My peavey valveking is broken and I need a new amplifier. Can anyone suggest an affordable but great sounding amplifier that they've used/have/played through/heard of?

Thanks in advance, as always Big%20smile

You have a Valve King? Damn, not a bad amp dude.
If you have any full frequency sound devices, get an amp modelling unit. You didn't really give us any price range, but as far as I'm aware, the Line 6 POD X3 Live and Boss GT-10 might still be a bit expensive, given one of those units individually costs at least 3/4 as much as a new Valve King head.
You should be able to find the POD XT Live/Boss GT-8 for discounted prices now they have been superseded.

Agreed ... the new generation of modelling amps is excellent, and the former one too (POD XT). In fact only last week I read an interview of Arjen Lucassen, and he said that he used a combination of POD 2.0 and POD XT on 01011001!

^The PODs can sound very amazing when recorded direct.
I've been recording using my Behringer V-Amp 2 and to my ears it has a more spongy feel than the POD 2.0 and just in general a more tube amp like feel. The POD XT still beats my V-Amp, but considering the V-Amp 2 goes for half the price of a POD 2.0 (or in my case since I got a discount, less than half the price), the V-Amp 2 is a great deal indeed.
Also of note, is that I have used a Roland Cube 30 to direct record, and it sounded good. Once you double track the rhythm guitar parts (if you were doing metal like I was anyway) with the Cube, the results can sound actually really great and with a high recording sampling rate/bit rate, you can get it to sound pretty professional actuallySmile

^ of course double tracking is the only way to get a really fat rhythm guitar sound on the record ... and it's a good excercise to improve rhythmic accuracy.
