For me, this was Zappa's absolute nadir, and I consider the albums fit to be consumed only by completists.  So what's the best of the worst?  My vote would be the Fillmore East album, which is somewhat redeemed by Mud Shark and Bwana Dik, and of course has Don Preston on keyboards which is always a plus.  Chunga runs a close second since it has the first appearance of the incomparable Sharleena.  Others may prefer anything with Billy The Mountain on it.

But looking back, the best thing that happened to FZ during this period was that the irate fan threw him off the stage (leading to a period of convalecence), at which point Flo & Eddie chose to go their own way and FZ was forced to record a couple of fusion-influenced albums with which you may be familiar Wink .  (I am sure FZ did not view it this way at the time.)

Playground Psychotics gets extra +/- for including some stuff from Lennon's Sometime in New York City concert, but i dont' think it's not enough to push it into contention.

Tough call between FE and CR...

Fillmore East.

Chunga's Revenge almost.

I do wish the former was longer...but ahh well. The latter is underrated IMO. But I agree, this is probably my least favorite period of his, but the more I listen to it the more they grow the songs grow on me.

I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive
Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

I went with JABFLA for the obvious "Billy" as well as "Eddie". I remember Eddie's commercials as a child growing up in L.A. so it is a fond memory for me.

I agree; this is definitely his worst period. I went with Chunga's Revenge.

Mi 2 , I remember laughing as I was listening to the Mud Shark saga. Silly I know, teenage angst and all! Chunga's revenge is right behind (my first Zappa album) . I never considered Flo & Eddie with any interest at all. While still very lewd, Overnite Sensation was just so much better musically.

I guess I should say that my sentimental attachment was not really for the album..  I've never really been much into Zappa... but is for being the soundtrack to the good old days of debauchery and good times (those I remember that is).

Apostrophe was the Zappa album that really grabbed me.. and was my second... was told that was the album I would love.. and I did.

Agree ! terrible period ...only for collectors of Zappa ''music'' if music is the right word to describe what's in these recordings.
''Chunga revenge'' by a mile ; not that this is a masterpiece but who in its right mind can enjoy 25 mns 0f ''Billy the mountain'' today?
