I've been a longtime fan of prog (i'm 45) and thanks to PA i've discovered a plethora of bands i've never heard of before, mainly Magma,Spock's beard,Focus etc. Have you made some extraordinary discoveries yourselves? Name your 3 best.

My top three would be:

Van Der Graaf Generator. Without PA I probably would have heard them but never would have sufficient time or resources to research them...PA fixed that and offered a mp3 of "The Sleepwalkers" which took a few listens but eventually I was hooked. Still am.

Genesis. I thought they were a pop band. Was proved otherwise. To great advantage.

Radiohead. A friend mentioned them to me and I would have passed them off as some punk or alternative band but I had remembered seeing their name on this website. Therefore I researched them and found a goldmine.

Actually. Scratch Radiohead and add Gentle Giant. I would have found out about Radiohead.

My latest was Quidam.  They had one of the higher ranked albums from 2007 and I noticed them when I looked at the list.  Bought it and really like it.

Wow, there are far more than three that were great for me.  But I'll try

Comus
Hamonium
Nil

I should give an honorable mention to the site for causing me to reevaluate Porcupine Tree.  I've been on something of a PTree binge for a couple months now.  I first heard them back in 1999 and saw them live in 2001 and just wasn't impressed or interested.  All the praise they get on this site was getting on my nerves Big%20smile so I thought I'd better try and see what all the fuss was about.  I must say, I still don't understand what is so genius or "progressive" about them, but I've definetly come around to enjoying them a lot.  So thanks to the archives members for that anyway.

Arcturus - I'd have been turned off by the metal epithet without the samples
Il Balletto Di Bronzo
and The Mahavishnu Orchestra

are a few that I doubt I'd have encountered without PA.

Bootcut, Nemo and Azureth - there are others, but those I would've found without PA as well, given that they are pretty big names in Prog.

PFM
King Crimson
Spock's Beard

Although they're all big names, I wouldn't have discovered them without PA. That's the best part with being relatively new in the prog world: an endless amount of discoveries, without having to dig deep for those lesser known gems.

I found ProgArchives in a very early state of mine... So I discovered a lot of band, msot recent of which must be Arena. But, as the top three, I could easily pick up Caravan and Camel. In fact through these I found my way to fusion and Canterbury scene which both have become my personal favourites. Oh, yes, and then the third. Absolutely The Flower Kings. I listened to their sample, bought one record, and now I try not to miss anything the release!

Definitely, Los Jaivas.
It was not love at first sight, but it seems it's love till the rest of my life. Smile
I don't think I could "meet" this wonderful Chilean band without PA. Thanks to all who reviewed "Alturas de Macchu Picchu" CD and DVD, you helped me to find music I was searching for. Clap

If we're picking genres, Canterbury, no question about it.  It went from something I had never even heard of to my favorite genre in a few months - I'm more excited about music now than I ever have been in my life.

Best non-Canterbury find on the site is IZZ.

I owe a lot to this website. I came on here having only heard dream theater a long while back, right around the time they released Train of Thought, and have discovered HUNDREDS of bands. the three i probably would never have found out about are

Maudlin of the Well
Devin Townsend
Godspeed you! Black Emperor.

These are among my favorite ever and I owe a lot of it to PA

Gentle Giant
Van der Graaf Generator
Peter Gabriel (solo)
All three are very high in my top artists and I did not listen to them before my stint on PA (except for the song Sledgehammer, you can thank VH1's top 100 videos of all time for that one.)

The whole Math Rock/Post Rock style was completely foreign to me before I started coming on this site, and look where I am now, a collab on the Math Rock team. The genre is probably the style that I most enjoy now and I owe it all to PA and the members on here with their knowledge and recommendations. Not to mention the countless other bands I've gotten into on this website, but we'd be here all day.

Man, this is really hard, since this site has been so helpful in the development of my musical taste in the past three years.

I can't name three artists, but I can name four: (In no particular order)
1. King Crimson
2. Magma
3. Ozric Tentacles
4. Frank Zappa

Along with Rush, those are my top five. Big%20smileClap

Prog Archives has been a major source of music for me in the past three years (I've been a member for one of those years).  I can't say that all of my music has been from here, but a good amount of it was either found here or mentioned to me by other members.

Without PA, I wouldn't have known about:
Porcupine Tree // everything by Steve Wilson
Opeth
Camel
Explosions in the Sky
and basically my entire record collection and at least 70% of my CDs.

(I feel like I need to mention more: MO, FZ, OT, PoS, PF, ELP, PFM, RPI in general, GYBE!, etc etc)

(I also discovered my favorite non-prog genre here by recommendations of members: Minimalism)

I forgot about Devin. Mind you , I was out searching for the perfect cup of coffee. Black. And I was given just five minutes. Without the threat of total annihilation, though Wink

Partially VDGG, but totally Caravan and Canterbury genre as a whole. I heard some positive recommendations before my PA era, tried Caravan and it was really good shot - especially for Camel fan.

Uh, can't think of a single band that I got into from the PA directly...

...HOWEVER, the archives have become influential in bands that I've heard of and need further investigation, for example:

The Mars Volta
The Decemberists
Iron Maiden
The Doors

Bands that I had considered getting into before hand but never quite got around to, until I checked 'em out further on the site (well, 'cept for the Doors. Took a gamble on finding 'em here after listening to Morrison Hotel).

My favourite finds thanks to PA have recently been cemented thus:

Art Bears: love
Picchio dal Pozzo: love
John Greaves: love

I vaguely knew King Crimson et al before I visited the site, and I also knew about the hopelessly obscure japanese bands because, you know, I become a compulsive japanophile once every so often.

(Excuse the cut and paste artist titles, also in reverse discovery order mostly, not a bad list for having haunted this site for nearly two years.)
Gongzilla
Reasoning, The
Pineapple Thief, The
No Sound
Talisma
Parallel Mind
Phideaux
Mr. Bungle
Maserati (indirectly through EITS's label's sampler included with Explosions In The Sky    All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone)
Explosions In The Sky
Pure Reason Revolution
Triggering Myth, A
Radiohead
Also some credit to a few others goes to AOL's progressive radio station, but since I've discovered the PA I haven't felt the need to go there too often anymore.

This is also a great site for being the first to find out about new releases by old favorites. Big%20smile

Indukti
Zip Tang
Magma

...and I echo the sentiments about really finding about the bands we already think we know of....  Just a great place to start to get a feel about the bands you want to get to know and where to start.  Really has become my favorite site and rarely leaves my screen.
