Me and my wife fell in love with British tv when we discovered Red Dwarf.Lately we have went on a huge dvd buying spree and have been enjoying a wide range of programs like The Brittas Empire,Only Fools And Horses,Father Ted,Chef!,Black Adder,The Thin Blue Line,The Office,My Hero,Porridge,Fawlty Towers,The IT Crowd and Black Books(We LOVE this one!).

We want more, and would like some recommendations please. It doesn't matter if the shows are modern or older.

We also like programs like Doctor Who,Primeval and Torchwood and if there are any shows you all can think of like that please let me know.

There are so many Jody, but on a personal level, I'd recommend:

http://www.sitcom.co.uk/phoenix_nights/ - Phoenix Nights

Or if you like your comedy a little surreal (some would say disturbing)

http://www.leagueofgentlemen.co.uk/newvids1.shtml - The League Of Gentlemen (not for everyone, but I love it)

There are some excellent choices amongst your purchases,Jody.

'Hancock's Half Hour' (Tony Hancock,Sid James etc.).This is an absolute must have!

I would also recommend(going by your selection);

'Open All Hours' (Ronnie Barker and David Jason)
The trials and tribulations of a miserly shopkeeper and his 'nephew' in the north of England.

'Dad's Army' (Another must have)
The WWII adventures of a Home Guard unit that is based in the seaside town of Warmington-on-Sea

'Up Pompeii' (Frankie Howerd)
A bawdy romp set in Roman Times

'The Likely Lads' and it's sequel,'Whatever Happened to The Likely Lads' (James Bolam and Rodney Bewes)
The day to day adventures of two childhood friends. One upwardly mobile the other a work-shirking lay about scrounger.

'Bless This House' (Sid James...again)
Anything that could happen would happen to the hapless family in this domestic sitcom.Set in the early seventies.Sid James and Diana Coupland are the parents of a 'weekend hippy' son and daughter.

'I Didn't Know You Cared' (John Comer,Robin Bailey and Liz Smith)
Based roughly on the Giles cartoons

'The Royle Family' (Ricky Tomlinson,Sue Johnson,Caroline Aherne,Craig Cash,Liz Smith)
About a disfunctional family.Set in the north of England .

If you see anything written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais buy it.The sitcoms that they wrote wewe invariably excellent.

BTW. The Black Books and The IT Crowd are big favourites around these parts...Ooh er,missus.

Brit Sitcoms - some good, some bad, some excellent

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNfQ0ORwSDM - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNfQ0ORwSDM  (takes a while to get use to - but is very good - features Richard Ayoade from IT Crowd)
Green Wing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58GzbUsAW9I - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58GzbUsAW9I (excellent - features Tamsin Greg from Black Books)
The Mighty Boosh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKwQ_zeRwEs - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKwQ_zeRwEs  (has its moments but is very silly at times and some episodes are just awful or plain crude)
Coupling http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdzbXngxaak - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdzbXngxaak  (the BBC version - excellent)
Not Going Out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgxbRQavbDA - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgxbRQavbDA  (crude, cringeworthy and funny in parts - really just a vehicle for standup comic Lee Mack)
Two Pints of Lager and Packet Of Crisps  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adqLksl4SAY - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adqLksl4SAY  (crude and funny in small doses)
Babes In The Wood http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxuxBnLhfvw - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxuxBnLhfvw  (I loved this and so did 12 million others - but it got panned and canned)
2point4 Children http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAMOONE_PcA - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAMOONE_PcA  (The Klingon episode - excellent - when on form this is top-notch - otherwise it's like a cross between Rosanne, Home Improvements and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, but with a "typical" Brit family)
The Inbetweeners http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZxdRtHlqRE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZxdRtHlqRE  (good, not great)

Brit Sci-Fi
The first two are unmissable:
Life On Mars http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y7bFFllzSI - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y7bFFllzSI  (very excellent - with John Sims aka the recent Master from Doctor Who as a modern copper who goes back in time to the 70s)
Ashes To Ashes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR9TE8org2w - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR9TE8org2w  (excellent - sequel to Life On Mars - set in the 80s)

Demons http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxd74vuoSeI - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxd74vuoSeI  (not that good - kind of the British Buffy - watchable - with Philip Geistner from Life On Mars & Ashes to Ashes)

I was going to recommend Green Wing, but thought that may be too similar to the US version (Scrubs??); not sure which came first, there

How could I have forgotten 'Coupling'? First 2 series were excellent

Another recommendation would be http://www.comedy.org.uk/guide/tv/outnumbered/ - Outnumbered - partially improvised, but often inspired comedy; occasionally laugh-out-loud & the children are excellent.

I can't believe none of u guys have mentioned Young Ones!!!
co-written by comic genius Ben Elton who also wrote on Black Adder and Thin Blue Line. Young Ones featured the dynamic duo Adrien Edmonson and Rick Mayall (of Drop Dead Fred fame).
They also appeared in Bottom and Filthy Rich and Catflap.
Shame on u all for not mentioning the Young Ones!!!

You can see Rick and Ades antics on Youtube, check  under Dangerous Brothers , these are a series of skits are a good approximation of their comedy. IMO alongside Monty Python, and Spike Milligan they are the comedy equivalent of Prog

Gavin and Stacey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-T-100FEomg - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-T-100FEomg (current flavour of the month - a big hit over here)
Supernova - no vids Unhappy  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supernova_%28television - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supernova_(television ) Rob Brydon as an astronomer who is sent to an observatory in Australia.
Hyperdrive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1Z6FpOuA3A - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1Z6FpOuA3A  (poor but sometimes amusing Space sitcom - tries to be something like Red Dwarf meets Dark Star meets Star Trek - and fails.)

João's already mentioned Spaced - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXZSV6ojkrI - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXZSV6ojkrI  - the show that launched Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Jessica Stevenson ... very the same humour as Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz -

I know, Peep Show is not actually a sitcom, but it's totally awesome, and I've been nloody hooked on it for a long time now. The think with comedies like this one is, you have to watch them in order because there's an ongoing story.

If you want comedy drama with a tad of brutal realism to it, try Shameless. Possibly my favourite programme on at the moment.

Not sitcoms, but a great laugh nonetheless, my favourite shows are all on Dave: QI, Nevermind The Buzzcocks, Have I Got News For You, Mock The Week... All are amazing.

Oh, and of course some good old what I like to call "gin" humour, Birds Of A Feather. I also second coupling. It's like Friends but with British humour.

Apart from the classic already mentioned I have to strongly re-recommend.

Spaced and Peep Show!

Both are brilliant, original modern sitcoms.

I love lots of ones mentioned here.  No one has mentioned Absolutely Fabulous, I loved that show.  For more recent ones, I really like Extras and Saxondale.

Since Rick Mayall has been mentioned, a favourite of mine was Rick Mayall Presents (an hour long show).  I think my favourite of those was Micky Love ('twas an hour long show): http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=Rick+mayall+presents&aq=f - http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=Rick+mayall+presents&aq=f

Yes Minister and Yes, Prime Minister was one of my favourites.  Though moving off-topic, one of my favourite "mini-series" (serial) was also about the rise of someone to Prime Minister: The House of Cards Trilogy.  Brilliant drama.

In sci-fi-ish Brit TV, my favourites were The Prisoner, and a wonderful mini-series (serial) called First Born (Gor-Saga) which no one I've come across seems to know.

Hmm, I missed suggesting Yes Minister - absolutely mandatory. Despite being more of a drama, House of Cards will probably get some smiles if you have a dry and dark humour and fondness for the machiavellic - Francis Urquhart (the late great Ian Richardson) is the most perfect negative hero ever! Clap

Although, funny enough, Yes Minister is probably the most realistic of the two... LOL

My first reaction was Gor!? Shocked ... as in John Norman's Chronicles of Gor !? Shocked I'm sure I would have remembered that LOL ... looking it up on the imdb - I half remember it, there was another one called Chimera around the same time which was pretty similar as I recall.

Yes Minister/ Yes, Prime Minister is a brilliant satire.  The people who wrote it were insiders, and it is actually very educational and very funny.  I've been hoping to see another satire like that.  We had a terrible Canadian show which was cancelled called "Rideau Hall" which is about the Governor General which was a terrible farce.  And then in the US the short lived (probably due to 9/11) "That's My Bush" by the guys from South Park lacked that knowing satirical edge (just a silly, but fun parody).

The House of Cards Trilogy really tickled by Shakespearean bone.  It's one of the few shows I've bought on DVD (that and the made-for-TV Decalog from Poland).  It's wonderful.  Francis Urquhart is a delicious villian and his wife who is the sort of Lady MacBeth character.  And the character of Tim Stamper is so creepy.  I wasn't so impressed with the final installment "The Final Cut".

I've discussed this show at another forum before and got the same reactions about The Chronicles of Gor (which I have read) and Chimera (aka Monkey Boy) which I enjoyed, but prefer First Born.  Maureen Duffy wrote Gor Saga, which First Born was based on, and Chimera was by Stephen Gallagher.   As I described it then (some spoilers):

First Born is a BBC made in three 45 minute parts show about a human-gorilla hybrid who is raised by the scientist who created him -- he doesn't realise that he's half gorilla (shoulda guessed with a name like Gor). You could say it's part soap opera too; he has a fling with his human half-sister (not realising that she is a blood relative -- they were raised in the same family) who gets pregnant. I found the story very moving. It was based on a novel called Gor's Saga. One of the more interesting elements is how they play-up the religiosity of the hybrid, and his pacifism.

Not a sitcom, but have you ever seen the panel show "Nevermind the Buzzcocks"? Its great, and you can find it on Youtube.  I prefer the newest host (Simon) to the older ones.

The best one hasn't been mentioned yet:

Jam

It's very subtle and dark humour.  I really enjoy it.  There are likely to be clips on YouTube and Google Video.

Also try The Day Today.  It is also written by Chris Morris (and Armando Iannucci who has written some excellent comedy).  They only made 6 episodes though.

Brass Eye is another one of Chris Morris' weird and dark comedy series but I find this a bit close to the mark sometimes.

He also wrote Nathan Barley but I have not personally seen it.

Chris Morris has also co-written with Father Ted and The IT Crowd writer Graham Linehan.  He also is also a cast member of The IT Crowd.

You may find much of his work a bit weird though.

Sorry Jim, I don't find The League of Gentleman remotely funny.  I've not laughed once.

Others:

Although you didn't understand The Young Ones, try The Comic Strip Presents... or maybe French and Saunders.

Avoid Little Britain.  Sorry, it's pure bilge.

Absolute Power I also found rather amusing but not many people seem to have seen it.  It stars Stephen Fry and John Bird.  I actually used to listen to the Radio 4 series as well.

It needs more attention, in my opinion.  Very good satire.

One that has yet to be mentioned but can be absolutely hilarious although sometimes rather near to decency is "Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps".  Currently in series eight on BBC3 and series one to seven available on DVD.

Another very eclectic and eccentric one was "A Very Peculiar Practice".  Difficult to come by now as only series one was released on DVD and that is now discontinued.  I have managed to find the whole two series on bit torrent sites by careful looking.

Endorse many of those mentioned.

Citizen Smith (about a would-be revolutionary who screws up everything he touches) stars Robert Lindsay and is pretty good.

If you like Ashes to Ashes, check out Budgie - vintage stuff about a small-time London crook starring Adam Faith.

The first two series of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet are pretty damn good too - but IMO avoid the others.

Jody if you are into cars and wouldn't mind watching an automotive program, Top Gear will keep you in stitches the whole time. Also, Jeremy Clarkson for Prime Minister anybody?

And it's not a comedy, but I've really taken a liking to Skins since I started watching on BBC America. It might just be because I'm in the sort of key demographic that show would appeal to, but really so many American shows have failed at being just good teenage dramas and this one knocks it out of tha ballpark.

I can't stop watching Porridge, talk about an excellent sitcom!Ronnie Barker is absolutely brilliant in the role.Just received Going Straight and the Porridge film by UPS today, can't wait to watch them tonight.

Also, just discovered Leonard Rossiter and the series Rising Damp and The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin.Clap

These might be old hat to you European members, but me and my wife are eating this stuff up with spoons.Never heard of Richard Beckinsale(Porridge,Going Straight,Rising Damp) until I started watching these shows.Did a little reading on him and was startledto discover that he not only died very young, but he is also Kate Beckinsale's father.

Or if you like your comedy a little surreal (some would say disturbing)

http://www.leagueofgentlemen.co.uk/newvids1.shtml - The League Of Gentlemen (not for everyone, but I love it)

I am definitely with Jim on this one.

Phoenix Nights was a massive hit and is set in my home town of Bolton.

The first series of The League of Gentleman is astonishingly good and I would recommend it to anyone with an off-kilter sense of humour. Sadly, the programme went downhill after the first episode of Series Two.

Don't think anybody has mentioned this one yet: It Ain't Half Hot Mum.
I've always been more fond of this particular show than Dad's Army and Allo Allo (David Croft's trilogy).
The whole 'blackface' criticism surrounding the show is just nonsense (if one actually takes the effort to do a bit of research).

The Red Dwarf three-parter was absolutely atrocious. I wasnt really surprised as the last series wasnt very good either.

Glad you like Alan Partridge, Jody. Very funny but I tend to have to watch it from behind the sofa I am cringing so much. Some of the people where I work say I am like a cross between Alan Partridge and Gordon Brittas...Unhappy

I agree,Back to Earth was disappointing.Pissed me off that they totally ignored the series 8 ending,I was hoping to see how everything panned out.Plus it just seemed too contrived.

I really like Alan Partridge Tony.Steve Coogan is immensely talented, and there are definitely some "cringe-worthy" moments in the show.

A cross between Partridge and Brittas huh?Interesting.........your poor co-workers.Tongue

I am always interested in characters that are compared to Basil Fawlty, and I have seen both Brittas and Partridge compared to Fawlty, but they just aren't as mean as Basil Fawlty is.

I can't believe not many people here talk about Only Fools And Horses. We have the first 4 series and David Jason is brilliant.I do think the dynamic changed a bit after Lennard Pearce died.Uncle Albert is just not as endearing as Granddad.

Has anyone ever watched Goodnight Sweetheart with Nicholas Lyndhurst?Lyndhurst plays a tv repairman who discovers a time portal in an alley that allows him to travel to 1940 London during the Blitz. He falls in love with a woman there and spends the series going back and forth, trying to balance a life in the 40's and the 90's and having a wife and another woman in both eras.My wife and me consider that a hidden gem that we discovered, and own and have watched all six series of the show.

These clips were good though. If a show has a big inflatable penis in it it has to be funny.

So that's where you live Tony?If you want to see the city I live in just watch Homicide:Life on the Street or The Wire.Dead

LOL

The area in The Wire is a bit deeper into the city, about a 15 minute drive from my house.I refuse to go there,it's a war zone.

I can walk to Duff's (Ace of Cakes) shop from my house, and most of Homicide:Life on the Street was actually filmed in my neighborhood.

I started watching it when it first started, but I failed to find the notion of making a comedic hero out of a philandering bigamist in anyway humorous - shame really because the lead actors are very good, especialy Dervla Kirwan. Perhaps I'm wrong in this view, but it came out at a time when all the programs on TV seemed to be about infidelity and divorce, as if that was all the scriptwriters knew what to write about - of course that is still true today.

Me and my wife were at the library today and saw series 1 & 2 of Spaced there and rented it.

Funnier than hell,we watched the first five episodes and both nearly busted a gut laughing.

Love all the numerous pop culture references throughout the shows.

OMFG!

Did NOBODY yet mention the ONLY show necessary for me in all of eternity...
NIGHTY NIGHT

Brilliant, brilliant and the darkest, craziest, funniest show to come from the talented stable of the production company Baby Cow (Steve Coogan's company).

Written and starring Julia Davis -- and they even use Marillion's Lavender in a crazy dance sequence in episode one

No-one mentioned Hale and Pace?

Or Goodness Gracious Me? Sanjeev Bashkar is incredible!

Or Jeeves and Wooster...or You rang, M'lrod?...or early episodes of On the buses...or Oh, Doctor Beeching...

And...
Not the 9 o'clock news...

It's sick -- and starts off very subtle and slow, but hang on through seconde episode and you'll be hooked.  Truly sadistic fun!
