im fine with $12 for the most part. but $18-$21 is a little much in my opinion, and most of them seem to be closer to that price

If you need to go cheap you need to go used.  half.com is my favorite, though amazon does used also.

I've found it to be a good place for cheap new stuff, which is mostly what I buy these days.  But you can connect with a variety of individuals and independent stores for used and new stuff.  The prices are fixed so if you don't like the e-bay haggling you can find some good deals.  I've seen some outrageous prices offered for out of print stuff, but sometimes you can find a good deal,

I find a lot on amazon for low prices, through their marketplace dealers. Some CDs, I end up paying more on shipping than I do on the price of the CD itself there.  Pinch

When you can buy many DVDs for less than 8 bucks, it's irritating to spend more than that on CDs. :/

Buy some of the albums as mp3 downloads. That way you can lower the overall/average price of the albums.Smile

I buy from amazon & half mostly on the web.
But we in Massacusetts are lucky to have a fantastic chain, Newbury Comics, that carries plenty of prog.  And most of it is on sale the first week it's released.  (Plus, the owner, Mike Driese, is a great guy)

I do believe I got something mail order from them once.  I think it was probably through half.com. Big smile
I remember thinking, a comic store selling CDs?  Interesting.

Hi,

In general, I would say Amazon for almost all prog anything ...

But there is one problem ... they wouldn't know what is prog from a feather up their butt! But you can find just about anything in there since it is worldwide ...

In general, you should search for the bands, even old ones on the Internet and you will find links and they usually have some stuff through them ... and then there are some that do not ... for example, Alan Stivell either has the worst management on this side of the earth, or he simply doesn't care for anything that has been recorded ... many of his albums are not even listed on his website! And I'm not selling mine, even on Amazon!

All the Klaus Schulze, AshRaTempel and Tangerine Dream, I get direct now ... might as well support the artists properly and take out the middle man ... and the prog distributors that don't care either!

I have used Doug Larson a lot, and he's fairly good, although his catalogue listing is not always up to date and I'm not sure he can keep up with it! Eurock is really eccentric and Archie will always be that way! Wayside I did not get good service from and never bought from them again. Musea ... let's say that they don't speak English and are not capable of saying anything about any bands to help us check them out. At least Archie had a sampler that helped some.

And that's about it ... for more modern prog, I would use the band's links or website ... if that band does not have any website or control of their music, I can almost guarantee you that no one will know them tomorrow.

That's a shame.  Wayside is my #1 supplier; I have received nothing but prompt and excellent service from them, as have many others around here.

I remember thinking, a comic store selling CDs?  Interesting.
They started out as a comic book store on Newbury Street in Boston. They then branched out into selling punk singles, which brought in more business.  When they started expanding all around Massachusetts, they became more mainstream, but always has been the place to find independent releases.

Now, the stores are about 1/3 CDs, 1/3 DVDs, and the rest of each store has T-shirts, novelty items, small electronics, and even a few comics.

For any ProgHeads in England and Scotland it is well worth a saunter to a Fopp if you one near you. I was up in Edinburgh for job interview yesterday and managed to make a detour to Fopp off Princess Street. Found the new CDs for Mars Volta, Mastodon and Astra as well as Serj Tankian's Elect the Dead which I have been looking for.

CDUniverse.com rivals Amazon as a good music site for CDs (no vinyl). Their prices are a little lower, especially on preorders.

When it comes to full-on prog, Syn-phonic is the place to go. I've been ordering music from Syn-phonic since '95! http://synphonic.8m.com/ - http://synphonic.8m.com/

Here's another vote for Greg Walker at Synphonic--great selection, fast shipping, reasonable prices.

Check some of the online stores in this links: http://www.progarchives.com/ProgRockShopping.asp -

Particularly the first on the list (I should update it, as I've found many more since, but don't have time).

I've been using CDUniverse a lot since CD Now got absorbed by Amazon and wiped out my wish list.  Another good and now defunct site was Djangos.

Amazon's typically the best place for cd's especially when you can get them used. I've gotten them for as low as ninety nine cents before shipping(which is 2.90). If I can't find it on Amazon I go to the bands myspace page and buy it directly from them or from the record label.

half.com, isn't that old, half broken stuff that people sell, like e-bay? Shocked

I'll tell you; I buy a ton of Prog (it is my "vice", I would say) & I usually buy from Greg also.
But, I will tell you, recently, it is e-bay  & amazon. I used to hate used cds but now, in this
horrible recession, I buy used all the time (if you can find them!)

Also, Laser's Edge is a good one.

Kinesis is good BUT, $4.45 shipping is a bit much!

Fopp is quality, but more for picking up stuff on the cheap, some good bargains, picked up each of the Dream Theater live DVDs there for about £6 apiece (already have them on CD) and Rush's R30 (DVD + CD) for £3. CD wise, the collected works of Simon and Garfunkel for £8. However, the selection is not that good, so anything else is Play.com or eBay.

Cheers 3vilP3nguin. Since my last post I heard that I was successful in getting the role in Edinburgh so will be living there during the week from mid-August and will be sure to make regular trips to Fopp and seek out  those bargins. I'm with you on the Play/ebay recommendations although it can be hard finding some of the lesser know bands. BTW If you are Edinburgh based I would welcome any recommendations of places that may have live prog bands (I know this is a real shot in the dark)? Thanks.

Don't they give you a "combo" discount for multiple items?

Worst (highest) s/h charges award goes to Eurock. The total I was charged the last time I ordered a couple discs (which will also be THE "last time") was actually higher than what was reflected in the cart on the website. Since I really wanted the CDs, I just let it go.  Confused

If you aren't in fact being silly, half.com is a division of e-bay and has been around for more than a few years.  You'll find a mixture of individuals selling used stuff and internet stores using it as an outlet for new and used stuff.  I've purchased a lot of stuff through that site and have rarely been disappointed.  I've also sold stuff there as well.

Congrats on the new job Clap

Can't help you too much on the live prog in Edinburgh, I've not lived there in 10 years, so a lot of the places I frequented then are gone (and mainly listened to Alt. Rock or dance then). I go to the Fopp in Bristol, but have fond memories of the old one in Cockburn Street.
