I guess I'm forced to go to Nearfest then. I really didn't want to go, but with VdGG, Gong, and PFM I don't think I have a choice.

I'll probably end up going, it's pricey but the lineup is well worth it.  I thought I'd never get to see Peter Hammill again (in VdGG or otherwise) after the last NEARfest, so that alone is enough reason for me.  Not to mention Gong, Steve Hillage, PFM, Supersister... and the other bands seem good too!

Yeah, they are.  I haven't listened to them yet, but their description seems promising, and I'll probably try to listen to all the NEARfest bands I'm not familiar with (Quantum Fantay, Beardfish, Oblivion Sun, that Italian band) before going.

I have a question about this wonderful event. I am an avid 17 year old Prog Rocker, and I definitely enjoy all the bands attending (I never thought I would get to see GonG, or VDGG live!), but my friends and I want to make a road trip down. My friends however, are not avid friends of Progressive Rock (well one is). The question, to be precise is; What is the NEAR fest atmosphere like? I've never been before). Is it a hardy hardy rock festival with tons of unmentionables going on (which we would never do), or is it a stuck up show, with prude men giving us younglings dirty looks? (as we recieved at a Jethro Tull, and Jon Anderson concer).

I want my friends who don't like Prog to atleast have a good time, even if it isn't for the music.

Nearfest tips:

First.. not a surprise, but Nearfest this year is practically already sold out in patron seats.  There are 1002 seats in the venue... 600 seats have already been requested by patrons.

That means that most of the non-sold tickets will probably go at the box office, since thats an annual pilgrimage for many who found that its near to impossible to get this tickets on-line.  So if you'd really like to go, you should go to Bethlehem on box office sales day.  I believe thats the weekend of April 4th.  One reason why we went patron.. we'll be in Montreal at the Marillion weekend.. that weekend.

My husband and I went for patron tickets this year, with Friday night's ticket.. will cost us over $310 each.  I'm already feeling guilty and hope we'll both still have our jobs by then.

P.S.  to Talm... Fish did play most of Clutching at Straws last year.

So theoretically, the whole show could be sold out with Patron tickets before they go on sale at the box office?

That's terrible... But luckily I'm willing to spend 300 dollars...

Damn, Prog rock really dents the wallet...

P.S. my other question didn't really get answered; what is the atmosphere like at NEAR Fest?

Tickets for NEARfest '09 will go on sale to the general public Saturday, April 4th, 2009 at 10:00am ET.

I'd set up an account with the venue website micky, you can even add a credit card for purchases, that way it will be a quick purchase without any hassles...  Miss the 10am time, it might sell out...

I think it's a great venue. It's on the campus of Lehigh University, and completely under cover -- inside there's lots of room to wander around between shows but most people tailgate on the parking deck. This last year there was a campus police presence, as they're trying to keep the drinking in check, but I heard of no trouble. Oh, and I think the concert hall itself is tops.

And a nice (but smallish) part of Bethlehem is a short walk away.

Ah, now I get it. Most groups of people seem to keep to themselves rather quietly. It's very cool, almost subdued, with people and prog everywhere. I won't promise there won't be someone doing something, but I wouldn't be afraid to bring someone in their teens or their 70's, for example.

There's a LOT of time to sit, so bring something to do!

There are three in Pennsylvania alone: ROSFest, NEARFest, and the new 3RP.

NEARFest is the "big guy" but ROSFest is a great festival in a really nice suburb of Philly. Two years ago ROSFest simply *blew* *me* *away*. I have never been to a better overall festival. OF course, NEARFest was really good that year too.

The first 3RP had an outrageous lineup, including Spock's Beard, Neal Morse, The Flower Kings, TCGT, etc etc etc but I think they need a better venue. It's in the middle of nowhere, although it's nice to sit outside assuming it's not raining. The stage is neat in that it juts out into the audience, but I didn't want to try to look through Rio's butt for the SB show so we got up and sat elsewhere for them.

All right thanks, ill stick with the normal tickets. :)

The other post made it sound like you're out of luck if you don't go patron (which would be a terrible scam)

Oh jeez, that's a little unsettling but I hope there may be some tickets left over for friday. I'm already going to ROSfest so it would be great to attend another prog festival and because I can't afford the 2 or 3 day passes, seeing Van Der Graaf Generator and Steve Hillage is worth it to me.

I kind of wish the lineup sucked so I wouldn't have to spend the $300ish for a ticket, plus about $50-100 I will undoubtedly spend at the festival itself.  Oh well, VdGG might be the only chance I have to see a "top 5" band of mine, since most of them are disbanded now.  I love Gong, Steve Hillage and PFM, too, plus Supersister is a great bonus.  The rest don't excite me, but that doesn't mean they are unable of it, just I'm not familiar with them.  However, I do plan on checking out the Mexican band soon.

I haven't been able to come up with a straight answer from posts I've read.

Is it remotely possible to order ticket's online, on Saturday, April 4th, 2009 at 10:00am ET.

Or is it necessary to either buy Patron, or truck on down the Bethlehem for that date? I was willing to spend 200$ for a ticket, but 300 for patron is pushing my teenage budget. :(

The Patron program is over, they enabled the form only for 72 hours, Jan 24th to the 27th.

If you visit the Nearfest website, it has a link for the venue.  You can order by phone, at the venue box office, and online.  I registered with the venue website to be able to order online and for the ticket newsletter etc... this was before I signed up with the patron program.  If I didn't sign up for the program I'd been on my computer on Apr 4th at 10am EST ready to order to tickets, if it seemed at 10:01 or 10:05 they weren't available online I'd be ready to call and try to order over the phone...  I think on or after Apr 4th, it will just be luck to acquire tickets...

You could always call the venue and I'm sure they'll answer any questions you may have..

Supersister forced to back out of NEARfest '09
It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of this unfortunate circumstance regarding Supersister. Below is what was passed on to us from the band...

Due to the unexpected illness of Ron van Eck, Supersister regretfully have announced that they will be unable to appear at NEARfest this year. Ron has had to undergo a course of chemotherapy treatment for cancer. His prognosis is optimistic, but the members of the band feel that Ron's presence and well being is vital to any Supersister performance and regretfully have had to make this decision. The band apologize to all of their fans in America who were looking forward to seeing the and perform once more and hope to visit NEARfest as soon as the health of Ron allows it.

All of us at NEARfest are behind Ron 100% and we hope to have
Supersister grace our stage in the future. We thank you all for your understanding in this matter.
-------------------------

Trettioåriga Kriget joins the lineup for 2009

Trettioåriga Kriget (Thirty Years War) was formed in 1970 in Saltsjöbaden, a seaside resort southeast of Stockholm. In just a few short years, the band developed a sound that set them apart from the mainstream of Swedish rock. Early in 1974, the band struck a record deal with CBS and released their self-titled debut album. This was followed in 1976 with their symphonic masterpiece, "Krissång," a progressive rock tour de force with the entire second side of the LP devoted to the "Krissång 2" suite. Despite gaining international praise from the subsequent tour, CBS dropped the band and they signed with a small Swedish label for the release of "Hej på er" in 1978. The band continued until mid-1980 when they decided to call it a day. However, in 2002 most of the classic lineup reunited to try out new material. "Elden av år" was released in 2004 and immediate burst the band back on to the prog rock radar, even garnering them an invite to ProgDay 2004, where they dazzled the audience at Storybook Farm. Since then, the band has continued to play live and produced excellent albums, including 2007's "I början och slutet."

After the void left in this year's lineup by the unfortunately departure of Supersister, Trettioåriga Kriget has accepted our offer to perform at NEARfest '09. We could not be more excited to welcome them to the NEARfest stage. Please help us welcome Trettioåriga Kriget to the show!

For those of you trying to call in or buying tickets on-line, I wish you luck.  My first 5 years or so at Nearfest, I had no problem doing that... Then there was a couple of years that I couldn't get thru on both phone or internet... and if it weren't for good friends on the board there... I wouldn't have gotten tickets.  So if at all possible, I'd say best best is to go to the box office sale April 4th.  I did that for the last 5 years.  This is my first year doing patron because the seats we got at the box office kept getting further and further back.

Ugh, I'm only trying to get friday night tickets because I can't afford to go saturday and sunday. I don't really care about seating, it looks like a small enough venue. I've got row X for ROSfest and the Keswick is a so small that you have a decent view anywhere. I saw King Crimson there this past August!

I guess I'd better cross my fingers in any case!

Other prog festivals:  Calprog in CA, Prog Day in NC, Prog Festival in Montreal (Sept) and the Three Rivers Prog in Pittsburg.  Rosfest was mentioned. And someone said that BajaProg was cancelled this year.  Don't know if thats true.

Don't know how much help I'd be for getting Nearfest tickets.  I had to do patron this year myself just to get a decent seat.  And since it was my first year doing patron.. I wasn't that low on the list either.  So our seats are E,4,5.  The same seats we had in 2007 for regular price, we now had to pay $630 for.  Shame really.

Knowing I'll be seeing Daevid Allen and Steve Hillage live is such a glorious notion it hasn't even really hit me yet. I posted this at the NEARfest forum, but since a bunch of you guys are going I'll post it here too.

Hi everyone, prior to tickets going on sale I'd like to get my message out. I'm willing to offer someone $30 just to let me use their Orchestra or Lift ticket during Beardfish's set.  With each day costing $70 ($140 for two days), I figure $30 for only one act of the four that day is a fair deal. I'd also offer $20 for a Grand Tier or Balcony seat.

I figure for those out there who don't have any specific interest in the band it would be a nice chance to get out and see the town, and get a bite for lunch, I would recommend JP MacGrady's down on third street.

If anyone is interested let me know, we can just exchange info and I'll pay in cash the day or the show.

Nick

^ fair enough... but not to f**k with you hahah.   Anyone who misses Beardfish is a nut...  I feel lucky enough to have seen them live already, and as much as I'd like to see the old warhorses like PFM or VDGG...  seeing Beardfish again is the highlight of Nearfest for me. Clap

anyone that hasn't got tickets that wants to get them.... might want to get them now...\

the last row in the balcony is the closest available ticket...take that to mean they are close to selling out.

I went to NEARfest last year and it was fantastic, I had a great time. But that year I loved Fish, Liquid Tension Experiment, and really wanted to check out two of the other bands in the lineup, and I just ended up enjoying most of the rest.

This year ticket prices went up, and Beardfish is really the only band I love on there, and I'm not huge on VDGG at all, and so I can't justify seeing the festival again.

I learned from when Progressive Nation was announced a lot of people's responses were, "Who the hell is Beardfish?" So I'm hoping I can score something from one of those guys. :)

I saw them at ProgDay in '06 and they were incredible... from what I've heard from our European friends that have also seen them.... I don't think it was just me.

Yeah..  it is a shame those prices are so expensive.. and hard to get...  from what I read.. 60% of the tickets were gone before they were available to the 'public'.

In the grand scheme of things prog..that is a good thing I guess.  They make the bucks to continue lives as prog bands..and it shows again there is a market out there for good live prog.

the glass is always half full with me you know LOL

A one day ticket for Friday is not that bad @ $60. It's getting to be like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo price wise. The down side is that you don't have as many bands as those festivals offer.

Yeah, people who've seen them have only had good things to say as far as I've heard. Even if I don't see them at NEARfest, I'll see them at least twice on Progressive Nation, but I'd really like to see them do an hour and a half set, that will pretty much mean seeing a majority of Part Two, which would be fantastic.

I wish I would have known about this festival sooner. Only checked out the Nearfest site the night tickets went on sale. What an incredible lineup! Oh well, I'll be saving my money up for next year. Hopefully they have an equally amazing lineup then.

Is it always at the same theater?

Originally it was somewhere else, but it has been in Bethlehem for quite a few years now. (Which is nice, because it's just about the only good show to ever come to Bethlehem)

I do think they have great lineups every year.. this is my first time going.. but sh*t.. .didn't they have Magma last year?

The best place to see shows like this is in intimate settings anyway...  wouldn't be quite the same in some corporate named arena somewhere.

4 band for $70 or 8 bands for $140 is really reasonable. Considering you pay $60 for one band at most shows now.

Less than a month away!  VdGG, Gong, Hillage, and PFM are some of my favorite artists, seeing them all within a three day time period is going to be insanely epic.  Plus all the others look great too, I gotta research 'em before the festival.

I'm torn right now! I have a ticket for NEARfest, but between air+hotel, it might too expensive. I could maybe use my saved miles for airfare, but that would still leave accommodations. Is there anyone here that's going that'd be willing to split boarding costs with me? This would be the difference between going and not going.

And the difference between me seeing PFM or not. :)

Just bring a tent. :P  I'm probably going to end up just sleeping in my car.

Sure, I have no problems dirtbagging it and sleeping in a tent. But I won't have a car, since I'm flying in. Is there a campground close enough to the theater I could stay in? Would the university tolerate me camping in their campus? Tongue

I was able to get somebody to lend me (for $20), their wristband just for Beardfish's set and man did they kick ass! Sound and performance were both great! They got an amazing ovation, I saw the entire festival last year and only the headliners really beat the reception these guys got this year. Unfortunately I had to go to a family reunion right afterwards, and then volleyball, but here is what I am remembering of the set thus far...

Roulette
The Gooberville Ballrooom Dancer
Into the Night
Harmony
Destined Solitaire
Mystique of the Beauty Queen
Ask Someone Who Knows
Spegeldans
Abigail (Premier)
-Encore-
Sunrise

It was announced last night at Nearfest that next year the mini Gentle Giant - Three Friends, would be playing.  Gary Green came up and announced it himself.

Gong were excellent, just as entertaining as ever.  Probably even more so when you realize that Daevid Allen is 72 years old.  Steve Hillage was great with Gong... but his own show wasn't quite as tight.

PFM last night sounded better than ever.  Even loved their short movies. Some of their new stuff was just hauntingly beautiful.

Other interesting bands.. Cabezas de Cera from Mexico were great.  Their guitarist can play the hell out of anything with a string.  Quantam Fantay from Belgium, a more talented Ozrics...less pushing buttons and more actual music.  We bought their cd.  Beardfish... not really prog, not really Zappa like either (as advertized); actually they reminded me of a Swedish "Govt Mule"... but a great show to watch never the less.  Their bass player moonwalks the entire show.  Made it hard to get any pictures of him... but I tried.

Two bands that friends have liked their cds... but I found them extremely boring live - D.F.A. and Trettioariga Kriget.

Overall, it was a great Neafest.  I didn't walk out on a single band.  Altho I had a bit of a nap during the 2 mentioned above.  :-)

Ah yes... Friday night.  Sorry forgot..

VDGG were ok... but they also weren't exactly tight on the music, you could tell they needed a little more rehearsal time.  Peter Hamill's voice is even worse than it was before, if thats possible.  I was missing all those instrumental jams they use to do...

LOL Well written; pretty funny, I have to admit. I personally love Hammill's singing (and VdGG as well), but I do understand how it can turn people off. Definitely a 'love it or loathe it' voice.

I'm registering just to let you know that VDGG were spectacular, in my opinion.

Hammill was in fine spirits, and the unadulterated skills displayed by Banton and Evans are undiminished and thrilling to see / hear in the flesh.

Some solid gold vintage VDGG (Sleepwalkers, Lemmings / Cog, Man Erg) and some less obvious material (Meurglys III, and damned good too, reggae be damned) rubbed shoulders with new songs from Trisector.  The 4 or so new songs stood up surprisingly well to this fan, and I will be purchasing the album this week on the strength of 'All the before' and 'Over the Hill'.

A labyrinthine performance that deserved the rapturous response from the crowd.  Although I would much rather he had been 'Present (pun intended)', I didn't miss Jaxon during the set, as Banton filled in admirably on a distorted lead that often sounded like the Quartet was up there in full force.

I was only there for Friday (on the way with my band to play a show in NYC the next day) so cannot comment beyond Steve Hillage, but induge my 2 cents here:

I am a big fan of Mr. Hillage, from Uriel right up to System 7, and I thought he was terrible.  Almost constantly, his guitar would cut out, which begged the question "Why didn't you bring another guitar, like almost any touring musician?'.  The band seemed under rehearsed and the set was peppered with mistakes.  Steve didn't seem to give a toss...  By the time they came on to play 'All too much' for the second time (WHY?!?) the rest of the crowd seemed to be as luke-warm as me.  I would have been disappointed, but the trip from GA to PA was worth it for VDGG.

I'll be there next year for Gentle Giant (redux) for sure!

lucky I guess... long time patrons said this was the best one yet.

start counting down to next year... a strong rumor going around to who is playing next year.  ALL prog fans will want to see this..err... reunion if true.

ahhhh...Gary Green was there.  Scuttle-butt is they may reform and play next year's Nearfest playing a set of live gems from their back catalog that they didn't do in 70's. Considering the person I heard it from seems to know lot of higher up's there.. take it for what it's worth.  It is ok to dream at least hahah.

same here... but like I said. It is ok to dream....   VDGG was incredible.   Got a new appreciation for them seeing them live.  Lemmings fell flat without David Jackson.. but the rest...  I dug it.  Especially when followed by the sonic disaster that was Steve Hillage hahha.
