One of the founding RIO bands and one of the most popular and controversial modern "prog" bands to exist. Both are very unique and have influenced many artists. Which one is your favorite and why?
Please: If you are not familiar with one or both of the band's material, I urge that you use the links provided and at least listen to the samples on their respective pages.
SMM's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=621 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=621 Radiohead's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1492 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1492 As always, discussions are encouraged.
Recap: Round 1 A1: Mahavishnu Orchestra v. Marillion (24-28) A2: Gong v. Area (18-19) A3: Emerson, Lake and Palmer v. The Flower Kings (22-14) A4: The Residents v. Tangerine Dream (12-15) A5: Can v. Dream Theater (42-37) A6: Echolyn v. Opeth (11-18) A7: Van der Graaf Generator v. The Mars Volta (54-18)

4-0 right now in favour of Radiohead -- that has changed with my vote. Samla Mammas Manna very, very easily for me. It's way more fun.

This is purely unfair. Samla who are a decent band who make amusing music sometimes (but not as well as their RIO contemporaries) versus the greatest band of all time (lol, fanboy).
I didn't even need to post and you'd all know for whom and why I voted if you've been on PA before

the sample though... nice... but not exactly inviting for those not predisposed to dispensing melody and traditional things that make music a pleasure to listen to

Samla Mammas Manna by far for me, i can't stand Radiohead. SMM albums are far more chalenging prog than any Radiohead albums, and is more intristing and fun to listen than Radiohead.

Samla is fun, but Radiohead too can be fun in subtle ways ("Idioteque," for example), and I find their music more powerful, emotional, evocative in general, etc.

Micky: I'm glad you liked it, I thought it would appeal to you. Maltid is actually not much of a RIO-esque album, aside from the fact that the release predates the official start of the RIO movement by five years. And I think it would be accessible to most classic prog rockers -- it's zany (hardly altogether zany), but it does have musical chops. I like the folk elements (I have read it amusingly described as "Polka in Opposition"). I think of it a bit as Zappa meets Canterbury meets symph bands..., and even hear a bit of Allman Brothers there.

Enjoying both and having seen both of them live, Samla Mammas Manna by far.
SMM are kind of a unique band and I really haven't heard their sound somewhere else in music.
Radiohead (though I'm aware and I admit that they are pioneers and excellent in what they do) are not as exciting and groundbreaking for me (though still pretty good with in the mood).

I totally agree with you. Maltid has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I myself often refered to it as being polka in opposition. I told that to Lars Hollmer when I've talked to him last year and he thought it was funny and true.
BTW, here's a thought for Lars who's been sick in bed for a while now. ![Hug](smileys/smiley31.gif)

Samla is great, more than a "funny band" (as some "prog listeners" said before) they're a very smart RIO band featuring some of the most complex arrangements ever heard, at the level of Frank Zappa IMO

Radiohead. SMM may be good musicians using the major part of their talents for the making of would-be background music for Comedy Capers-movies, by occasion in a 5/4 or 5/8 time signature. Maybe I'm a bit too narrow-minded to capture the essence of RIO and should I take some time to read the reviews of their albums since some of them score a 4+ average instead of the three that I should give them, based on these samples. Correct me of I'm wrong...

You're wrong. Neither you or Micky (which he later found out) should judge a band like Samla based on a couple of random samples. Only Progmetal and Neoprogbands can be dismissed as simple as that.
Three of these battles has been frustratingly difficult too choose: A8 Samla v. Radiohead Love both. Voted Radiohead as they've meant a lot to me ever since Kid A. A4: The Residents v. Tangerine Dream (12-15) Love both. Voted Residents. Probably the first (experimental) progressive music I got into A2: Gong v. Area (18-19) Love both. Voted Area, not sure why.

I don't really mind who wins, here. I do know that I listen to Radiohead more, for singalong purposes, so I voted the same way, but Samla is one of those bands you know more people would like if they really stopped to listen - along with Stormy Six I think they're the easiest RIO group to appreciate and some of their music really is classic.

Samla and Radiohead are pretty much oposites.
Samla is very direct, what you hear is what you get, it´s fun but there is no depth to it. Radiohead on the contrary is all about layers and new depth and is not usually direct... nor fun![LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif)

I don't agree Febus:
The problem is that many, not all members (including myself) believe that Radiohead is not a Prog band, and shouldn't be in Prog Archives and of course won't vote for them, there are others that believeRadiophead are Prog, while Samlas Mammas Manna is an icon of early Prog in Scandinavia.
In my case I can't stand whining voives as Thom Yorke's, seems to me that all this alternative bands (Don't say they are not alternative ![LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) ) search for a singer trying to sound as depressive as Kurt Cobain.
In order to be compared with Brazil, Radiohead would need a N° 1 album in our charts, well they don't even have an album in the top 100.
The highest rating of a SMM is 4.43 and three more albums over 4.18, compared with Radiohead who have one single album with 4.00 and the rest between 3.89 and 2.28
So it is not like Sweden vs Brazil, because Radiohead is not remotely like Brazil in football, if you want to compare a band with Brazil, maybe Genesis or Yes, this are almighty bands in Prog Archives
And a band who has 4 out of their 6 albums with an average over 4.00 plus one with 3.96, is top notch.

I understand your point, Ivan but what i meant is lately we have quite a young and younger (than us) crowd here on PA who grow up with Radiohead playing in the background or on the radio...They are familiar with the name RADIOHEAD (it's all over the place) and have never heard of SAMMa, an obscure 70s band out of Sweden......and to see them almost neck to neck , i found that stunning!

I was just listening to 'Kid A' and thinking about the courage they needed to release the album, just like in the past Samla did with Maltid. I wrote a small review of 'Kid A' saying exactly how this album carried Radiohead to a level of experimentations I found in RIO bands. Maltid is top ten of my favourite albums ever... so Samla is my favourite, allthough each day I like Radiohead more...
