I got a temporary job for two weeks and at the end of the 2 weeks I receive $1200. I have already decided to spend some on a new bass guitar (my other one is very old and I can't hook it up to my amp anymore because of a recording accident...yeah). One bass I've been looking at is a Fender Jazz Bass. Would this be a good buy? Does anyone have any recommendations for a particular brand? Could anyone describe the Fender Jazz Bass to me if they've bought one or played one before? Do discuss...I need all the advice I can get.

I like the Jazz Bass, but f**k paying for a new one. For 2009 Fender increased the prices across the entire range of products by 10 per cent, including stuff that was left the same as of 2008 specs. Seriously, by the time you have 1.2 grand you may as well look for a few more weeks work and get a custom made bass. Customs are far less expensive than you think if you go to the right luthier. That said, if you can't be assed looking for more work and waiting months for a custom build, check out Spector and Ibanez basses for good value for money. I highly recommend the Ibanez BTB series. They have a 35 inch scale and have an extremely articulate sound but bear in mind you need good chops to make a bass like this sound good, otherwise take a look at Ibanez's 34 inch scale basses like the SR or SRX series. What is also amazing about the BTB series is the active EQ circuit, which allows you to shape the tone from extreme mid scoop (for a percussive slapping sound for example) to a rumbly, mid range heavy sound. -------------

I thought for a minute there from your thread title you were going to hit us up for money.  If I had some money to blow on a new musical instrument, I'd probably have to go for a Chapman Stick.  ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Really, ten percent? That's crazy...especially in an economy like this. If I had more money I would definitely buy a Chapman stick. Ever since I've seen Tony Levin play one a few years ago I've been obsessed with that instrument. I should definitely try to get my hands on one of those. -------------

Hi,
The first one I had was 30 years ago, and it was a Gibson EB-0 ... short scale thing that had a wonderful booming sound for a bass and it was sweet.
I never really studied it enough or developed things further but in 1978 I traded it in for a Fender Jazz Bass ... and I liked it and had it until last year ...
I wanted to get back to that little powerfull and nice bassy sounding bass ... and went to get me a rather inexpensive EB-3 (Epiphone now - Gibson in Mexico probably!) ... and it is nice and all that but it does not have the "bassy-ness" that the EB-0 had ... not even close ... mind you it is nice and all that ... but it is ... by comparison to the Fender ... almost a cheap bass.
I'm probably gonna get me a Fender Deluxe P Bass Special ... not sure why, but while playing one it felt good to my hands ...
I doubt that the trick is which bass and how much you should spend ... the Chapman Stick is the best out there ... but it is for a really advanced bass player ... not for a beginner ... period!
I would recommend go to 2 or 3 different music stores and pluck on a few different basses ... that one that feels the best in your hand is the one that you probably want ... the one that talks to you best ... and later you can graduate from there to one more expensive.
The Fender upscale lines, the Warwicks and some of the other really specially made basses are all good ... but if they don't feel good to your hands and person ... they won't sound right.

| Can't go wrong with a Fender jazz bass. The Highway 1 line of basses should be in your price range. They have vintage style pick ups which have a bit of a growling sound to them. Those are some great basses. |

Just ask in the music store if you can try try the instrument at home for a week. If they don't allow, don't buy.
My recommendation is a guitarbuilder called P.Visser in Egmond aan Zee (Holland). But I guess that's kind of hard to reach for you. |

The Jazz Bass is iconic in prog icons and all, but I think Wizbat's avatar says it all, R-I-C-K-E-N-BA-C-K-E-R. I can only echo the sentiments of my esteemed colleagues.
Fender Jazz Basses and Richenbachers are my two very favorite basses out there, love the tone, can't go wrong with either...

well , it depends what you're looking for my friend , i hear the jacksons have some nice basses , David Ellefson always used some nice jackson J basses , as for the fender jazz i haven't had much experience with these but they will be well made and reliable , but with some insight into the p basses theyre not great but im not really into the classic fender feel on both guitars , or basses. I would recommend a richenbacher , theyre the rolls royce's of basses , they feel great , are of course well made , and look great.. |
