One of the best things about being female at a live prog concert is i never have to wait in line for the ladies room!!

I have a lot of friends who are female and love ELP... and now I see that valravennz is female and I know she likes ELP... so I guess ELP is the prog band for the ladies...

Well besides being so wonderfully talented... all three are absolutely gorgeous!!!

 yeah that wait in line for the ladies room is a distinct advantage of being in the minority at a concert - particularly these days. Not so, back in the 70's, when there were many more female fans of the genre at live concerts

However, ELP is indeed a favourite of the ladies, this one in particular too ... and they are gorgeous...love that photo ...Hugely admire their talent as musicians - Cheers Linda

Ok, I can’t keep quiet any longer : I’m female, I love prog, and just like Moogtron III’s female friend, I’d be listening to a lot more VDGG if it weren’t for Hammill’s croaking (I wish someone would pinch the little bugger’s a$$ ).

But don’t get any high hopes, guys : I’m 55 and share my life with a wonderful man who (alas…) considers Cher and C.C.R. the quintessence of art. Nothing a good pair of headphones and a mutual sense of humour can’t fix, really .

I admit I do love CAMEL, GENESIS and the other ‘gurlie’ types (read ‘neo-prog’ such as IQ, ARENA, PORCUPINE TREE ), but my ears also perk up at the sound of OZRIC TENTACLES, DEUS EX MACHINA, AFTER CRYING, ANGLAGARD, etc.

Prog is fun. It can even be a passion (ask Threefates), no matter what sex or age you are.

Oh Wow!!  Another female in my age group who loves prog and neo-prog too. I must admit I have not heard (yet) Ozric Tentacles, Deus Ex Machina & After Crying. But I really like the odd round of Rhapsody, Stratavarious, Nightwish and Dark Metallers Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation. I will try out anything new and my latest fascination is Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Explosions In The Sky. I am currently listening to "In Absentia" - Porcupine Tree and hope to write a review for it shortly.

As Threefates has alluded to, I love ELP as well as Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Camel, VDGG and neo-progs Glass Hammer, Liquid Tension Experiment, Porcupine Tree and Spock's Beard.

My partner dislikes prog and is into the nice soft music eg: Dido, Annie Lennox and (God spare me ) Boy Bands!!! Yes - a pair of head phones and a sense of humour is required!

Looks like we woman could make a small dent in predominantly male world of prog rock forums. Nice to meet you, BouBou

Wow.. its nice to have all these females here.. and we not only share a common bond... but we all basically can't stand Peter Hammil's voice!!  How marvelous is that!!!!

And I was starting to miss Shirinking Violet and Petra.  Altho I see Petra still posts every now and then.

And yes, you can definitely have a real passion for prog!

I guess men and women are attracted to prog for more or less the same reasons. Why it attracts a majority of males, though, remains a mystery. I would be tempted to say that women are generally more people oriented whereas guys are more willing to sit alone at a computer and shut the world away to enjoy their music.

It must all be in the genes. That’s why we have chic flicks and d..ck flics, why traditional female professions include teaching, nursing and customer service whereas guys are so much more adept with computers and machinery (I mean, how often do you see a female, hands behind her back, stand and stare at a construction site  lol!).

Prog seems to be first and foremost a music lover’s music, the prerequisite for liking it having more to do with musical sensibility than gender. In fact, I’m convinced that if all of us were to have our musical abilities tested, we’d all score higher than average (alongwith jazz and classical buffs, of course).

And James, your wife’s comments about Hammill sure made gave me a chuckle ! I suppose we, women, insist on a minimum of aesthetics... Too bad, because Hammill is an extremely talented lyricist.

Actually when I was younger.. I was probably both...

But in the last few years, I've strayed away from metal... and now find it a bit irritating.  Maybe I'm tired of being angry!!

Female progheads AND metal heads? Hmm, you’re pushing it a little, FloydWright. Metal is raw-hormones stuff.

I suppose given the right mood, I don’t mind a little shot of adrenaline from Opeth, Ayreon or Devin Townsend (who just about blew me away when I first heard him). Even then, I can only take so much of it at a time, although I can understand the attraction when you’re 18 and in a kick-a$$ kind of mood.

Just don't hold your breath, though: women like Threefates are one in a million (and I'm thrilled to have her with us!).

Seriously, you’re absolutely right about Roger Waters’ nasty lyrics; in fact, they’re downright depressing. What it is about metal is the raw energy that we immediately associate with anger. Like you said, the “triumphal” epic sort can be quite uplifting. I don’t know much about Symphony X or Blind Guardian, but I must may give them a try since you put them in that last category.

AC/DC? I really do like 'em (the raw energy they give off), but it's essentially the same 3 chords in every song. I sometimes get their songs mixed up.

I saw him and Nick Mason recently at Nick Mason's book signing here in NYC.  I think I wrote a whole thread here on it somewhere.. and included pictures.  Even one of Roger... he got a real chuckle out of what Nick signed in my book... it was funny!

I have been away sleeping while you all have been having a good chat on this subject.

I will add my 2 cents worth and say that IMO it is relatively uncommon but not rare to be female who is both proghead and metalhead. It seems all you ladies have and do still enjoy that energy and agression that listening to a bit of metal does for your health - if anything else! 

 I think that is terrific! I am probably less Metalhead now than what I was a few years ago. But when the mood strikes - nothing better than turning on AC/DC or Stratovarius up very loud. I believe that it is a sign of openess to music of all kinds and I credit that to my parents who made me listen to classical music starting from a very young age. From there I went to Jazz - I remember being absolutely entranced with Dave Brubeck when I was about 7 years old. The rest is another story.

I am proud to be a female who appreciates both Prog and Metal - with more emphasis on Prog. I appreciate all the tips of what groups to go try out like Symphony X and Blind Guardian - nothing better than exploring new areas in a music genre I have a great fondness for. Cheers

Oh and I really like Ayreon - Just one or two albums to get to complete my collection - Discovered them 2 years ago through a Dutch friend of mine (also a forum member) - he is totally mad on them. Brilliant music !!

Complex time signatures are what rocks my boat & add mellatron, moog & hammond watch me orbit the moon. However there are time when you just have to scare the cats & stick on motorhead, deep purple etc & let rip !

I must say that going to prog gigs is great - so easy for a short girl to be able to get to the front to be really able to relish the instrumental acrobatics. When we went to see Focus Jim did not see me all night, found a great spot to see & was looked after by a really great bunch of guys with drink & fags !.

I feel that women do need to let themselves step away from all the commercial rubbish that is piped down the airwaves and allow themselves to enjoy music and forget that it is stepping into the perceived "boy zone" !

Sorry Ben, I am just a heterosexual, beerdrinking , slightly neurotic male. And to make thinks even more Cliché : my girlfriend can't stand Prog... or to be more precise she can't stand complexe rhythm changes and distorted instruments, which makes her allergic to let's say 60% of Rock and 95% of Prog(.She likes Van Morrison and Peter Gabriel so).On the other hand she likes sex and beer, nobody is perfect. In the beginning of our relationship, in a kind of desperate crusade for the only good music, I made her listen to a lot of Zappa and GG with a desastrous resultat.. From time to time I cheat a little bit, I put on "I believe in father Christmas" and she would say Hey that's nice, who is it and I say just a crooner called Greg Lake. Yesterday I put on "Tubular bells", it is OK up to the beginning of the fuzz guitar on side one and then  I hear the kitchen door close. Later in the evening I put on Pendragon "Masquerade Ouverture"... and she didn't realized it was Prog, the door stayed open.

PS :Ben,  I don't want to deceive you, but if you want a lover who listens to GG, you either change sides or become a monk.

True, i havent found woman, who really likes prog. Perhaps only something from Genesis, Yes, but i like more dissonant and dark prog. On the other side, i know many women, who like jazz, blues and classic rock and 70s hardrock too.

But its really funny, when you come home with girl from date with romantic mood and you beginn to listen to Dun "Eros" for example . I tried it once and it was really funny, how she stared at me, as i was a psychopat .

Music is not gender-related, nor is anything else. Except for perhaps giving birth to babies. 

One of the reasons to why most prog-listeners are male is because most musicians are male, and that is because women have always been opressed by men, and because women are often 
not allowed, for one reason or another, to explore their music intellect to the same degree. 

It is still not fully accepted in society for women to play rock-related instruments, because of the way it has always been. The society does not consider it 'feminin' to play/listen to rock. A lot of women, but not all fortunately, follow the 'rules', without knowing. 

It has nothing to do with genetic differencies in the mind between men and women; women as a group is of course not genetically different from men when it comes to taste of music.
It is all about the ´rules´ of society.

I am a woman, but I'm also a lesbian . Perhaps that's why I like prog. So those guys up there don't do anything for me . But somewhere I saw a hot pic of Sonja Kristina; now that's more to my liking.

It's weird..I learnt about Progressive Rock (that is to say Allll about it!) from a man who appears more effeminate than most other men I've met in my lifetime and I get all my Prog music from him too. He insists that Prog rock is definitely a guy-thing....then why oh why dies it appear so girly to me?? Is it because it's arty? Where I come from- the Arts Subjects seem to appeal more to the girls than the majority men who do more 'practical' things. in fact, most of the men I've met are . Pardon the apparant feminism but believe me- it's non-extistant. I mean to say that most of the men I've met don't understand classical music, they don't care for the arts, for plays, books etc... But when I met this guy he kinda flipped the tables on my view point. Life is filled with wonderful surprises.

Then I have another friend of mine who's a girl. She reckons Prog Rock is only 'girly' because it is lacking in girls.  Maybe, focusing on the sex-orientated sphere, Prog Rock IS a masculine thing. I admit I'm in love with it, and I have bi-sexual tendancies. And Bald jean is lesbian..this has to mean something!

Or maybe it's just the fact there are so many long-haired men in prog Rock bands- which turns me on . On second thoughts.....maybe not.  Music= the main part.
