How did the Beatles get the fuzz or razor toned feedback on I Feel Fine without a distortion box..

This is from Ian Macdonald's highly recommended book "Revolution in the Head"

I Feel Fine - a sustained low A on bass as a foundation for feedback from Lennon's Rickenbacker obtained by striking the note with the volume switch down then turning up while pointing the pickups towards the amp.

I Need You - volume pedal

It's Only Love - Leslie 145 cabinet
Think For Yourself - one bass through a Vox amp and one di'd using a distortion unit.
