Believe it or not I did a search before I posted this poll just to make sure it hadn't already been done and it came up empty ... So here it is the poll that is the most significant poll Ive posted in awhile significant because though both of these bands are big guns they are very different and in my travels I have found appeal to different types of fans (unless you are like me and really like both of them) so here it is Genesis vs Pink Floyd ..

Both are favourite bands of mine, but I'm a native PF fan. So Pink Floyd wins, but with a short distance. -------------

I love Floyd when they're at their best. However, they can be a bit patchy, so my vote goes to Genesis.

Genesis for sure, what could be as good as Lamb Lies Down?
Except Saucerful of Secrets. Okay Pink Floyd it is then.
But what about Suppers Ready? Of course, I have to vote for Genesis.
Surely you can't vote against the band who made Dark Side of the Moon. true I'll give my vote to Floyd.
Don't be ridiculous, you can't forget Selling England by the Pound. Yep - Genesis it is.
Ummagumma? Pink Floyd gets it.
The Musical Box is as good as almost anything Pink Floy did,
True but what about Echoes.

I like both a lot but PF a bit more. Well, quite a lot more actually even though they have many just ok or even mediocre to barely anjoyable albums and Genesis at their best are truly brilliant. | I'm going to have to go with Floyd on this one even though I didn't have the option to vote. Pink Floyd was the first progressive band I got into when I was 14 years old. I didn't actually get into Genesis until I was 25 as I was fully immersed in the progressive scene at that time and I went back and checked out the classic prog bands such as K.C,Yes,and Genesis. I kind of backtracked. I've always been more into the space rock sub genre anyways but of course they are both exceptional bands. |

Hmmm. A very difficult poll. Okay, I will rationalise. The original The Pink Floyd Piper...was a classic of 60's underground psychadelia, with only a real glancing relation to prog. After that until Meddle, I thought they were patchy whilst they found themselves. Flashes of genius, but overall inconsistent. Then the run from Meddle to The Wall was pure genius. The Final Cut was essentially a Waters solo project with the Floyd name, Momentary Lapse was, IMO, a credible attempt at recreating the classic Floyd sound, and The Division Bell was simply awful, a travesty of Floyd. Genesis' debut was a bunch of public school kids showing promise, whilst the run of Tresspass to Duke was nigh on perfect to my ears. Even after that, the mix of prog and classic pop was, in the main, exceptional. The only really bad album they made was the second side of Genesis, and even the first side contained three utter classics. I love them both, but Genesis pip it on the above thought processes.  ------------- Enhance your life. Impossible poll is impossible to answer...  I think I'll vote Pink Floyd because they were the first prog band I heard, I've loved them since the very first time I can remember hearing them, even though I didn't know what band it was at the time my mom had played A Collection of Great Dance Songs ever since I was young. |

Hey I evened it up!
Anyway the reason I voted for Genesis (early Genesis of course) was because of personal preference really, they're both wonderful groups but I must say I do prefer the acoustic softer guitar sound of Selling England by the Pound, amongst others, over the psychedelic sounds of Pink Floyd. Plus Genesis were more complex and 'epic'.
In my opinion of course.

For me, it's easy. Genesis. Pink Floyd is tied with ELP for my second favorites among the seventies bands, but Genesis is heads and tails above both of them.

This is such a difficult question. It's like being asked to choose which of your children you love most! The first proper album I ever bought was Dark Side of the Moon (at the start of the Summer holidays in 1979 when I was just 15). The second album I bought was about 4 weeks later and that was 'Selling England by the Pound'. However, if a choice has to be made (reminiscent of William Styron's 'Sophie's Choice'), then I must go for Genesis. ------------- Haiku Writing a poem With seventeen syllables Is very diffic.... |

I do prefer Pink Floyd over Genesis, even though they both are awesome. The reason might be that I don't really enjoy the post-Gabriel albums that much. |

Well, I'm happy it's fairly close... I'm stickin' with the Floyd.
I'll be honest, I'm not that into their Piper/Saucerful space rock stuff, although I don't hate it. For me, Meddle was their breakthrough album (Echoes is 23.5 minutes of awesome), and Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall are all fantastic. (read: Pure Freaking Genius) The Final Cut is ok, and I actually like Lapse, and as for the Division Bell...it was alright but it can't hold a candle to 70's Floyd or Genesis.
I won't pretend I'm an expert with Genesis. I do enjoy what I've heard of them a lot, but they're not a band I listen to very often. (If only because I forget...my dad was a fan, he's got most of their stuff on vinyl and I don't pull out the record player as often as I should.)
If Floyd wasn't the first progressive band I came across, and one of my favourite bands for 4+ years, it would have been closer, but that's not the case, so The Pink Floyd Sound all the way!

Extremely difficult - I love both bands, although I guess ultimately Pink Floyd has lasted longer for me. It has always been an interesting question - what did Pink Floyd think of Genesis, and what did Genesis think of Pink Floyd? |

Floyd ive always heard coz they are so popular. | 85-84 Genesis on top now. Too fairly vote in this poll do you have to have heard a good amount of music from all the eras of both bands? If someone has only heard Gabriel era and only heard later Waters era Floyd, they are seeing things differently than someone who has heard all of both bands. I know that Gilmour/Collins led eras aren't the most popular, but I'm sure most PF fans here have heard Barrett/early Waters psychedelic era PF, right? |

In comparing the two I think of what they achieved prior to 76 (i.e. up to Lamb and WYWH). Both produced four absolute classic studio albums in that time and some other good stuff as well.
Whether Floyd or Genesis were better or worse after that doesn't really matter too me. I would base my vote on their best efforts not their worst.
Having said that I haven't voted because I can't make up my mind.
