Back during the height of their careers, which musicians would have formed an interesting supergroup for you/ would have made a successful lineup?

Hammill. Cross. Giles. Schetagne/Muir. Haskell.
I'd have loved it.

I suppose this thread falls under be careful what you wish for.
Wetton/Howe/Palmer/Downes. Actually, one of my favorite bands, but not much love for them here on PA. And although I like their output, just imagine what Asia might have sounded like as a prog band with this cast of characters.

Hint, for this to become an interesting discussion, please comment on your suggestions. For example, why do you think those people would have worked well together?

I don't think this would be a successful super-duper group, but the results might have been interesting (one wouldn't want oo many egos and visions at play):
Vander Wyatt Cobham McLaughlin Pastorius Paganotti Dagmar Krause Stella Vander Frith Cutler Fripp Greaves Schulze Suzuki Hammill Moerlen Meyer Basquiz Didier Lockwood Tatsuya Yoshida Nami Sagara Seefer Yochk'o Zorn Driver Wakhevitch David Surkamp Grigsby Hastings van Leer van Vliet Caroline Prieto and James LaBrie conducting the whole thing.

This gets my nomination for best "dream band" I've ever seen. Haha, this would be incredibly bizarre and epic, and it wouldn't work in a million years.
Great thought into it though! Labrie and Beefheart in the same band... WOAH.

I wish those XYZ (Ex-Yes-Zeppelin) rumours would have come to fruition.
I think it was going to be:

Plant
Squire
White

Thanks, but somehow I forgot Zappa and Akerfeldt with the Spice Girls as back-up singers. ;)
To answer this more seriously... Erm, I'm drawing a blank:
Billy Cobham
Didier Lockwood Jannick Top Frank Zappa

Prog Band - The United States of America
Tom Scholz (Boston) - Guitars/Keyboards
Peter Cetera (Chicago) - Bass/Vocals
Robby Steinhart (Kansas) - Violin
Bernie Marsden (Alaska) - Guitars
Paul Richards (California Guitar Trio) - Guitar Hal Blaine (America) - Drums
This would probably be more of a really good AOR band than a prog band, but since I like all of these bands, my little harebrained scheme of taking members of bands with US location names might produce some decent music.

Cool idea. Personally I'd want to throw in a member of ../artist.asp?id=2676 - OREGON , which is a very good jazz-rock band in the archives -- maybe have Collin Walcott on tabla, sitar and dulcimer. Bt maybe they wouldn't gel that well as an AOJR band.

Oh my god, can I join this band??!! Please?? I shall rattle a (frankly unnecessary) tambourine and sing back-up vocals with aplomb. If not that, I could be Assistant Roadie In Charge Of Small Items. Plastic bag containing Beefheart's lyric collection, Blasquiz's claves and selection of combs (for the Ultimate Beard), you name it!

Not sure whether all the personalities would fit in the room, but let's assume it's a very large room...
Zappa (on guitar and conceptual continuity) Rundgren (on vocals and high emotion - and on pyramid - and in lycra) Vander (on percussion, and on fire)
They would make a concept album about a cosmically enlightened ancient egyptian interstellar poodle who knows the true meaning of the verb: to love.

Absolutely! Things didn't work out well with LaBrie, truth be told he was being too much of a diva, so we were forced to cut TheCheese, and have been looking for a replacement.

Steve Morse-Guitars

Jordan Rudess-Keyboards
Rod Morgenstein-Drums
Jerry Goodman- Violin
John Bolton-Sax and Flute
Warren Ham-Vocals, Sax and Flute
They could call it the Proto Dregs from Kansas.

Haha, well, the emotional strain of conducting all of that might be too much to bear! I'd have to clone myself to cope with all the multiple time signatures...

Logan's supergroup is unbeatable , but let's see...
Christian Vander drums Christian Squire bass (The best rythm section for a Christian band.) Thijs Van Leer keys+flute+vocal Omar Rodriguez guitar Daniel Gildenlöw vocals.
I don't know how would they sound Daniel and Thijs singing in Kobaia could be pretty cool.

I took a more modern take on the question, with both new and old musicians.
Some of my favourite musicians, who I think would go well together:
Daniel O'Sullivan - Fender Rhodes, harmonium (my favourite composer/musician right now - Guapo, Mothlite, Miasma & the Carousel of Headless Horses. Need I mention more?)
Bo Hansson - mellotron, harmonium, keyboards (love his playing, both a bit ambient and quite melodic too)
Daniel Denis - drums (by far one of the most interesting drummers)
Toby Driver - guitar, vocals, clarinet (great composer and musician. Love his vocals too, actually - guess it's a love or hate kind of thing)
Michel Berckmans - bassoon (I don't know too many bassoonist, but I love the sound of the instrument)
Nils Petter Molvær - trumpet, electronics (a norwegian experimental trumpetist - check out his record Khmer)
Andy Rourke - bass (the bass player from the Smiths. I find him really interesting)
I would presume the music to be quite dark and eerie avant-garde/post-rock, but at the same time very relaxing, and with some heavy outbursts now and then.

In the past Mike Portnoy's talked about working with Steven Wilson and Mikael Akerfeld. So I would have to say there's actually a shot at this happening:
Mike Portnoy - Drums
Steven Wilson - Guitar, Vocals
Mikael Akerfeld - Guitar, Vocals
Dan Briggs - Bass
Kevin Moore - Keys
Something that could actually happen?
