What's the average rating for an album on the site? Is the data for this available?

I think he's wondering what rating the average PA album has. (Or what the average rating of an album on PA is)

^Exactly. If we took every album and averaged their ratings together, what would we have.

There are two averages inthis case:

  1. The average rating: 3 stars, we have five ooptions, so the third one is the average.
  2. The average number of stars given to an album: In this case we take all the ratings, add the number of stars given  and divide them among the number of ratings, probably is 4 stars or maybe a little higher, being that people tends to rate more the albums they like.

^ that would be the arithmetical mean ... but M@x also implemented weights for the user status (user/collab) and on top of that there's also the weighted average algorithm

I remember from previous threads that the average was somewhere in the 3.5 area ...

Well Ivan I would hope that I could figure 1. out by myself.

Specifically I was wondering about the average without the weightings.

actually 3/5 is the *typical* rating ... the mathematical average would be 2.5.Wink

Actually it's 3...the range is between 1 and 5.  Think of the average between numbers uniformly distributed between 0 and 4, and then add 1.

Or look up the definition of the mean of a uniform distribution.  Wink

^ can't argue with that, mathematically. But I still think of a rating scale from 0 to 5, it's just the the 0 was "outlawed".LOL

Odd - does it matter what we call the lowest possible rating?

Eek! Shocked

That's not something you can glean from the site without a lot of hard graft (manually adding up all the individual ratings for each album).

From what I can gather the site actually uses two weighted algorithms:

1) The user/collab weighting algorithm is used to display the average rating for each album based upon weightings for ratings without review, user ratings with review and collab ratings with review. This is the value shown on the album page and in the top-100 charts.

2) The weighted-average algorithm is used to calculate chart position and employs user/collab weighting and weightings for site-average rating per album and site-average-number of ratings per album.

In theory it should be possible to back-calculate the site-average from the weighted-average algorithm, but the result of the algorithm is not displayed as a value.

What?

^ I figured that would be the case. Thought I'd take a shot though. The numerical rating of an album is rather worthless without it I think.

Not necesarilly, because some people consider 3 stars a bad rating bellow the average despite the numbers..

I probably missed some albums, but this is pretty much it.

have to ask mailto:M@X - M@X for more precise nrs.

I would like to calculate the average's by subgenre aswell, but I don't feel like it.

was fun to do btw.

edit: I missed the various artist albums, so that's 275 albums I didn't use, only makes up for some 2% so shouldn't skew the averages too much.

Your welcome.

For those curious. these are the average ratings by subgenre (again, aprox).

the weighted average is taken into account the nr of ratings for an album, the normal average is counting every album as 1. of course the weighted average is more accurate, but as I can't compensate for the logarythm used to calculate the averages on this site it's still not perfect.

nr albums with ratings average rating nr. ratings weight adjusted

Naturally the weighted average is higher, as the more popular and higher regarded albums are far more often rated, so they weigh heavy on the average.
