To be honest I like Dream Theater I like them best when they are being themselves most and playing and writing music through their own interpretations I also prefer it when they are a little less heavy and embrace prog rock and metal with subtlety and actually some warmth in their sound which leads me to this question  would you like Dream Theater more if  they had much fewer  Metallica influences ?
I'm not a Metallica fan in the same way I am a Dream Theater fan so on some level it bugs me that whenever the DT guys seem to having trouble coming up with new ideas its lets just wake up the sandman and take him for a spin.   Confused

I just like them anyways LOL. No vote, I don't really care what they do. Although I was a bit let down by Train of
Though which is the album that people say is hit by Metallica the most. I'm sure many will disagree with my
notion though.

All things considered, the Metallica and Iron Maiden influences will be inevitable. What Dream Theater can do is feed their heavy rock side with other rocking influences: from instance, Gordian Knot, At War with Self - that would be a very important source of influence for future compositions and arrangements.

Also, given Rudess's taste for atmospheric trends of rock such as post-rock and space-rock, they might give him more room to develop these influences into DT future songs. The way that Rudess incorporated the continuum and the pedal steel guitar into the DT arsenal was so awesome that I would really suggest the band (were I their manager) to bring more sounds, melodies and ideas to the band.

      Kind regards.

I'd hardly say they're that Metallica influenced, their metal influence comes from many different places. Hell, Portnoy listens to quite a lot of metal. Hell, Constant Motion reminds me of Anthrax A LOT as just one example.

I feel that their heavy side has been extremely underrated because everyone first says "Train Of Thought" is the one to hear for heaviness. Where it's really just full of horrid chug riffs. It is the heaviest, but it is nowhere near the best example of their metal side. Hell, Glass Prison is 14 minutes of the metal side and it's one of the best things I've ever heard. That song there proves that they can do the heavier stuff as well as anyone. Just because they occasionally go about it the wrong way (quite often in the last few years) doesn't really mean that this particular aspect of their sound is a weakness.

Also, if they weren't Metallica-ing it up, they'ed probably just write heaps more power ballads, which could not be a good thing.

Yeah, the power ballads can be unlistenable.

While I am not enthusiastic about Dream Theater, I think they have some fantastic albums. Since I came to prog from the metal-side, I SHALL like metal influences.. but more Metallica would for my opinion ruin Dream Theater. I have some doubt that they could ever reach the "Train of Thought"-Level with it. More Metallica would also mean less keyboards..
Conclusion: No, not more Metallica-influences. If I want progressive metal with tendencies to thrash metal, I go with Symphony X's "Paradise Lost".

Less? Maybe a bit.. but I won't vote "YES".. they are good the way they are..

My thoughts exactlyClap. Master of Puppets is one of my all-time favourite albums, and Ride the Lighting is not far behind. The only time I sort of like LaBrie's voice is when he sounds like James Hetfield.. Go figure.

Good posts. I would've expected much more cannibalism in this thread. Of course I side with those that said that they like DT just the way they are. But to touch the subject, as "Train of thought" is my least favorite DT album, maybe I prefer them when they are a little bit more Metalicca-free. Metalica was great when it was, well, Metallica. DT has some great songs where they use Metallica influences (the riff in Metropolis), but when they have tried to emulate their sound much closer, thise are some of the very few moments when I don't think they're the greatest ever.

Says the man with himself hanging out with Dream Theater in his sig... Wink

And I agree with all those points. I really have no problems with Train Of Thought as far as influences go, but for
some reason that album just came off as very samey to me. I jus' like a little more variety. Although I haven't
listened to much Metallica, so maybe I just don't know when they are trying to be Metallica.

(awesome picture by the way! So jealous...)

Yes, they like Metallica, and they are an influence. But just because they covered an album of theirs doesn't mean that they are always trying to be Metallica whenever they do heavy stuff. Musically they don't have that many similarities with the band, other than that they're both metal...

My wording was a little poor. Yes, the band is influenced by Metallica, but that's not their only metal influence.

YES. YES REALLY!

i mean, Metallica is a F*CKING great band, but hey let's not get ourselves too cocky.
there are a lot of other influences that they could indeed use in their songs.

OR BETTER, THEY COULD DO A SOUND THAT'S UNIQUE? HOW ABOUT THAT?

you Most be kidding! I know and I am very convinced the metallica were a huge to influence to Dream Theater but the had always  being better than Metallica by miles ways if. they would so much like metallica I wouldn't be such a big as  I am. I  really like one song here and their of  the Metallic boys, but to say they sound just like them and say that Dt are having problem coming out with new ideas is insane. Metallica is still making incredible albums. when in the world METAllica will even made a album as Octavirum and Scenes from a Memory or even Awake? When NEVER!!!Wink

How is Dream Theater better than METALLICA?  in Avery single way. Big%20smile

Yorkie, my friend, some things just don't go away!
I might as well have my say anyway. I'm happy with DT the way they are. Sure, my faves are the more prog tracks, eg, Octavarium. However, I also love the Metallica-ish stuff like The Glass Prison. You have to take your hat off to the DT boys, not only are they exceptional, they probably attract more polls and comments than anybody else!
