I like Firefox, but like Mickeysoft it's started to become a memory eating b*****d this one too.

Have started to use Chrome for some tasks in here now - adding bands and stuff like that. Not inclined to switch over to it completely yet; but for some functions I find it the better choice.

How is it possible , I just changed from Explorer to Firefox today, and was wondering if there was a topic on PA about browsers, and there's an active topic started today  Shocked .

I changed to Firefox because I just found out it runs much faster on my pc.

Maybe that would change if I'd use a lot of add-ons Ermm

being one of those that just clicks "Yes" to all updates and upgrades for Firefox, can i get some advice as to what I should get rid of in its' "toolbox ?
I increased my memory by 1.5 , then bought the new Sid Meier's Civ IV, only to find out that this new version (versus the Civ III that I had and enjoyed more) maxed out my computer's new space Cry.

ActiveX is bad. If you get an email with a virus code, ActiveX will automatically run it and your computer will get infected...

Adblock makes the ads disappear ... I don't think that it's bad for your website commercially, because those who use it would probably never click the ads anyway. I wouldn't ... Embarrassed

I've been using Opera as long as I can remember. It's got the best abilities. Especially what I don't like about Firefox is that there's no one-button shortcut to new tabs. So every tab must be opened separately. and I hate it when a browser opens new sites in new windows, whenn they could all be on the same window. Just clutters up the screen.

Anyway, Opera has become really REALLY slow. It takes up 90% of my memory while loading a Java application. Other than that it's the best in every way. It lacks the support from programs like SpywareBlaster, but there is no need for such. Basically only because Opera still is so unknown, they just donät make browser-related viruses for it. At least I haven't got any. Recommended.

Firefox runs slower but has more stuff you can implement on it.

Maybe the most important this is that IE is not as safe. Just one or two months ago Microsoft had released a warning for all user, asking everyone to quit using IE for a while and change it with another browser, until a serious security threat gets resolved.

I'm currently using Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 ... it's really fast, especially on "web 2.0" sites which make heavy use of scripting. And all that with Adblock and Noscript installed, two plugins which actively check and rewrite all the scripts for safety reasons.

I use Mozilla Firefox exclusively.

However I have experienced a few weird errors recently and I don't know why... one site just shows as HTML code whilst in IE7 it works fine.

I shall try and update it to a newer version and see if that works.  I'm using 3.0.5 at the moment.

And Passionist, I'm pretty sure you can download an applet that allows you start a new tab from the main screen.

Besides, it's being lazy doing it that way. Wink

3.1 is currently still beta ... if you're not the adventurous type I'd recommend sticking with 3.0.5 for the time being. As far as that one website is concerned ... maybe it's broken (bad html), but for some reason IE7 is able to display it.

I think that any non profit website should simply try not to depend on advertising revenue ... today servers and network bandwidth are relatively cheap, maybe changing the ISP would help.

PA needs 3 servers as now:

1. MP3 Streaming + Mailing + Backups (source)
2. Web (site and forum)
3. Databases SQL dedicated, over 2GB of data files

Because of the high demand we cannot go lesser than this setup. I've tried it in the past and the loading times of pages are very bad.

For the MP3 we need a 'unlimited' and 'unmetered' 10 mbps dedicated server because of the legal rights of files hosted.

For the WWW and SQL server the configuration requires Multi Cores, RAM loaded and RAID 5 (for reliability) servers.

Try to help me find a cheap ISP with that setup , please. Or do you have recommendations about the setup ?

I am listening...

I can recommend http://www.hetzner.de/hosting/produktmatrix/en-rootserver-produktmatrix/ - Hetzner , but of course it might be useless to you since it's located in Germany.Embarrassed

I agree that it's probably a good idea to have the audio files on a separate server, I think that something like a 8 GB quad core server would be able to handle both web server and the database. I might be wrong of course, since I don't know how much traffic we're talking about.

Oh wait, now I never should have used or not really actually used an ad blocker.

Wish there were more music related ad buyers even if not prog or officially prog.  Some have been particularly annoying particularly if they inject sound.

It's probably not suitable for you - they also specialize in Linux, and you'll need Windows for ASP and SQL Server - but it might be interesting to compare the specs and pricing.

I guess you're torn between showing many unrelated ads (generating revenue from ad views) or few, but highly related ads (generating revenue from ad clicks).

They don't offer Windows dedicated servers ;-(

Anyway, it now cost almost 1000$ US/month to host Progarchives.com, the forum and the mp3 streaming server.

Sounds like ads are here to stay, or we become a private website and ask for a membership fee !

Other suggestions ?

$1000/month seems very expensive. I have just been searching for some moodle hosting and found the American companies to be the cheapest. But, I suppose with 3 servers and the amount of bandwidth needed...

Keep the ads- who takes any real notice of them anyway? If that's what it takes to keep the site going I'm sure nodoby has any real complaints.

Going through the active users list, I laugh every time I see people still using IE 5/6 and Firefox 1 and 2.
I mean, seriously, do they not know updated versions exist?
I update my browser as soon as each update comes and unlike the poor sodding ancient IE version users, I use IE 8 as a backup when Firefox doesn't work or when Firefox decides to be retarded and not let myspace work properly.
I do enjoy the Firefox 3.0.6 experience more than IE 8, but both are good browsers really, and IE 8 is vastly improved over the older versions and much quicker too so it's quite handy to use when Firefox quits on me which for some reason it decides it must do every few weeks for 24 hours periods at a timeConfused

Shhh, we should not be talking about you know what.

Actually though, I don't know if this thing could be set up as free with ads or pay a little for none and maybe some bonus features, but I would consider it as I do enjoy hanging out here.  Of course at this point that thing of which we shall not speak kind of makes it moot.  And implementation at this point in the game would certainly prove difficult.
