Subject: The website is slow, sometimes doesn't work at all

I'm not talking about loading times for pages as we have 023972 signatures and sh*t that takes a lot of time... I'm talking when you press the link for, say, an specific thread, it takes SO long sometimes to get there, and sometimes, like yesterday a few times, it didn't get there at all and I had one of two possible messages, either "server forum error" or something like that or the IE-generated "Internet Explorer can't open this page" or something. Now, it's not my computer (I have two) nor my conecction (every other website works perfectly... even Mike's slow-as-hell ratingfreak!!).....
And the worst thing is the recurrent problem with replies lost. It has gotten to a point where, whenever I write a reply or a new topic, I actually copy all the text just in case I get the glorious "forum error" message and lose everything, like has happened coutless times to me in the last month.
So please whoever has to do something.. maybe the band requires more bandwidth (I don't know nothing about that) or a new server or a deal with Dream Theater.net or something, but please...for the first time ever, PA is becoming a nuisance... and not because of the posts therein!!!

Just to chime in with additional data - I am also experiencing server errors and "eaten" posts at an increasing rate, and experiencing the link lag times that Teo is talking about as well.

Server Error in Forum Application An error has occurred while writing to the database. Please contact the forum administrator.

^That happens to me at least 5 times a day when using PA. Sometimes I get that error up to 30 times a day.
And like The T, I usually hit control+C on my text before I post in case I lose it. It's been incredibly frustrating when I've made well thought out posts that took me fair amounts of time to do, only for it to be eaten by the dreaded white screen error.

Any sort of pattern? Are some times of the day better than others? I get the time out very occasionally, but certainly not daily. I wonder if there is a peak time?
Please also mention the operating system/browser being used, in case there is a problem with one particular type.

Bob, to be honest I don't notice any one time of day being any worse than another. I feel like only a month ago I would only rarely get the server forum error Teo describes, now like Harry said I probably get about 5 a day.
Linux/Firefox, for what it's worth.

I've used 4 different browsers in the last few weeks, the browser being used is meaningless. You get the errors regardless of whether you use Opera, Firefox, IE etc. I recently upgraded from Firefox 2 to version 3. Still get the errors. Time of day, no correlation for me. And for those that might bring up the sigs correlation, it's pretty much been established you can get the error and/or slow loading times going to a page with barely any sigs, or a page full of sigs. I could quite easily have a page full of signatures load up in about 1/4 of a second, but try to go into a new topic which hasn't been posted in yet other than the starter post, and it could take 5 minutes.

Ironically, I can't quoteBob's post, I've tried multiple times to post this already, and it sure as hell takes a long time to get nowhere. I either get a blank page, the error that T posted above, or literally I will just sit at the page with the link.
Add my name to the list. This has been happening more and more to me as of late. Also the prog recs section is easily the worst for me. It takes a very long time to open it.
I'm on IE (6 I think).

maybe we can eliminate some of the off-topic areas .... a lot of dead weight that probably slows the server down. Hopefully we won't see any of the spammers here complaining about speed when threads about nothing eat more server space in a day than all the prog discussion combined hahahha.

I've actually lost posts when they've failed to load. And anyone who actually bothers to read my drivel knows what a tragedy that is.
Good idea to copy anything you've spent a little time composing to the clip board just to be safe.
Although, have you considered the possibility that web site has normal speed and you are way too fast and hold down a job?

What the others have reported so far has happened to me too, both with Explorer and Firefox - with the exception of the loss of posts, since I have found out that hitting the Refresh button, then clicking OK on the window that will appear after that, will result in my post appearing correctly in the forums. However, I got the 'dreaded' error message on white screen at least twice this morning, and multiple times over the past few weeks.

It did seem to me when I had a fairly large (byte-wise) picture file in my signature PA ran slower in the threads I post to. When I removed it things went somewhat quicker.
Is it possible there could be something in the number of large signature pix on a page?

Teo, I could have written yours almost word for word. No correlations with time of day or anything. Happens at home and work, on two different browsers, running Windows XP on both. I click on "forum home" to get an overview of everything....and then I sit....and wait....and wait....
Just an FYI. Happy weekend all!!

When people start to read the whole thread before they post, we might actually get somewhere. How many times do I or something else need to explain signatures have no correlation with the errors and the slow loading times that are plaguing us?

It's not signatures... it's not anything related to content. is the website. It's slow. Sometimes takes 03891 minutes to load, sometimes posts are lost, sometimes it just loads halfway yes, that's an error I forgot to mention, though less recurrent. The banner above loads, but everything below is blank... and it says "done, but with errors on page" in the bottom of the browser...
-------------
|
Posted By: Petrovsk Mizinski
Date Posted: June 21 2008 at 21:13
"03891 minutes" you have no idea how funny that is when you've been doing an all nighter on the computer like I have. Yeah. the "done, but with errors on page", when I was still using IE 7 a few weeks ago, I got that ALL THE TIME, like literally every page had that on the status bar at the bottom. I no longer get that problem with Firefox 3 though, so that issue is in fact partly browser related most likely.

It will happen to you so many times in the course of the next week that it will drive yourself mad, you'll destroy your computer and the whole world will crumble and start to fall apart, throwing you on a path towards sure extinction, which...
Maybe it will not be THAT bad. But it will happen to you. And a lot.

I have to agree with the T, what is going on lately? I feel like even not visiting ( a relief for some ) because of the failure rate when clicking on links and threads. The main page is far more reliable than the forum but this must be a server issue as normally amount of registered users is about 20-30 maximum. Or is the software slowing down because of hacking attempts? Very frustrating...
