Those double bass drums. Drive me crazy.

What is the technical term for 'Ladies and Gents here's Alex Van Halen...'?

It's a massive turn-off:

I was trying to mimic the sound of a double bass-drum in words. In an out-there 4/4.

I can only agree to this. I have heard one single exception so far where double bass-drumming really fitted the music. the rest was just some guy with too much testosterone showing off: I know other people love double bass-drumming, but I think it is highly idiotic, whatever they say

I don't think double is the problem, but rather how it's used. I really think it is terrible abused nowadays, but it can be used properly. Compare something like http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/mikeportnoyjasonbittner.html - this , or http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/mikeportnoybenante.html - this (primitive as-fast-as-possible bass drum style) to something like http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/gavinharrisonplasson.html - this , or http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/bozziowackerman3.html - this .

And this right http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/mikeportnoybassdrum.html - here is the biggest piece of double bass propaganda you'll ever find.

you know my opinion about double bass-drumming, Mike. I won't hide my dislike for it. and I even admitted I found one example where I thought it was adequate. but don't ask me what that example was, I forgot. actually I am not that much interested in that gimmick. and whatever you say, it IS a gimmick

http://youtube.com/watch?v=iQDkhPIYboI - This also often has four bass drums going at once, and both drummers involved are better than Collins and Thompson (as much as I love Chester, he pales in comparison to Zappa's later drummers).
