I haven't got a lot of confidence in the grammar of the thread title, but the question simply is: Which song, prog or otherwise, has the greatest emotional impact on you?

I apologize as I'm sure this has been done before, but I thought it could be interesting.

For me, it's Exiles, by King Crimson. Absolutely no contest.

Watermelon in Easter Hay (by Frank Zappa).

Nothing can reach me quite the same way that song does, especially in context.

I'd probably have one of two choices:

1. "A Warm Place" by Nine Inch Nails, which appears in the album The Downward Spiral. Amidst all the anger and shouting of the album, this soft instrumental portrays withdrawal perfectly. I can just feel myself being a character reflecting on the meaning of one's failing life.

2. "Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity" from The Planets Suite by Gustav Holst. Ever since the local symphony I'm in played the selection, I've found the middle section possibly the most joyous and tearjerking section of music.

It's kind of weird having a classical piece and an altenative piece answering the same post, but they both qualify IMO.

But straight off the top of my head, Firth of Fifth is an obvious stand out. The guitar solo is very moving IMO

Well, if Nigel would have finished it I think Lick My Love Pump would have been the  most moving song for me. But since it`s unfinished I`ll have to go with Jean Michel Jarre`s masterpiece En Attendant  Cousteau.

Quite a few actually. I'll list about 4 or 5:

Pilgrims - VDGG
Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity - Holst (as topofsm quite rightly appreciates as well)
Finlandia Suite - Sibelius (I actually cried like a pansy at many points of this masterpiece)
To Bid You Farewell - Opeth
As - Stevie Wonder (I have no idea why this moces me so much. I suppose because every time I listen to it, I feel really, really happy)

There are loads more that have moved me, but none quite to the magnitude of the above.

Except perhaps "Exit Music (for a film)" from OK Computer.

For me, I don't see a difference in my most moving song and my favourite song.

It would still be Awaken for me, by Yes.

its closing moments still send me a shiver down the spine.

The entirety of Tales From Topographic Oceans has certainly moved me the most I've ever been moved by music.  Some notables...

Time Consumer - Coheed And Cambria
Everything Evil - Coheed And Cambria
The Willing Well III: Apollo II: The Telling Truth - Coheed And Cambria
Feathers - Coheed And Cambria
The End Complete III: The End Complete - Coheed And Cambria
The End Complete IV: The Road And The Damned - Coheed And Cambria

(the story in Coheed's concept can be very emotional and moving at times... probably why the emo kids like them so much)

Close To The Edge - Yes
And You And I - Yes
Awaken - Yes
Echoes - Pink Floyd
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (I-V) - Pink Floyd
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Waiting For The Worms - Pink Floyd
The Trial - Pink Floyd
Epitaph - King Crimson

I'm only going with pure prog bands here.  Plenty of Queen songs get me going, but they're prog-related.

"Starless" is definitely one of the most moving songs I know, as well as "Epitaph". I also second "Turn of the Century", though it does not have the same effect on me now as it had when I first heard it, decades ago. Another couple of songs that almost move me to tears are Marillion's "Forgotten Sons", especially its close (and I'm by no means a fan of the band), and Jethro Tull's "Farm on the Freeway" (listen to the lyrics if you want to know what I mean). Ah, and obviously lots of stuff from The Decemberists...

Well I have two ones (in a different way)

1. Pretty much the entire Dark Side of the Moon album, but more specifically, Time. My late father's favourite song was Time, and every time I hear it, I picture to him swerving all over the road (due to his rock fisting in the air while driving). I usually give that record a spin while on a long drive, its like driving with my dad!

2. The song that brings the most emotions to me (without exterior connection), would definitely have to be Supper's Ready by Genesis.

Forgotten Sons definitely passes the test of time. When I first heard it, I was a twenty something angry young man raging against the inequalities of life and politicians sending young men to die, from whatever political colour.

I am now a mid forties angry person still raging against the madness of man and especially the brutal and unforgiveable atrocities all over the world. Forgotten Sons still speaks to me, because it addresses the human angle of war.

Three songs always move me beyond what music normally does.

Into the Everflow by Psychotic Waltz from Into the Everflow (1992).
Burning Rope by Genesis from ...And Then There Were Three (1978).
and
The Carnival Is Over by Dead Can Dance from Into the Labyrinth (1993).

It's the song Ladies and Gentleman, My Brother, The failure by the band Thursday. It's ironic that i don't listen to this type of music, but it's intensity  and pure emotion like every song should be no matter the style. It's true that in this case it's a emotion of "rage"...

King Crimson - Starless, Exiles and Epitaph.
