Aside from prog, what genre would you say you have an encyclopedic
knowledge of? Feel free to spout off a few fave bands as well to show
off the chops. As much as I'm huge into prog right now, I know a hell of alot more about metal. I grew up on the stuff so I'm fairly knowledgable. Top 5 of the moment: Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God Opeth - Still Life (Vastly overrated band that released a few good albums before Blackwater Park) Amorphis - Tales of a Thousand Lakes |

Punk....  I was obsessed with the genre a couple years ago, and used to own ALOT of punk cds, before they were all stolen.  I consider that a clean start for me, as i have gotten into much more meaningful and talented music.I like to delve into alot of genres, namely hardcore, indie, hip hop, metal and electronic... I'd say im at a respectable level of knowledge in each. I dont like to limit myself, i respect all forms of music... except country. Theres a few exceptions, but for the most part, its an awful, awful genre of music. Talk about tone-deaf... -------------

Metal - especially NWOBHM and Classical (I read for a degree, which means I've read a lot more than most people who haven't!). Apart from that, I don't really know - I just know what I like... |

I know pretty much about metal. I was a real metalhead a few years ago. My favourite subgenre was also NWOBHM. Saxon, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Raven and Diamond Head... At the time I was ready to explore the more obscure bands, like Tygers From Pan Tang, Angel Witch, Girlschool and the like, my attention was drawn to a genre called PROGRESSIVE ROCK (ever heard about that?), so I left the world of metal. |

Not enough, that's for damn sure... Metal was my first musical obsession... it started with the mainstream acts, but then I got into Iron Maiden and very soon, I progressed into the more obscure stuff. For a while, I was on a very big thrash kick... if it thrashed, I listened to it (still do actually). Lately, it's more of the obscure 70s hard rock/metal bands I listened to... Oh, and of course, New Wave of British Heavy Metal as well... Then I got into classic rock when I discovered that there was a station on the radio that DIDN'T suck... this got me into the more popular bands, but I also was very interested in stuff like The Velvet Underground and, especially, Blue Oyster Cult (probably my alltime favorite band). There would be quick phases where I would attempt to own all of the albums by an artist (David Bowie, etc. etc.). That's really why I know so much... I was never one for greatest hits compilations. Unless they contain a bunch of bonus tracks you won't hear anything else, they're pointless. Also, it usually works out that the best songs on an album are the obscure tracks that the band never plays in concert. Most recently, I got into extreme metal bands from Europe like Opeth and Edge of Sanity... they introduced me to even more extreme metal and, more importantly, progressive rock. Progressive rock is my new lifetime obsession, and perhaps my most fruitful. I can listen to everything from King Crimson, to Rush, to Can, to the Mars Volta. I've always been a fan of abstraction and unconventional approaches to, well anything really, so this genre has been a godsend. |

Blues Rock, ie; Stevie Ray Vaughan, Arc Angels, Joe Bonamassa, Indigenous, Johnny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Doyle Bramhall II, Chris Duarte, Tab Benoit, Big Head Todd (not all blues), Steve "Mouse" Johnson, Gravy, Popa Chubby... I was totally into Jazz for a few years... but found myself getting the most out of Fusion and experimental stuff. I love instrumental music of various genre's... keep the singers and let the music do the talking. Percussive based music, world, ethno, electronic... I've love intricate rhythms and Eastern motifs. Tabla, marimba, udu drums... Late 80's through mid 90's alternative. I still have a lot of that music. I still listen to it once in a while. |

I have a knowledge of most genres but my main areas of knowledge are based in rock, prog and metal; I am a huge afficionado of NWOBHM bands like Iron Maiden, Angel Witch, Diamond Head and Saxon, plus I love 'trad' metal bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Motorhead. I love 70s rock groups like Uriah Heep, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Free, Van Halen etc. plus some of the AOR bands such as Styx, Magnum, Journey and Kansas. I have attempted to hear every major and many minor rock bands of these eras and love what I hear. |

I wouldn't say encyclopaedic by any means, but styles I have a particular interest in are the more adventurous of metal bands (Arcturus, Maudlin of the Well and similar - or more often that not not similar at all!), technical metal (not neoclassical shred! The crazy, twisted stuff with that's pretentious enough to claim it sounds like jazz the neo folk scene in Europe (Tenhi and similar), and doom metal, particularly funeral doom. Styles I wish I knew more about are "proper" jazz and experimental techno in the vein of Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares et al. |

Compared to a lot of people here, I'm no encyclopedia. But people around me think I'm "The walking encyclopedia of music". I know about swing, prog, and "classic" rock. I also know a little bit about metal. I like to learn about all styles of music. I'm talkin' music, not Rap nor Emo.
