I just bought one album by each (the ones of which this poll name is formed). I haven't really digested them yet, but I think I like De-Loused better.

I'm curious, though, about which band is more highly regarded (over the course of their respective careers), since I think of them both being in the same category (Progressive Alt-Punk-Rock). Confused

Kind of very hard to compare both bands, really. A song like The Willing Well is nothing like a song like
Cassandra Geminni.

For my vote I simply focused on who I listen to more, even though I like both bands a lot. I voted for C&C
because - although Mars Volta is much more highly regarded - I'm more of a guy for rock melodies rather than post-punk dissonance.

However, now that I've said that I will surely be carried away by a torch wielding crowd. LOL

My money is on Mars Volta to win this poll, but I think you should give C&C's new album a spin (unless
that's the one you have... there are 2 Good Apollos, you know). If you like something more straightforward
then C&C is for you, if you like it complex and weird then MV are much better.

I love both band. Each was really important in the formation of my musical taste.
That being said, I think that the Mars Volta are better because Coheed's discography is way too spotty (several clunkers on each disc) while the Mars Volta have been always consistent and progressive and just amazing.

Ah. I have the first part, with "Welcome Home". Didn't notice the second part on the discography Embarrassed

I really like The Mars Volta but I have only heard the PA samples of Coheed & Cambria.

If you like that one then I heartily recommend the second part. Personally I didn't care for Part 1 too much...
Good songs, yes, but a bit slow at points. I think that No World For Tomorrow is far superior. Thumbs%20Up

while I think Coheed has a couple of filler songs per each album...but TMV isn't immaculate either. Both bands are great. I think they'reboth moving away from the sound that made them famous (TMV with Bedlam and C&C with No world for tomorrow) but still good arraingements on both parts.

Best by each:
TMV - Frances the mute (De-Loused is close...)
C&C - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth (Good Apollo part 1 is better instrumentally, but ehh............)

Mars Volta easily. They are really keen on moving forward and exploring new territory.

Coheed is nothing new really.

to be honest, Coheed and Cambria. I LOVE Deloused in the Comatorium but i cannot get into the next 3 of their releases.

amputechture has its moments as does frances the mute, but i never find myself wanting to listen to them apart from Deloused.

Coheed on the Other hand has 1 CD close to the level of Deloused (In Keeping Secrets . . . ) and one great CD (Good Apollo . . . ) and i just enjoy listening to them much more than TMV.

I love both, but The Mars Volta is leagues beyond Coheed. I feel like Coheed are holding themselves back to be more mainstream.

And unlike most here, I feel like their newest album was a step back, or a sidestep. Either way, I don't think they progressed at all, and that last track was so disjointed and rushed. What a disappointing ending to the saga! I grew to like the album quite a bit, but overall it feels like they rushed to get it out (which may be true because they hit several bumps between Good Apollo I and II). Mother Superior could have been a bit more epic and less repetitive, I already said what I thought about the very end, the beginning of that "suite" was completely undeveloped, "Feathers" was a nice poppy song and then they went into that dark bridge with a guitar solo and what not which could have flowed into a completely new passages, but they abruptly moved to another chorus (with poor flow I might add), and generally speaking they fall back to the verse-chrous-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus structure too much.

I am really excited to hear the new material with Chris on drums, whenever that may be.

...by me?               The Mars Volta

....better musicians, more varied songwriting, more complex... but if you like Coheed & Cambria, I think you'll also like THREE very much so

^I would like to hear your guys' thoughts on the new album vs. the old one. You, King By-Tor, specifically suggested the new one over the others, but I would definitely suggest it after at least one other one for the reasons I mentioned. Everyone I know agrees with me about it, but most of the archives' people like the new one the most it seems.

Also, do you really consider The Willing Well one song? All of their suites are mainly grouped together so the lyrics can focus on a subplot. The music between each track doesn't flow and none of the songs bear any themes that they share to give them the feeling of a coherent whole. They also play the songs seperately live.

For some reason the new album just sits with me better, I think it's because they decided to go for a generally
more flowing direction (for some reason some of the tracks on the first album just didn't feel right). As much as I
like The Suffering i think a track like The Running Free is better. This is all just my own tastes of course. The
new album gets me to tap my toe more than the old one did. I also appreciate the fact that there are less "slow"
moments on the new one, because as much as I like slow songs C&C are definitely a band better played
bombastically like in a song like Justice In Murder.

I'll also take the songs that comprise The End Complete over The Willing Well any day. Somehow they're
just more memorable. I don't know how in that sense, but I'll get back to you when I figure that out.

As a prog head I definitely like to think of the songs as one big song, but with nothing (music wise) to tie
them together I do generally accept that they are separate tracks. Here's hoping for a "sider" from the boys
one day!

The Willing Well songs never really struck me as anything similar except in name only

Agreed. But The End Complete is a different story! Much better I think.

^I disagree, haha. That first track is completely undeveloped (cool riff though) and just ends with no flow into the next track. Same lack of flow throughout, but all of the actual songs, save for the disjointed and poor final track (good ideas though) are great. However, I prefer The Willing Well.

I am glad that there is a good reception of Coheed so far. They are a marvelous band but it seemed like a lot of the members here looked down at them. Undeservedly so. I would like to see them stretch out a bit into more progressive territory, though. I'm not a stubborn prog-only fan, but I have a serious aversion to formulaic and predicatble song structures, and that is the one thing Coheed has left to improve.

Agree to disagree! Smile

Although I agree with wanting to see them explore more proggy areas, but hey, they make some darn good
rock music. I too am befuddled by the dislike of them... maybe it's the higher-than-high vocals or the fact that
they toy with some "emo" elements. Who knows.

Hopefully now that the Armory Wars are over they'll do something proggy and unique. However, there's
also the chance that they'll fizzle and die LOL

Hopefully not!

Haha, yea. Heck, with Chris Pennie in tow, and the saga over, I was thinking they should change their name and start fresh with a little less restraint on their obvious capabilies. But I'll still be happy with them doing what they're doing now.

Coheed and Cambria are just easier to listen to.  I enjoy both bands and I think both Bedlam and No World are great albums.  But if I find myself going to C&C a lot more simply because I don't have to get ready to listen to them.  TMV I have to be ready to digest.  Again, I really enjoy both bands but C&C get my vote.

the story isn't over...they still need to write the first part.

by the way, not to plug my radio show or anything, but since that's what this thread is about, we have actually played the whole http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Y2AZXPLV - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3 album on our show . just thought you guys would be interested in our opinions and also, in some more information about the music, which we always provide on various topics per show.

I like both, and honestly I can't vote. I have all of Coheed's albums and all but one of the Mars Volta's albums. Who I like better really depends on the mood I am in at the time.

I prefer The Mars Volta, they are really one of the most original and best bands ever. Coheed are great, but Volta is on another level
