Yes. It is the time.
Here's the refresher for all of you new to the list making. You all (and he means everyone) get to vote for all of your favorite songs by ranking them in order (DO NOT FREAK OUT, the actual order is minimally important in comparison to the fact that that particular song is on the list) on lists of length between 100 songs minimum and I'll take up to 500 songs maximum. The songs can be any song, I repeat, any song that has been released by an artist. The list is not restricted to prog only. I think we'd all like to see how diverse our tastes are so keep true to your musical favorites. For those of you out there who are thinking, "I can't possibly rank that many songs" you can. Now, composing a list of this magnitude may take a long period of time for all of us, so the due date as of now when voting will close is.... August 10th 2008.
Ok everyone. I'm looking for a better participation than my other lists, let's get too it. I know there are plenty of you who are just as excited as I am for this endeavor and we can do it together!
More rules:
Edits - Please inform me either on the thread or through PM of your edits to your list, which you can make at any time up to the due date. However, since these are huge lists we're dealing with, please keep edits to single replacement. For example, you forgot song A and you think it should be on your chart. Then you can ask to replace song A with song B and you can replace song B with a lower song and so on.
Snippits - I love these. Add them if you wish. They make the final presentation far nicer. Just add a few words about a song you like as to why you like it.
Order - I probably won't know every single song that is voted for so please keep your lists to this format:
Number Artist Song Title
Remember, this is a lot of work so don't put it off. I will be bumping this thread a lot to ensure it gets the attention it deserves. Are you ready? Am I ready?
Get to it!Thumbs%20Up

OK - sounds like fun, but I gotta know how you are defining song.  I mean is Tull's A Passion Play a song?  Is Supper's Ready a song?    How about Yes' Five Per Cent for Nothing?

Or in other words, does there have to be singing and does length or shortness count?

It wouldn't be a huge amount of work for me as I have my whole collection in a spreadsheet.  Not ranked though.

1. National Health - Phlakaton
(the joke resurfaces)

I'll give you a list of five hundred and it's almost certain that the top hundred will all have one of eight different female singers singing them. back later to RIO the thread up

There does not have to be singing. It can be as long or as short as it can be. As far as those multi track songs go, you might as well make them one single entry rather than part 1/part 2. Exceptions can come up on a case by case basis, but songs like Thick as a Brick, A Passion Play, Karn Evil 9, etc. count as one song, but something like the suite on Abbey Road count as different song because they are different songs put together. Makes sense?

My guess is the main problem was with peoples album selections...

But if you have the results tabulated it'd be cool to see. If you actually have to do work for it then ehh. Tongue

^There were some really strange ideas on symphonic some people posted their.

Will get to it, it shouldnt be too hard to pick out a list of really good songs but giving them even a vague order could be difficult. I like a challenge.

Yeah, I don't want to totally kill myself here. Let's face it, there are going to me more songs than albums and this list will be much harder to manage. I'm sure you can forgive me for this rule.
Actually, if you just add a chunk in the middle and don't change the rest that won't be too bad.

Micky, brings up a fair compromise that I'll make. You guys can tell me when your list is finalized. Because honestly, I really don't want to be fiddling around in the database. Oh and if you edit, make sure you include things like old position in parentheses. That would be really helpful.

Instead of listing all the individual songs of MDK, I'll just list the live version of the whole album. You dig, Itsy? Live tracks count?

Posted By: moreitsythanyou
Date Posted: June 09 2008 at 21:05
I guess, but I think the individual tracks are gonna get more votes each. So I'd say individual tracks would be the way to go, but do as you'd like.
However, you can't put the live and studio version of a song on your list. A vote for the live version is a vote for the studio version. I won't make a distinction to keep it simple.

Dude. Fun. The inherently human thing of always listing things. Seeing which song most people like. Getting mister moreitsy to keep his hands off himself for a summer. Geeting people to say "ooh, is that your number one song, that's so cuuute!!".

But mostly just for fun.

Suites that are clearly all part of the same song (as I said before examples would be Thick as a Brick, A Passion Play, Karn Evil 9) are one song but suites that are a compilation of songs (A Suite for the Everyman, Golden Slumbers, MDK) should be separate.

Suites that are clearly all part of the same song (as I said before examples would be Thick as a Brick, A Passion Play, Karn Evil 9) are one song but suites that are a compilation of songs (A Suite for the Everyman, Golden Slumbers, MDK) should be separate.

OK, thanks!

Nevermind, I really dont want to write such a big list, because I know I'll forget some, and even though the place probably wont count, I know I wil look back on my placement and say "what was I thinking".

Rach's 2nd has a real personal story to it. Enough to touch my soul very deeply upon every listen.  His 'Rhapsody of a theme of Paganini' will be appearing in my second 100.. and might even slip into the first batch. An AMAZING piece of music.  Have you heard Grieg's piano concerto by chance

oh an btw... you weren't kidding about the elitist limited listener you are hahahha WinkHeart

My issue with classical things is that I find numbers nondescript, so I tend to end up actually forgetting which ones I really liked. Also, I suppose that, with dashes of Holst, Bach, Mussourgsky and Tchaikovsky excepted, I haven't actually been listening to my classical stuff for a while. Hm. I remember rather liking Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini, but I can't quite pinpoint what it is. Haven't heard Grieg's yet, Philistine that I am.

It's not so much elitist, it's just that I only really got into music with my discovery of prog rock, and since that the world of prog has become a sponge for my music funds. This, of course, means that the straighter rock, classical, world, whatever stuff gets left behind. I'm sure I'd love lots of it, but currently I'm 'busy' with prog, and I'm loving most of that. I suppose the other thing is that atmosphere tends to floor me, and I more rarely get that from other genres.

Limited, I totally agree with. I suppose the reverse on that is that BSS has more variety than 99% of groups/artists will have in their entire state of existence. I believe that it requires an essentially broader taste to appreciate that album :p than to go for, say, AC/DC and Tchaikovsky. Prog's more of a moniker than a genre, really.

98: Wha-ha-ha - Tactics
99: Wha-ha-ha - My Happiness (is Not Yours)
...
100: Super Furry Animals - Calimero

DONE!
the story behind this is that I originally wrote out this super avant list full of UZ and Zao and it was just a big f**king lie, for many reasons (not just that it didn't reference SFA 30 times). This is a list of songs I can sing along to, that have changed my life and that have made me cry. no Belgians sitting in a circle with cellos can actually have the same effect on me as anything on this list.

I just had to admit being a pop dork at times. SONGS ARE IMPORTANT. =)

very wise indeed... as I told Raff when she was commenting on my list to me....  prog is more about the album as a whole...  for me at least it is hard to seperate songs from the albums... of course some stand out... but as a whole.. if I think songs... I'm not usually thinking prog songs.. because very often it is the context of the album as a whole that gives them their richness.  As many people who have any experience with making music will tell you.. it is DAMN hard to make a good song.

Every year on Memorial weekend the local classic rock station plays the top 500 classic rock songs as voted on by listeners (supposedly anyways).  There are 22 songs by Led Zeppelin, 20 songs by the Rollings Stones, 18 songs by the Beatles, 17 songs from Bob Seger (he is from Michigan after all), 15 songs from the Eagles, and 14 songs from Aerosmith.

Bands on this site (other than Led Zep and the Beatles) include 2 from Black Sabbath, 3 from Deep Purple, 10 from the Doors, 4 from ELO, 2 from ELP, 3 from Jethro Tull, 7 from Journey (I don't think they have been added yet, but that is the word), 3 from Kansas, 1 from the Moody Blues, 13 from Pink Floyd, 8 from Queen, 4 from Rush, 6 from Styx (it rhymes), 5 from Supertramp, 1 from Traffic, 11 from the Who, and 3 from Yes.

That totals 124 songs from bands on this site.  Granted, most are in proto prog or prog related and the songs are more than likely the ones that are too commercial for the consumption of this sites forum members but what the heck I thought that I would do this post anyhow, since it is semi-related to this thread although it does nothing to expand upon the goal of this thread.

Edit: Overlooked 3 from Santana and 2 from Blue Oyster Cult.

Oh yeah, and 2 from Pat Benatar (isn't that right Micky?)

Nothing from Genesis made the list, but In The Air Tonight from Phil Collins is there.

Well well, you and your wide knowledge of Italy and not from your sons country!? That's a shame!

Pescado Rabioso is blues/hard rock band from Argentina lead by God Luis Alberto Spinetta, I suppose you know him, at least. Don't you? He's from Invisible a "very" famous prog band from here.

For the report card, I'm happy with it, are you?
From 12 subjects I only have 2 below the average mark, these are Social Cience(History and Geography, in spanish) and Natural Cience(Biology and a sort of Chemistry, in spanish as well).

...Ahh the #17! Bloody Well Right, that was my first love with Supertramp, when my brother brought me on December, I think, the Best of them from a friend, and well, he loved Rudy and I loved Bloody Well Right, the intro is lovely. Though the live version, IMO, is weak, the vocals are bad and the intro is too fast, with no emotion.

..Hope you're happy with my Report Card

I'm doing one of these, I'm using notepad to write down all the tracks that i'm certain would make ma top 500 list, and when i write down new tracks, i try to place them in between one track that i like better, and one track that i like less, all the time. this is a great way to make a list, as you dont have to switch around all the songs all the time.

im gonna go all out and make a top 500. its probably gonna take a few weeks or so (im not going to be doing it all teh time, lawl) but im gonna get it done. mark my words...

"Third" is one of my favorite albums of all time, so I just had to include that... probably my favorite song off that album. Absolutely amazing piece. Big%20smile

I kinda put mine together though with not a whole lot of double-checking, however... I didn't want to be spending way too much time deciding on the perfect slots, but I think it turned out pretty well for the purposes of the note.
