Yeah, I'm pretty sure there isn't any prog podcasts out there. It could be really cool. The show could have music, interviews, and conversations about prog.

A PA podcast would indeed be a lovely thing, but I'm not sure how viable a proposition it really is. For a start, we'd have to look into the legality of including music (I imagine we'd have to limit ourselves to extracts rather than full tracks or we could be in a heap o' trouble).
I've been flirting with the notion of doing some prog-based podcasts for a while now so, should this get off the ground at all, I'd absolutely LOVE to be involved.

I've listened to podcasts where they include music. A lot of times they are talking to the artists whose music they are playing, but sometimes they just play whatever.
But I don't know anything about the legality of it.
Besides that, making a podcast isn't that hard. You just record it and submit some kind of RSS feed to itunes and it should appear in their directory.

Can anybody enlighten me what is a podcast?

I know a lot of podcasts DO include full tracks, but the question is whether or not we'd be able to get away with it! A long long time ago all the samples on this site were fully downloadable cut-out-and-keep affairs, but that had to change when record companies started to notice and complain. Would THEY see any difference between offering a song for free download with talking at either end or without? That's all I'm worried about.
And yes, I agree that making a podcast isn't hard from a technical point of view. Gathering material and organising various contributions from such a large community might, however, prove to be a little trickier. After all, this is an official PA "progcast" you're talking about, right? If you want to go ahead and make your own ones then do go ahead and do just that. It would be rather nice to create something a little more democratic and all-encompassing though - represntation of every subgenre, contributions from several different members, etc. etc. I'm really excited by this idea, I have to say. I do hope some of us will be able to get it together...

The word itself is a rather horrible portmanteau of "iPod" and "broadcast". That ought to give you some idea of what it means, though.
Basically, it's a pre-recorded radio-style show that can be downloaded and listened to at one's leisure. I believe they can be set to automatically download onto your iPod should you own such a device (I don't, so I can't be sure about that bit).

Yes. I get podcasts on my zune. I'm pretty sure that if it's on itunes that it will also show up on the zune software.
As for the "Progcast" yeah, it would be hard to get the whole community in on it, but I think the best way to do it is have one or two people be the regular hosts of the show. If people here want to contribute, they can get on the phone with the hosts, send emails, etc.

Until a year or so ago I did have my own radio show with prog - and for a while also made them downloadable. Which I assume is in the spirit of podcasts, without being quite the real thing.
Had a hard time finding people interested though - too many choices in the field I'm afraid. Think I've stumbled over something like 30 different radio stations streaming prog of various types, and quite a few of them have selected shows available for download.
Personally I think it would be nice with a progarchives net radio though, and perhaps even with selected shows and podcasts of those. But, how would that kind of service be different from the streaming player on the site? Much the same needs covered I think, but the flash player is much easier to maintain than a stream.
Thoughts?

A PA net radio service would indeed be great, and probably would solve the problem of copyright (or perhaps not, I'm not really an expert in those matters). Incidentally, in the Eighties I had my own radio show with METAL .... It lasted a couple of years too!

Well it wouldn't necessarily just be streaming music. There would be talking about the music, the prog community, etc.

I nominate you to be the voice of the PA's podcast if that ever comes to pass. Your smoking hot sultry voice will have the guys swooning....
