I have just been spending some time listening to some of my favorite Manson albums, and was wondering what the community here thinks of him. Feel free to express any feelings you have.
I quite like him for his music, and the conceptual nature of it. Especially Holy Wood, Mechanical Animals, and Antichrist Superstar. Dark and gothic, conceptual and brooding. these are things I love in music.
I try to separate the music from the image, and take the lyrics in an almost Rock Opera mindset.

Probably one of my least favorite (I use this term loosely) artists of all time. Never saw the big deal.

Lyrically, he is stagnating. When his nonconformist and violent lyrics aren't conceptual, it falls flat and feels like no more than a shtick. I also feel he lost his musically glammy edge in favor of a bland industrial metal. Trying too hard to fit into the mold he created for himself with his peak albums.

If you're ever going to like an album by him then I've always found Mechanical Animals is a good one to start with. It's a little more poppy than the rest, but still manson at the top of his game.

The concept trilogy. Holy Wood is the darkest, Mechanical animals is the brightest (still dark), and most glam inspired. And Antichrist Superstar is A fine meld of the two. That is the order I'd recommend them in, and the order the story supposed to be told in. But in all, those three albums are his lyrical and musical peak.

I don't take him seriously. Well, I feel that he is serious about what he does, but I take his message like I take the message of anyone else in music. As a detached belief. As beliefs of character sin stories, stories written bo someone. I suppose complex syntax is in order.
Manson(p) = Manson as a person; Manson (b) = Manson's beliefs; Manson (t) = Manson's existence (read: how he is seen as a complete individual being)
P + B = T
Now, say he writes a rock opera. with characters who believe or feel certain things. Take Adam Kadman for example(The main character of Holy Wood).
Adam Kadman (C) = Adam Kadman as a character in the story. Adam Kadman (I) = Adam Kadman's beliefs and Adam KAdman (Q) = Adam's existence.
C + I = Q
P + B does not = Q
Nor does C + I directly = T (this might be arguable, but only ol' manson knows) As such, a writer is able to make a character with beliefs that differ from the writer. This leads me to be able to not only take the writers work separately from the writer, but also as a character in a story. What is more interesting? A song saying god isn't real, or a character in a song saying God isn't real?
Yeah, I was really bored and wanted to mess around.

Stonebeard! All you still around old bud? I've been wondering if any of my pals were still here.
And as for Manson...he surely takes what he does seriously. But I think his message/appeal/what have you (just everything about him) is geared for the 15 year old, cynical, high schooler...

Well, maybe. That is certainly one "Target Audience" But a 15 year old high schooler might not get all of the fantastic wordplay and lyrical content in his peak work. I'd say one of my favorite points to his music would be the lyrical content. That, and the dark atmosphere that his songs conjure. Looking past his image, you can find a lot of solid writing, song craft, skill, and musicianship.

There is no doubt, as I said I DO like his music, at least the older stuff. I just think the message of it all maybe lost on people who don't quite get it all. As you pointed out.

Never been a fan. I have followed his career with some interest, however, since he's from my hometown (nope, never met him), and it's always fun to see a local hit the bigtime. And it helps that he comes across as a reasonably intelligent guy in interviews.

No, nobobody said that, there's plenty good music after 1989 or 1999, but some of us think Marilyn Manson is not one of those cases, just a poser created to sell rebelion to kids who want to be rebels without leaving the comfort of their houses IMHO.
A market product, and not a good one I believe.

Hey, here's a name I haven't heard in a long time. A really funny guy and a gifted pop musician.
I loved it how he was on Jay Leno once when Shaggy was the musical act, and the grinning Shaggy gave him an enormous hug after finishing the song.

I prefer his earlier Trent Reznor produced albums - Mechanical Animals was good, but didn't have the staying power of Antichrist Superstar. He was great fun to see live, but Bill Bailey has the best quote on that:
Bill Bailey from Part Troll wrote:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0047155/ - Bill Bailey : I went to see Metallica - yeah, 'tallica! - and I went to see them at Milton Keynes Bowl. They were being supported by Marilyn Manson - I love Marilyn, Brian? I love Brian, he's great. But anyway what he used to do to get the crowd going was just chant the name of the place over and over. So we were treated to this magnificent spectacle of this eight-foot freak, eyes different colours, wearing a rubber corset, down on one knee shouting "MILTON KEEEEYNES". Stay with me to the grave, that will. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0047155/ - Bill Bailey : [plays guitar] Milton Keynes! Satan's layby! |
(for those not familiar with Brit-speak - a "layby" is a "turnout" or "pullout")

I had my short fashination with MM around Mechanical Animals and went to see the freakshow when it came to town. Entertaining but certainly not great art IMO. I purchased the successor to Mechanical Animals too but lost interest after that one. The MM albums I own are now packed away in my basement with all the other music I might take out and listen to in ten years time.

A little harsh... although one time I saw Alice Cooper, he described MM as his 'disobedient child', which I thought was fair comment.
Not a huge MM fan, but have to say, the albums I have I really like & they still get pulled from the racks every now and again - probably seen as his "later work" which apparently therefore "sucks balls" (Hmmm ), but my favorite of his is 'The Golden Age Of Grotesque' (the whole album is akin to watching 'Cabaret' after drinking a bottle of absinthe - quite a ride).
Brian's got my vote

Manson's lone brush with controversy occurred in Edina, MN, a suburb of Minneapolis. An unidentified neighborhood-watch volunteer phoned police after seeing a nude, feces-smeared Manson being led around on a leash by a dwarf dominatrix. Officers arrived on the scene, but let Manson go with a warning for parading without a city permit. |

Well, his lyrics are actually quite intelligent. I don't see his music as being for mtv consumption. I mean, three of his albums are rock operas/concept albums. And his poppiest material was part of the story he'd written. Sure, it is a thick and rebellious industrial metal at times, but he is a very diverse musician. And he has a good vocal range (even going into falsetto at times) But, that all doesn't mean you have to like him.
