Hey all... i'm looking for recommendations on bands that play a sort-of floaty, dreamy, atmospheric Prog Rock similar to 70's Camel (esp. Moonmadness era). I recently discovered the band Asia Minor via Prog Archives and it's one of the greatest discoveries i've made in a long time! Seriously under-rated! They're one of the best i've ever heard in terms of evoking a dream-like, sad, rainy atmosphere (without being TOO sleepy or laid back -- they still "rock" at times). They get the balance right. There are too few bands who create this feeling in me... I want to find more bands with this atmospheric quality. p.s. - Pink Floyd is too obvious.  ------------- I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity... |

| You'd probably like PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi), particularly Per Un Amico. A bit more obscure, and probably a bit more active and jazz-tinged, there's also the excellent Maneige (Les Porches is the obvious one, maybe get Ni Vent... or the debut as well). |

Thanks for the recommendations!  Premiata Forneria Marconi is the only band i am familiar with, and i think they are excellent! I know Per Un Amico and the Jet Lag albums... and i definitely love the atmosphere they evoke. If you enjoy Camel's debut, then go with the Canterbury Scene, you can't miss it. Try Caravan In the Land of Grey and Pink. If you like Rain Dances and Breathless jazzy side, again go with the Canterbury Scene and Jazz Fusion/Rock sub-genre. If you like their classics, well then: Snow Goose? You must have already heard The Lamb Lies Down... So I'm without recomendations here. Moonmadness? again, some Genesis(that I'm sure you already know) or some Jazz Fusion. Mirage? Lots of classics bands you can listen from this, that you already know. Jethro Tull, Genesis(The Knife), others... Then if you like their new stuff, Rajaz and A Nod and a Wink, then you should already know The Division Bell by Floyd. But if you really want some DREAMY stuff, then go with Krautrock or Psych scene. Eloy's Ocean, Ashra's Blackouts, others.. Hope it helps. |

Ah yeah, i like Eloy! They seem to be a little hit-or-miss for me though. Some of their songs are very strong and can totally drown you in their atmosphere. Yes, you're right that i'm already well versed in Genesis. I'm not AS well versed with the Canterbury scene though; i do like Caravan's Grey and Pink and i really like Hatfield and the North... besides that i don't know too much about it. Any more obscure Canterbury bands to recommend?  ------------- I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity... |

Thanks for the recommendation of Asia Minor will have to check them out ...also recommend Steve Hillage for Green, Motivation Radio and Open

If you can find them, there is also a catalonian band called Gotic ( http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=618 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=618 ), who play very mellow music, a bit of a mix between Camel and Harmonium, but not as powerful as Asia Minor. If you wan't some of that dreaminess of Camel and Asia Minor, with a bit of Gentle Giant, you could try Beduínos a Gasóleo ( http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=3643 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=3643 ). ------------- Bigger on the inside. |
