Subject: Goodbye!

I'm leaving this website, and the forum. Thanks to everyone ... I participated in so many discussions over the years, and it's breaking my heart to leave it all behind. But it seems that I can't participate here anymore without occasionally mentioning my own website ... I still think that both PA and PF can simply co-exist. But apparently to most collabs here it is a nuissance (a "pain in the ass", in plain words) and only tolerated because of the genre charts, and this situation is slowly but steadily wearing me out. So, I'd rather continue at PF on my own than constantly trying to make compromises and doing things both for PF and PA. Of course the genre charts will be available for PA as long as you need them ... but I can't be here any longer, because everything would remind me of how my website is being ignored. Even if this means that I'll be the only active user of PF ... then so be it!

Peace.

Firstly Mike, I want to make it quite clear that I believe your contribution to this web site has been nothing short of phenomenal over the past several years; a contribution which I have benefited greatly from during that time. So, if I appear to be critical in what I am about to say, please view it constructively, and in that light.

There is no-one on this site who will deny that in ProgFreak, you have developed an incredibly impressive statistical tool, which enable progressive fans to get lost in for hours at a time to tag, label and create charts for their favourite music. Its capability is truly impressive, and I personally don’t know of anything in the marketplace, which comes anywhere close to it, in terms of quality. You might call it the ‘Bugatti’ of rating sites.

The problem seams to lie in the fact that some of us, less sophisticated types remain happy driving around in our Peugeots, because we feel comfortable in them, and they are really all we seek in life. Now, this parallel existence has existed within PA quite happily for over 3 years now; some of us driving around PA in your lovingly crafted Bugatti, while others are in Peugeots, and others still are happy on their push-bikes.

I think however that something changed, at about the time you left the Prog Metal Team. Because you had no genre teamwork to concentrate on any longer, you poured all your energies into trying to improve your Bugatti. You refined it, added extra buttons, and have tried to make it more user-friendly, in a concerted effort to get other PA members to ditch their Peugeots and buy in to what you were doing.

Because you have (inevitably) invested so much in it emotionally, you started pushing it in every conversation, in an attempt to convert people to your way of thinking. Having so much faith in your product, you simply cannot believe that any self respecting PA’er’s life can be complete without ProgFreak in their daily lives. Under the misconception that if you push something hard enough and for long enough, people will relent, you took it very personally when they didn’t.

Now, I’m quite confident that there is no-one on this web site who has deliberately boycotted ProgFreak, because you are its founder. If there are such people, then they are very shallow and spiteful, and not worthy of your time and attention. There are however people who simply don’t think membership will enhance their enjoyment of the music they listen to, while others find it all a bit scary and intimidating.

The problem is, you have (in my opinion, wrongly) taken this to be a personal slight, and have increasingly alienated some with your over-wrought outbursts about how we are ‘ripping your heart out with our bare hands and throwing it into the kitchen blender’ every time we ignore your posts. Now, I’m no salesman, but I would guess that isn’t the most effective way to attract new business, and a possible way of existing users.

Now, I speak from the heart when I say that this makes me very sad. You may not believe it when I say this, but I am very pleased for you, when others decide to join your site; networking and friendship is, after all, what we are all here for. That said, few products, no matter how earth-shattering they might be, will suit everyone. Unfortunately, this is something you fail to accept, and I am not afraid of standing up to you, when I think you have gone too far.

Recently, for reasons we have discussed, I think you crossed the line, in policing a thread, stipulating that only those with Prog Freak accounts could post in. That is simply wrong. It is like telling the Peugeot drivers that a road has been closed off to them, because they are driving the wrong type of vehicle, and for that reason, I am not sorry for the way I spoke to you.

That said, if a break away from PA is something which you would benefit from, and help you regain some of your otherwise very clear perspective, that might not be a bad thing. I will stress that because of all the good that you have done for this site over the years, you permanent departure will ultimately make PA a poorer place. Whatever you decide Mike, I wish you nothing but happiness.Smile

Best Wishes

Jared

Hmmm, MikeEnRegalia, tough choice you made, after so many things done here. I can't contest your decision for leaving PA , well, for me is like another great collaborator and discussion companion gone with no trace of coming back, like another dutch gentleman who left the PA this summer.  Shocked

Hardly a good decision. I don't think your absence here will add popularity to your site.

It's not too late to change your mind.

^^ as I see it, my presence here does not add much popularity to it either Wink ... of course I know that many (if not all) current users of PF originated from PA, but let's be honest: I'll have to try to get users on my own, instead of begging for a few "bread crumbs" here all the time.

What you people need to understand about PF are three basic things:

1. I spent a *lot* of time building it ... at least several hours per week for the last 2-3 years.
2. I'm not making any money with it. Yes, it does contain some Amazon/CDBaby affiliation links, but up to this day I've made about $60 with them. Considering that I've been paying 50 € per month for the server for the last three years, it's a bad deal ...
3. PA does profit from PF.

So maybe some you you can see how frustrated I am to see that most of you are simply ignoring it. I realize that tagging and rating is not for everyone, but I really had my hopes that more people would be sympathetic to the cause.

I'm sorry to see this happen, but I'm not really surprised. You have a dedication to your site, and it must be frustrating to see negativity on a product you've put so much of your heart and soul into.

As I see it it's a niche service you provide there - I tried recruiting a bit for you a couple of years back over at RYM, but even there interest were so-so. For those enjoying the finer details of music rating it's a good product though; hope for your sake that you'll mange to find more kindred souls to participate in the project and give you positive feedback on a regular basis.

I'll continue using it in the simple manner I've done so far as long as the service is available.

I guess you can spend less time for PA and more for your site, but it is not necessary to say goodbye.

I'm not sure whether you are referring to the now defunkt "top albums of 2008" thread that I started a while ago. If you do: Well, it was only in that one thread that I created, and there was another one (started by stonebeard) which was open for anyone. It simply were two different concepts, and to see that some people perceive this as some kind of "obligation" only adds to my frustration.

yes, that's exactly the point. Being here always reminds me of how few people use PF ... it's particularly frustrating in threads where people ask for things which I've implemented at PF. Yet when I mention my website I get flamed or am being made fun of ... I'd rather have no conversation than go through that every day.

As I see it it's a niche service you provide there - I tried recruiting a bit for you a couple of years back over at RYM, but even there interest were so-so. LOL I remember those threads at RYM ... thanks for your support, but I think that - like here - it's a lost cause. Even if my website is really different from PA or RYM, users of those website will always view it as some kind of intruder ... and they'll be loyal of their primary site.

I'll continue using it in the simple manner I've done so far as long as the service is available.

Please, I already said it in the other thread: The manner in which you're using my website is exactly like I hoped for. You don't have to rate dozens of albums each week, that would be a chore. No matter how dedicated or motivated you may be, such a schedule will wear you out sooner or later ... be it at PF (with rating and tagging) or at PA (with reviewing and arguing genre decisions).

No, no and no. What's happening Mike? We all value your contributions and you know we all like you and your website even if we sometimes get lost in it.

I actually created a few top-2008 lists for me. There are a few albums missing there like Cradle of Filth's latest which is excellent (maybe it's there already.. I didn't look for it last time I tried PF)... Many of us try... Mike, I don't understand youre position. If someone complained about a thread opened only for PF purposes, ok, that happens. People have the right to complain and also you to explain. And as you can see, you have been given total support by Admins and Members.

Your contributions don't end with the PF chart. It's in the discussion side of things where your input has been even more valuable. Remember Metallica? Your input was, with Certf1ed's, the main reason they're here. And that can be said of many cases. You basically created the prog-metal subdivision in 3 genres and wrote the bios... Some people think they can be made even better, OK, maybe, but that doesn't mean the original, hard work wasn't fantastic.

You have to stay. Bitte, Herr. EnRegalia Tongue, sie mussen hier bleiben. (my german is so rusty....)

Well, even though I don`t undrestand why you`re leaving all the best just the same. I have a radio show and I just stuck a section in my personal website which plugs the music I`ll be playing ( mostly Kraut Rock & Space Rock ) and I also give a plug to this site. I really don`t see why you can`t do both. One compliments the other. If anyone wants to check out the section of my crappy isnane site entitled : Ian`s Compendium Of Freaked Out Sounds & Grooves just go to   timestop.has.it    and scroll down to " The Eye ". It`s not finished yet. I want fit in a couple of more links including Progjester`s myspace ! The compendium section will be ready this weekend as I need a friend to help me with an outside link for album photos and release info etc..
Once again, all the best I`ll keep your site referenced and check up on it`s progress..

Come to think of it - I think the only people who have really left the site after I joined are the ones who one day simply didn't show up anymore. It's never the ones announcing their departure - I expect Erik back any day now.... Geek

Not an obligation, but I don't see it as a problem just because it failed to meet your expectations. PA posted a thread some time ago about unreviewed albums. It would be nice if we all went full tilt and took care of them all ASAP, but as a community, with a volunteer core who manage things, you can only ask, not insist.
I don't see how it would be taken personally that there wasn't sufficient participation by PA members.

So far, so good ... thanks!Big smile

Now, this parallel existence has existed within PA quite happily for over 3 years now; some of us driving around PA in your lovingly crafted Bugatti, while others are in Peugeots, and others still are happy on their push-bikes.

ok ... a misunderstanding seems to unfold. You make it appear like people would have to make a choice: either PA (Peugeot) or PF (Bugatti). This couldn't be farther from the truth. Not only can people use both websites simultaneously ... my website is also not a Bugatti. In fact it can also be a push-bike or Peugeot, if you're so inclined. Have a look at this page:

http://progfreak.com/home/users.xhtml?path=top_lists - http://progfreak.com/home/users.xhtml?path=top_lists

On the right side there are the per user charts ... you'll find that some users are only assigning a rating. Some are also assigning a main genre, and there are those who assign a plethora of tags. My website does not impose complexity onto users ... it may seem so occasionally, because I still need to streamline some parts of the user interface, but it is not designed to be inherently complex.

No. I'm definitely not trying to "lure people away" from this website. I've always seen my website as something people could use in addition to PA. Sure, you can also post reviews at PF, but you don't have to. I added this facility because I want my website to be a place where you can simply do everything you want, on any level you want. A website for rating music would simply be incomplete without a reviewing facility.

You may have a point there. But of course I know that when I push things too hard people will turn away. Ironically Tony posted a week ago that he didn't think I was promoting my website too much, but that didn't stop him to move my thread into no man's land (I understand why you did it, Tony, but I hope you also understand why it makes me feel sad. At least I know now that my website is no closer to PA than any other site which you find in "Get the Word Out").

I think that one of the biggest misconceptions about my website is that it is complicated. Yes, it offers complex features, but you don't have to use those. The most important thing about my website is that it combines a wide range of approaches. You can use it if you simply want to assign 5 star ratings to your favorite albums, you can also use it if you want to assign twenty tags to each album, or if you want to rate albums on the track level. You can also start simple and add details later, or you can be very detailed about one artist and more general about others. *You* decide.

That's true. However, what harm could there be done? 500 clicks in my thread, and maybe 3-4 new people decided to give it a try (thanks guys!), and now the thread is gone.Wink No, it seems like I simply have to accept the fact that PA and PF can't get along.

At the risk of repeating myself: My website is designed to suit everyone. If it doesn't suit you: Please tell me what's bothering you, and I'll fix it. Even if you don't want to join, I'd still be interested in why, so I can make it better for other users.

No, No, No. Can't you understand that this was a simple misunderstanding? And about "policing you" ... did I really? I checked the thread again, and unfortunately I edited it and can't remember why, but here's the current version (from a few hours after you posted your list):

"sorry, but this thread is intended for people who enter the data at PF ... I'd be glad if you entered the albums there, all you need to do is to log in and assign a rating to the albums.Embarrassed"

Now is that so horrible? All I did was *ask* you to enter the data at PF, and I wasn't expecting some kind of spanish inquisition. Just another misunderstanding ... Embarrassed

Best Wishes

Jared

Maybe I won't leave completely, but the user known as MikeEnRegalia is gone ... I'm not a collaborator anymore, not even a honorary one. I don't want to over-dramatize things ... I think another way of putting it is that I'm simply burned out from this parallel co-existence (as you put it). So, before I'm losing my mind, I need to choose a side and then stick with it.

I have been tempted to leave PAs on many occasions but announcing that you are leaving, I believe, is not the way to go.Keep your powder dry and just step back for a while.

If you can work on PF and PAs in tandem,I believe that that would be a sysyphian task.

Anyway, the very best of luck in whichever path(s) you eventually choose to take.

^ I guess you're right ... I'll stick around, but simply less frequently, and under a different name. I agree that working for PF and PA simultaneously would be too much for anyone, but I'd like to point out that *using* both website should be no problem for anyone. Like I tried to explain to fandango, how much time you spend at PF is entirely up to you. For example, submitting a rating for an album takes like 2 clicks ... it's not a time consuming process.Wink

^ that joke is getting old ... Wink

But not only the user name has changed ... I'll mention my website far less from now on. Of course the new user name kind of gives it away, and I'll probably put a link in the sig, just like some other members link to their myspace pages. But I won't create any threads which are dedicated to PF, except maybe for the Get the Word Out section, if there are important changes. Of course all collab activities are also a thing of the past ... except for the genre charts at PF, which I'll of course maintain for as long as PA needs them.

"I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello."  Welcome back, Mike.  Since your old account is still active for now, can I purchase it? ;)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daoV-LsINiA - I'd buy that for a dollar!

Incidentally, I rated some albums at PF today, and wrote some album comments.  Your site is addictive, and I think I might be using it a lot more in the future.  I like the changes.  I'm sorry to see that you're limiting your involvement at this site, but could totally understand you wishing to concentrate more on your own site.  I can see commercial potential in your developments too.
