I don't know why I paste a link to download a record ... and if you click it you are sent directly to download directory, which has no direct access (?).
Anyway, I rewrite here links by hand instead of copy and paste, I hope this solve the problem.

Thank you very much progkidjoel!, and excuse me you too for this mess, but really I still don't understand how it happened. Maybe my Firefox webmaster tools apply some macro to copy and paste if there is PHP/redirect code into (or maybe it's a Progarchive trick to avoid hacker code into messages, who knows?).
Thanks again, I hope you'll enjoy the tunes!

I add a review of the whole Hox Vox discography on Gulf Coast Music.
4 Albums by Hox and The Hox Vox Project, 1985 to 2009
Influenced by: Dadaist Movement, RIO Movement, Avant Garde Rock
Compared to: Actually no comparison, Hox is Hox and his style is his own!
Before beginning my actual review I feel it is a necessity to give
you some background on the type of music that Hox is creating here.
The Dada movement began around the time of World War One,
approximately 1915 and ran until about 1930 or so. A group of visual
artists, poets and musicians, mainly in Europe, banded together to
oppose the war specifically and society in general. They felt that if
the world could participate in just a horrendous war, it was not worthy
of true fine art and they set about creating their own versions of
“faux art”. In the visual arts they produced absurd, surrealistic
works, introducing elements that were totally out place with the main
image. The Dadaists totally disregarded the norms of the day regarding
art, literature and music theory. The goal of the Dadaists at that time
was to poke fun at and destroy true art and replace it with their faux
art.
In poetry, they would interject whistles, duck calls and multiple
voices into their readings. Music wasn’t much better. Dissonance played
a big role in this early “protest music”. Most Dada music becomes
almost unbearable after more than a minute or two.
Dadaist concepts, in one form or another, have resurfaced over the
years as a form of protesting injustices in the world of fine art. Some
modern day examples would include the Beatnik era of the 1950s and the
R.I.O. (Rock In Opposition) movement of the seventies which was in
protest of the major record producers failure to recognize those
artists who specialized in avant garde, improvisational and
experimental rock music. The R.I.O. movement was lead by Henry Cow and
included such artists as guitarist Fred Frith, percussionist Chris
Cutler, John Zorn and Frank Zappa. The original intent was to form an
organization to promote their style of music.
Once R.I.O. disbanded as an organization, it moved into the public
domain as a musical genre. Groups associated with R.I.O. as a genre
include 5uu’s, Guapo, Present and Thinking Plague. Today, RIO has
become synonymous with avnt garde rock(avant-rock) and. experimental
rock. As you will see shortly, some RIO music wasn’t very pleasant to
listen to, either!
It is from this background that Hox and The Hox Vox Project has
arisen. Hox says he is seeking a broader musical language, to better
convey vast and ever changing moods in music. To do this, Hox must
protest and totally disregard the boundaries and norms set by today’s
accepted music theory.
He finds no problem with odd time signatures, such as 5/4 time,
ambient noises, changing rhythms and/or genre in mid-song, irony and
making fun of established norms and many other techniques.
The major difference between Hox’s music and past attempts to do
this is that Hox has skillfully blended the techniques of Dadaist, RIO
and Avant/Rock into enjoyable, easy to listen to, music! His music
challenges and encourages us to “think out of the box” of the
establishment. As a final affront to the established music world of
today, Hox gives his music away absolutely FREE. Just visit his
website, agree to the Creative Commons Deed and the music is yours! In
short, if you have an eclectic taste for music, enjoy the unusual, want
a conversation starter, or just want some FREE music, visit Hox’s
website and download his four albums, you’ll be pleasantly surprised! I
give Hox 9 out of 10 and a “thumbs up” for his remarkable music!
First, let me say I found it very difficult to choose tracks for this
post as they are all great and convey different aspects of Hox’s music.
Just as I finished my list I re-visited Hox’s website and found two
more single tracks which I also included. The first is his treatment of
Mama from The Spice Girls album by the same name and the second is
Complete Control from the first album released by the group Clash. I
also included, for comparison, an original Dadaist recording from 1914
and an improvisation from the RIO period. That way you can see exactly
how great Hox’s music is! After the audio tracks is a short video Hox
produced about a Hippie on Peyote set to his Belief:Greed from his
Outskirts Album. I included this one because I grew up in the Hippie
era!

New album, "Hurry Up Harry" Free download here: http://www.last.fm/music/Hox+Vox/Hurry+Up+Harry
It has some break beat and hip-hop (like "Montego Bay") elements and I think they're very nice. Some people say they are too aggressive genres. But this isn't, and it's binded to that light experimental electronic soundscaping. Also Shpongle comes to my mind (Enchilada Layover). Jazz-fussyon bassing also here and there nicely. "Rusty Nail" is very comfortable song. This album is full of "easy" music. It's a bit like Finnegans Wake's muzak. Nice "rockers", and I like it that tracks are short and continuing to next tracks. The album is some kind of symphony. Also _Harry_ Partch's "Delusion of the Fury" comes to my mind. PS It's strange that almost all the songs aren clocking :00 o'clocks.
In this case, album's concept is that songs are little pieces, and it's and working well. But I'm still waiting for bigger pieces. Maybe also more "distortion" and acoustic feel noises, because the music is concentrating much on atmosphere. Also, I have to say that I don't like the instrument that starts at 0:23 in "Cruisin' in El Monte", though it's widely used in Hox Vox's music.
My favourites are the songs I mentioned plus "Sabre" and "Chase in Downtown".

Oh finally I hear you satisfied, still I'm by your very cruel votes and comments on RYM, especially about Das Chamaleon. Well, I appreciate more a hard criticism than a false compliment. ...of course a sincere compliment is well accepted... I'm not masochist!

Thank you! I suggest you to start with "Outskirt", it's less radical than other records of mine.
