I think the top one for me would be the finale to "Sphynx Lightning" by Tangerine Dream

Let me think.... (In no particular order)

In 2112 after Geddy says "And the meek shall inherit the earth)
After the acustic introduction in "A farewell to kings"
ANTHEM
In "Dancing with the moonlit knight"
King crimsons "red" "21 century..." "Larks part 2" "Level 5"
I suppose prog metal has many of those
At Rothery solos in Mispaced chilhood (Is not like headbanging exacly is more like a moment when you raise your fist and use the lighter)
at the finale of "Nine feet underground"

'Running Shoes' and 'Arabs With Knives' from Roger's 'Pro's and Cons'
'Murder' from Gilmour's 'About Face'
'Kashmir' (from start to finsh!), No Quarter and 'When the Levee Breakes'

Just a few that spring to mind.....

these all invoke some form of head-movement.

Fly On A Windshield
21st Century Schizoid Man
Sleepwalkers
Lady Fantasy (final section's opening)
Time Lament (Colosseum, it's the drum thing that gets me)
Down The Dolce Vita, certainly
Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
Gypsy, when everything comes back together after the organ break
Toccata, sometimes, depending on my mood
Soliloquy (from 2112, at the exact moment 'Just think of what my life might be, in a world like I have seen!')
Larks' Tongues In Aspic pt. 1 with the powerchords occasionally gets me. Depends on how I'm listening, though.

All the ones I can think of at the moment. Hardly unexpected, though.

Yea, that IS heavy, indeed. It even reminds me of Iron Maiden. But then again, Iron Maiden WAS heavily influenced by Genesis and other prog bands, so it's not really that surprising.

The riff in Lady Fantasy is also quite cool, not to mention 21st Century Schizoid Man which is a total headbanging-song anyway. Also the beginning of Heart of the Sunrise by Yes is quite heavy.

Rush has plenty of these headbanging moments, but Rush is also quite heavy metal in general.

At the rock club I frequented in the 1980s, whenever it came to that line, there was a huge

"ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR"

Before a mass onset of headbanging (and air drumming )

i think that bands like BEHOLD THE ARCTOPUS and CO-CONSPIRATOR sort of put the whole METAL and PROG thing together.

as far as king crimson goes, they have always incorporated a lot of pentatonic minor riffage into their songs from day one, so there is the blues aspect (that almost looked like "blues aspic", LOL!), HAPPY WITH... has a sort of NIN feel, LEVEL FIVE has some metal in there, the different incarnations of POWER TO BELIEVE have organic WORLD elements (power circle, etc). i like how they make the stew, throw in a head of cabbage, a head of lettuce and a head of julius ceasar! lol! and throw out THE RULE BOOK!

Gentle Giant - A Cry for Everyone and In A Glass House both have a rockin section.

Camel- Lady Fantasy,

I Agree, loads of King Crimson and Rush.

Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery, Cross Eyed Mary, TAAB Live in 1978, Hunting Girl... + loads more, more obvious ones.

ELP - Karn Evil 9 and Knifes Edge can get a bit of an oul headbang started sometimes.

Yes - Gates of Delerium has some bits.

Previously mentioned heavy sections in "The Musical Box", "The Knife", and "Dancing with the Moonlight Knight" are great.

I'd also add "Ogre Battle" by Queen.

The most unexpected headbanging I can remember was when I first put on the ABWH Cd.  I was grooving along kinda bored with "The Order of the Universe", then it suddenly goes into "Rock Gives Courage."  After I picked myself up off the floor, I couldn't stop laughing.

But, hey, I still crank it when that part comes on.

1. Rush's early albums and S&A
2. Greg Lake's distorted bass in The Barbarian
3. The Hut of Baba Yaga on ELP's Pictures at an Exhibition
4. Machine Messiah by Yes. I never quite expected that from Steve Howe
5. Asia's Sole Survivor and Time Again

Bohemian Rhapsody of course; but maybe now it's been played to death it's no longer UN-expected.

How about Fear of a Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree. That heavy riff at about 6mins makes me bang my head.

Also Knights of Cydonia by MUSE is another one that immediately springs to mind.

One of These Days...Pink Floyd. I love the version from Live at Pompeii. Truly head banging.

Quite a few moments on Yes' Magnification album from 2001 (gotta be their best in a long time!).  In particular:
I just love the slow build of the title track (it becomes irrestistable rock'n'roll at 1:04, when Alan White comes in on the drums).
"Spirit of Survival", of course, and "Don't Go" into which it segues - I react particularly strongly to that tune 'cos the lyrics include my slogan for life: "Don't take love for granted".  I definitely think there are too many people out there who do exactly that - and get fooled again and again!  (By the way, has anybody else noticed that "Don't Go" also contains a reference to "Won't Get Fooled Again" in the lyrics?  Sweet.)
OK, next up: Chris Squire's vocal spotlight "Can You Imagine" - at about 1:28, it goes from being a gentle piano ballad to full-on hard rock.
The fantastic drumming and killer bass riff at about 2:10 in "Dreamtime", especially after you've heard the ominous horn bits at about 1:09.  In fact what's so remarkable about the whole album is that it shows that combining an orchestra with a rock band does not necessarily equal sappy balladry!  ("Soft as a Dove", easily the album's weakest link, notwithstanding, of course.)  The only other album I've heard which sounds anything like it, in fact, is Chris Squire's 1975 solo release Fish Out of Water - but that album doesn't have enough guitar to be headbanging in the traditional sense.
I'll submit one more example: I'm not sure if this really counts as prog rock but here goes.  Roxy Music's "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" (from For Your Pleasure, 1973 - a most apt title!) has a killer guitar solo at 3:07, right after the famous lines "I blew up your body / But you blew my mind".

Oh Yeah! The Phillips monster riff and simmering solo at the end with Rutherford's bass stabbing away is just plain devastating , probably my favorite ending ever. Been like 36 years on and I still get a buzz. Embarrassed

PTree's Aenesthesize also has a few hair-raising moments
