I've been playing in a band for a number of years (1990-94, and then last year we reformed). We're an improvising band of many styles, including folk, experimental, jazz, rock, and so forth. (often at the same time) We've even been called Space Rock in the past. We don't have a name, instead we play under a different name each time, always starting with the letter "A" - this led to us referring to ourselves as 'the a band' for ease of reference, and many people think that's our name.
Our first album was released in 1993 on Siltbreeze records in the USA (review and sleeve http://marblestature.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html - here , you'll need to scroll down to the 2.12 entry) Our second album was a self-released CD in 1997 (see http://noise.as/shop/other/a-band - here for details) and our third album was released in 2003 on QBICO records in Italy (details http://cdn.scratchrecords.com/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=253&CFID=707011&CFTOKEN=2 - here )
We have a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Band - wiki page which includes links to our myspace page, photos, and our website
We reformed last June after more than ten years apart, and we've just made a DVD of that reunion gig

I'm listening to myspace now... I like Arthuruncle, particularly, that's got a neat "avant" experimental vibe.

update:
We've just recorded a new double album, hopefully it'll be released by a Florida-based label later this year.

Update:
That double album I mentioned is almost out. Next month we're recording (at Ealing Film Studios, no less) our next album (which will be a Canadian release), and in August we have a week-long residency at the Edinburgh Fringe (we'll be doing eleven gigs in eight days). Meanwhile, we're being interviewed for a book on the history of British experimental underground music by the man who recently wrote http://www.thewire.co.uk/articles/2263/ - this article about us.
Next year will be our 20th anniversary, I'm thinking of maybe a Boxset release from the archives.....

Update:
The Canadian album release I mentioned above is reviewed on page 64 of the current issue of The Wire magazine, which has also put our name on the front cover twice this year.
That archive boxset idea I mentioned became a seven-hour set of DVDs filmed between 1991 and this year.
Our 20th anniversary tour included a five-hour set in the town where we first started, Nottingham. We're about to embark on a regular monthly residency in a London art gallery.
We've just headlined the last day of a Festival which Faust headlined on the previous night (One of Faust actually asked what time we were going to be playing, and somebody else played with both them and us, and said he preferred us)
We're probably not prog, that'd be too restrictive. But to give you an idea of our sound, the recent gig included a cello, three violinists, three drummers, two theremins, various percussion & whistles, plus the usual guitar & bass & keyboards - there were more than twenty of us in all.

I'll check the band out to see if there is potential for an addition to the PA database. A proper band name would be needed though in case that happens

I'll ask the Avant team for the evaluation. BTW I've heard of the A Band before, but I don't recall where.

I suppose "The A Band" would have to suffice for an actual name.

Any progress with this yet?
Meanwhile, we're in the press again http://www.thewire.co.uk/articles/5637/
Since my last post here we've played all over England, from Southampton to Newcastle, and now we're making a film.

This photo shows the lineup at last weekend's Supernormal festival, which includes ourselves headlining, along with several other bands who are listed on the PA database. After the set we joined in with a friend's 36-hour performance for another 90 minutes or so. (next year we aim to beat his 36-hours with a 700-hour performance, if we can find a venue)

I relistened to the samples. I'm sorry but I still can't decide. What I hear is noisy ambient. Can the band suggest what's the track that they think is most representative?

As the band lineups and musical styles constantly change, I would say no individual track is most representative. - we can be a gently ambient trio, a roaring 20-30 piece juggernaut, and everything in between, sounds ranging from jazzy quartet to death metal mayhem to a capella drone, etc etc
These youtube clips give a good idea of how we can sometimes sound. They'll have to suffice as 'representative'.

I like the term 'noisy ambient' - in 1991 a record shop called our first single 'ambient hardcore', years before we heard of anyone else using that term. Half that single was gentle A Capella babbling

You need just one more vote, I think. To speed-up yoy may try to PM somebody in the ZART team.

Effectively "speed up" is a funny term in this context....but our team is one of the smallest because there are not much nerds like us around.
Bj-1 is officially undecided, then there are SaltyJon, 801listennow, Hemulen and APerson.
"A Band" messaging "A Person" sounds fun isn't it?

PA has a new first (alphabetically speaking) band.
We're also listed first http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Free_improvisation_ensembles" rel="nofollow - here
and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:British_experimental_musical_groups" rel="nofollow - here
But of course alphabetical order counts for little otherwise Aardvarks would be the best animal and Aardman the best film company.

Not as many as The Albion Band, yet. But in 2010 I think we had over 80 people playing with us at various gigs (including 30 making their debut with us, and 18 who first played with us in the early 90s)
And now we have a 2CD "Greatest Hits" album out. Over 150 minutes long. I'll put the details on the site soon.
