Of the recent (i.e., 1990 to present) progressive bands/albums what are your favorites?  It's sometimes hard to satisfy when the bar was set so high...  and where are the adventurous guitarists???

Here are my entries that ease the craving:

            Spock's Beard - Snow
Mostly Autumn - Last Bright Light (and most of their others as well)
            Steve Hackett - Darktown
            Transatlantic - SMPTe
RPWL - I just got World Through My Eyes and it's fun if not challenging
            IQ - Subterranea
Porcupine Tree (if I'm in the appropriate icky mood)

My general indifference to the blandess of neo-prog is perhaps not best suited for this thread.  What I've heard from Spock's Beard, considered in some circles to the premiere act of this genre, is derivative and too pop-based.  Some merits, but not enough to warrant repeated listenings.

Prog-metal is even more difficult, since many of the bands are almost aggressively anti-prog in nature.  Dream Theater is one of the better bands, but their rabid fanbase turns me off to any public praise.  Symphony X is slighlty better, although they're also a bit repetative.

The top three, in my mind, are The Mars Volta, Pain of Salvation, and Porcupine Tree.  All three of them have illustrated, at least some point in their careers, that they are capable of creating something unique and memorable.

Not albums but groups I like are:

Spocks Beard, Dream Theater,Galleon, Magellan, Salem Hill, The Flower kings, Transatlantic...well the list could go on some way really. I don't care that some of it may be derivative. If I like it I like it. And thats that.

Porcupine Tree are awesome;the last five albums have been of the highest order, though I particularly recommend Signify to Yes fans.
Arena are superb too and I love The Visitor, though not in the same league as Yes in the musician stakes, they create good, wholesome, enjoyable Prog with a story.
