With all the polls about guitarists, keyboard players and drummers, I thought it would be nice to cover violinists. What are your thoughts concerning the above mentioned? My personal favorite is Jean Luc Ponty's "Enigmatic Ocean" followed by Jerry Goodman's work on "Birds of fire".

Once again, I will give the name of a great prog violinist who is missing in the violinist polls : Marcus VIANA, leader of the brazilian band Sagrado coraçao da terra.

how about David Cross? I don't know how talented he really is compared to JLP, but his work definitely adds a lot to several KC tracks.

Talking only about Prog' violinists (Not to contradict Billyshears 67 ) I have to stay with  Robbie Steinhardt, without him, Kansas is just another USA aqverage Prog band, this was proven when he left the bad during the 80's and they released the most horrendous albums possible (Drastic Measures, Power and In the Spirit of Things) Not even the Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the excellent Andrew Powell could save Power.

In the album Live at Whiskey, Robbie was replaced by the competent violinist  David Ragsdale and they played most of their most famous tracks, but without Robbie, there was no personality.

His technique is amazing and he adds a special feeling hard to find.

Which guitarist who has been unforgivably omitted from the companion  guitarist poll, has played with the following fiddlers:

Darryl Way
Eddie Jobson
Jerry Goodman
Jean Luc Ponty
Didier Lockwood

and has played/been recorded on violin too?

Holdsworth????

Allan Holdsworth... who played some violin in a Tempest song for their 1973 eponymous debut album. Tempest was an art-rock band drummer Jon Hiseman formed after his Colosseum days.

Posted By: Dick Heath

FAO: RL and CI

Bullseye, and you'll find him playing fiddle on Gordon Beck's album Sunbird, as well as the first Tempest album

These sorts of poll gets me going, due to their incompleteness -  relegating the poll to no more than a minor piece of fun. Fishing through my collection (and without going deeply to too many European or Japaness bands), the following names come up (and I've added a few viola and cello players to think about too):

Violin:

Ed Alleyne-Johnson: New Model Army, Solo

Darol Anger: Turtle Island Quartet etc.

Dave Arbus: East Of Eden, session violinist for Who’s Next

Papa John Crech: Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna, solo

Davis Cross: King Crimson, solo

Yvette Devereaux: K2

Mark Feldman: Magic Band, Mahavishnu Project, Tunnels, etc.

Jerry Goodman: Flock, Mahavisnhu Orchestra, Goodman/Hammer, Dregs, sessions, Neverwasneverwillbe, Gary Husband’s Force Majeure solo

Rick Grech: Family, Blind Faith

Sugarcane Harris: Bluesbreakers, Zappa

Allan Holdsworth: Tempest, Gordon Beck

Simon House: High Tide, Hawkwind(?)

Eddie Jobson: Curved Air, Roxy Music, Mothers Of Invention, UK, solo, TV theme music, etc.

Nigel Kennedy: solo classic, rock and jazz

Steve Kindler: Jan Hammer Group, Mahavishu

Caryn Lin: solo (her Tolerance Of Ambiguity is IMHO the best prog violin album in the last decade)

Didier Lockwood: solo

Jean Luc Ponty: Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra, solo

Ric Sanders: Soft Machine, Etheridge/Sanders. Fairport Convention

(Levi) Shankar: Zappa, Peter Gabriel, Shakti, solo, etc.

Ray Shulman: Gentle Giant

Graham Smith: Van Der Graaf, String Driven Thing

Robby Steinhardt: Kansas

Dave Swarbrick: solo, Fairport Convention

Boyd Tinsley: Dave Matthews Band

Michel Urbaniak: Solo, Urbanator

Michael White: solo

Darryl Wolf: Curved Air, Wolf, Gong, solo

(and I've scratched my ehad and still can't remember the jazz fusion lady violinist in Vertu???)

Viola:

John Cale: Velvet Underground, solo

Geoffrey Richardson: Caravan

Cello:

Jack Bruce: Cream, solo

Anna Sofi Dahberg: Anekdoten

David Darling: solo

Angela Schmidt: Far Corner

I spoke with Jerry Goldman backstage in Birmingham, touring with Force Majeure in 2004 (btw DVD is now released!!!). I asked him who his favouirte violinist was, he told me frankly: himself!!!!

doesnt take a neurologist to figure out that the best
violinists came from France in the 70's, for evidence
check out

Didier Lockwood with Zao, Clearlight or Gong
Jean-Luc Ponty with Frank Zappa, Mahavishnu
Orchestra and solo
Henry Loustau with Ange
Gerard Hourbette with Art Zoyd
Richard Aubert with Atoll
Laurent Vercambe with Malicorne

just taking a few off the top!

half of the best in the world are from France!

They are all excellent. You picked some real fine ones.I do have a weakness for Jobson.

He is the only one I actually saw live.3 times with Roxy and 1ce with Jethro Tull.

I have loved Kansas from day 1 ,so that also counts for something.

Good choices, intelligently-worded poll.Clap

I'll vote for J.L. Ponty, ex-Zappa alumni, and solo fusion artist extrordinaire, natch, with Edwin Jobsen next, then the guy from PFM.

The Kansas guy can clean up afterwards....Wink

Jean Luc hands downs. Are you kidding?! The guy's been playing the v since he was like 5 for crying out loud. Not to mention the work he's done with Stephan Grapelli(did I spell that right?). BTW, where is he here?! I know the man is mostly categorized in the fusion realm, but his work is so symphonic he has to be included here. If you're gonna put Brand X, Maha and Return To Forever here, you better include him too.

Sorry. But that's not Jerry Goodman on that album. I forget the name of the guy, but I saw Jeff on this tour with Jan (they opened for Jefferson Starship of all things). I think you're confusing this album with an album Jan and Jerry did right after they left Maha called "Like Children". Both played all the instruments.

I'm sorry, but Charles O'Connor of Horslips is in a completely different league to any of those mentioned so far (including Nigel Kennedy who is the most overrated violinist I've ever heard).

Pagani is the best of those on the poll; Ponty is also very good.

Jean forgot to mention Didier Lockwood and the late Jorge Pinchevski. In fusion also Zbigniew Seifert.

Just to mention a little anecdote: Stephane Grapelli, the famous jazz violinist, who used to play with Django Reinhardt, gave his violin to Jean-Luc Ponty as a token of appreciation for him. Ponty himself passed it on to Dider Lockwood a few years later as a token of appreciation for him. Let's see where Lockwood will pass it when he thinks he has a suitable candidate.
