I went for Gillan for no other reason than i like the sound of his voice more than the other two.

Uriah Heep, who are often compared to these three bands, had the best vocalist of all of them in David Byron, IMO.

Hard choice between Gillan and Plant (I totally dislike Ozzy's style). In the end, the vote goes to Plant for II, III and IV.

Date Posted: May 17 2008 at 07:56
Gillan all the way, though I like Plant too. However, Ozzy, even if not a 'good' singer in any conventional sense, was perfect for the sound of early Black Sabbath.

BTW, this should be moved, since it's about the singers of three PROG-RELATED bands...

Plant, but Rodgers trounces them all.

One of my fave bands: Deep Purple
Best vocals (on this poll): Ian Gillan
Special fave: Gillan!! although if Coverdale was here it would be very difficult to me.

I do love Sabbath and Zeppelin, but not as Deep Purple. Although I prefer DP for Jon Lord, still the vocals give a good advantage.

DP albums with Gillan I love: Fireball, Machine Head, WDYTWA, TBRO, Purpendicular, Bananas and ROTD. Well of course Made in Japan too.

Paul Rodgers? Fine voice but his singing in Bad Company is slightly weak and not quite unique as his voice in Free. Of course this is IMO.

Although it really depends on the mood I am. Of course depends on the band they're, since I prefer DP above all (hard rock bands) surely Gillan will be. Although if I'm not in mood of rocking, I'll go for some bluesy rockish Zep with I and II that are massive.
Or for more straightforward rock, like tunes like Parnoid, Iron Man, etc I'll take Sabbath.

Although these three bands have their most 'complex' moments. War Pigs, The Writ, etc for Sabbath. No Quarter, Achilles Last Stand, etc for Zep.
Lazy, Fools, Child in Time, etc for DP.

....Hey chopper what's your fave Free album? Mines Heartbreaker.

Then Mr. Gillian.

Ozzy can sit at the bottom and learn from the other two.

Gillan by a short distance over Plant

Ozzy is not really in the same class vocally (although he was a good front man in Sabbath)

I voted for Gillan, because I love his voice.

But Plant and Ozzy (can't call him 'vocalist' though) are more successfull and convincing in their solo careers.

Anyway all three are strong personalities, each in his own way.

Who currently produces most interesting solo works? - I think Plant.

Who of all of them made the greatest solo album? - I think Ozzy, the worst singer. And the album is "Blizzard of Ozz". Clap

Oh well.  Of the three listed, Gillan edges Plant by a hair in my book.  Plus he gets bonus points for having played the lead in Jesus Christ Superstar...

Then I'm voting for Dio. His lyrics might get a bit too cryptic for their own good at times, but at least they're clearly allegorical instead of attempts at impressing the "intellectuals" by making up some vaguely profound-sounding babble.

And, hey, this thread's about vocal performance rather than lyrics - right? Wink

IAN GILLAN Thumbs%20Upfor me still going strong..
Plant]s voice was good at the beginning til' ZEP5 but after his voice went downhill and is almost not recognizable lately

Led Zep & Purple are my fave in the hard-rock genre and both frontmen are extremely good. I've seen Plant only once (early 75) and Gillan a lot of times (from early 73 through 2006). Both were exceptional in theIr heydays, and logically they can't reach their top form any longer (which is nothing but normal BTW).

Choice is very difficult but I voted Plant (and even if Ilike Sabbath, Ozzy can't really compete here).

Plant but Gillan is great too.

Ozzy......as much as I like a lot of the stuff he's done both with Sabbath and solo can't compete as a vocalist with these 2.

Ian Gillan hands down over Ozzy, but barely squeaks ahead of Mr. Plant.
If you want to hear Ians most amazing preformance check out Deep Purple Live In Concert 72/73.
Child In time on the 72 concert is simply mindblowing.

You know I always hear that Plants vocals have been shot since IV. Thats true for their live performances I guess. But I really love his vocals on HOTH and PG.

Maybe studio magic helps.

I can certainly hear a change in his singing on Presence. His vocals do sound a bit strained on that one. But when you sing like Plant does, its kinda expected that your voice is gonna get strained over time. In his prime he was an awesome vocalist. I can appreciate that Gillian is better technically, but Deep Purple kinda bore me.

A little harsh putting Ozzy in there, the other guys have ranges and can sing, Ozzy is really not a talented vocalist, he just kind of wails. Should have at least had Dio competing in his place.

Tee hee, a vote from me and that's Gillan ahead in this poll, where he should be.

I am a huge fan of Black Sabbah and I love Ozzy's solo albums very much too - so Ozzy gets my vote for sure. (But I have to add that Ozzy is a horrible show man and it is extremely annoying that he screams "louder!!", "I can't heeeear you!!" and uses the word "f**k" ten times in each sentence when he introduces the next song. Listen to the studio albums and ignore his live output.)

However, Gillan is clearly a better singer from a technical perspective, and I like Deep Purple and Ian Gillan Band/Gillan very much too. Gillan is the best live singer.

I have never liked Led Zeppelin and I think they are one of the most overrated bands of all time! Ouch Never liked Plants vocals. Sorry all Zeppelin fans, I don't get what all the fuss is about.

LOL you said it newby, maybe you ain't aware of any  solid Ozzy albums that you said is not talented, what about Diary of a madman, Bark at the moon or Ultimate sin to name a few, legendary albums with solid musicianship and great ideas and vocals for heavy metal period. I also like both Gillan and Plant, but Gillan is another kind of vocalist  than Ozzy he is more bluesy to me, like Plant aswell. Strange, because i like Plant's voice i never quite enjoy Led Zeppelin, maybe only album i can listen from head to toe is Physical graffiti. So Ozzy is my vote no doubt one of the most recognizible voices in rock history.

Anyway, from the list I picked up Plant. But for me is esy how to explain why he should be the chosen one: while his band stopped after Bonzo's dead, the others have continued, with and without their most recognizable frontman.

It's a shame the way some people here disrespects Ozzy. Ozzy is more than a singer, he's one of the greatest artist of the XX century. But it seems that they evaluate Ozzy's value by "The Osbournes", what just show their degree of ignorance of rock'n'roll history. Dislikeness is one thing, another is to call a historic figure inside and outside music a moron. Sorry for the hard words.
