I love them. I don't like Train of Thought or Six Degrees that much but
I find Images & Words and Metropolis pt 2 excellent, not to mention
Awake. Yes, they, or their Images & Words album, defines the prog
metal genre.

Musically.... for the heavy stuff, they are very good. The voice? Loses me every time. Something about James LaBrie's voice just ruins the experience. I have yet to make it through an entire DT album without punching the eject button and slappin' on some McGill, Manring, Stevens.

i love labrie, one of my fave vocalists, their original vocalist, charlie dominici is actually horrendous, he is so high pitched that only bats can appreciate him!
labrie has so much emotion in his voice, its also very original as most traditional metal bands have gruff vocals, probably from the metallica influence, tho sabbath, the originals did not need gruff vocals. Metal is very different now though.

I like them, but they tend to get a little boring.
Scenes from a memorie is ok, and some songs from the various other albums are quite decent aswel. I can't manage to listen an album in full without dozin' off to sleep however. I have the DVD live at Budokan, I only listened the first hour (took me three days to get so far) bores me to tears.

Why do we have to have devisive "Love or Hate" polls?
They only tend to stir up arguments, especially when people like me say stuff like;
Dream Theater are probably the most overrated band I've ever heard, and Images and Words is nothing short of below average, unoriginal music played by technically highly competent people.
There is not much on "Images and words" beyond standard rock song and FM ballad format, with a few stolen Metallica riffs and unnecessary fast playing thrown in. The only thing that's technically amazing about it is the players' techniques - not the music itself, which is the important thing.
I can't hate it - it's not bad enough.
But I do hate the way people go on about them as if they've achieved something new. They haven't. Their style is evident in music from 20 years ago.
Now you can't say that about the old school progbands like Genesis, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, ELP, Rush...

This binary sh*t is very refined for you, as you're used
to degenerate teenage noise (i can't call it music).

dream theatre haven't .. Maybe the folks of cynic.. but dream theatre?
I almost feel like dream theatre is the ELP of prog metal.. besides that ELP makes good music (when comparing).. A dream theatre fan hasn't taken a look further.. DREAM THEATRE IS THE BEST PROGBAND.. THAT'S IT!!!..

Genesis and Brand X are worthy candidates for the 'definition of progressive rock' laurels, IMHO...
A very good swing drummer, too.
Apart from that, I consider myself a DT fan but I don't think they're the best band and never have.
Still, a DT hater can't look farther beyond 'DT IS THE WORST BAND!' and that's it. Some of them will even go as far as to say DT are worse than ELP...

I own the Cynic album, 'Blackwater Park' and have heard considerable amounts of music from both In the Woods... and Arcturus. All top-notch stuff I enjoy as much as I do DT, but comparing them to DT is slightly off the mark, as all these bands you mentioned have firm roots in death metal and black metal, which is not the case with DT. And the 'look at me play' accusations are subjective anyway, I could say the same about Cynic, I could say the same about jazz and fusion of all shapes and sizes (stuff I'm really into) but I see no reason why a musician shouldn't make use of his technical abilities. And the evaluation of the musical end these abilities serve is subjective anyway.
I have to admit I'm completely new to this 'fanatical DT fan' phenomenon. I have a few friends who are highly appreciative of this band but don't hesitate to criticise any flaws they hear in it. One of these friends of mine is an accomplished guitarist, probably the best Irish-folk guitarist in Poland but also proficient in other genres and he values DT highly, even though they are theoretically the opposite of his cup of tea. The only person I know I could describe as being somewhat fanatical about DT is the sweetest girl in the world... very good painter, too.
So, Radioactive Toy, I hope I've proven myself worthy of speech.

Speaking of Iraq... http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=30299 - http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=30299
Regarding Dream Theater, they're basically the band that started me off listening to prog, along with Rush, King Crimson and Marillion. Maybe if they weren't I wouldn't like their music, but as it as I do. Maybe they're not terribly original, but they meld all their influences into something unmistakably by them (apart from the Metallica riffs ). I much prefer Cynic and Arcturus, among several other more inventive metallers. In the Woods I'm not sure about, although I loved them when I first listened, the songs I have don't seem to have much depth/lyricism to the music. I'll definitely give a listen to some tracks from Omnio now, though. For Opeth, I do like them but I don't think they're quite in the upper spheres of inventiveness (if that doesn't sound too pretentious ). Also, Dan Swanö seems to music similar to Opeth and far better, so getting hold of Opeth takes a lower priority.

A lot just listen to the so-called "neoclassical metal" scene, most of which is horribly derivative (i.e. sounds to varying degrees like a mixture of the more generic Dream Theater parts, Symphony X, Malmsteen and Rhapsody)

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with either of them (there is, but I listen to both anyway). What I'm saying is the numerous bands who've followed them, copied them and brought nothing new to their music are horrible.

I hate unoriginal, uninspired, uninspiring, loud and ugly music.
Whether DT actually falls in this category, I don't know. It just might.
The reason why I cannot put them in that category is that I just don't
know them good enough to be able to back up such a claim. I have
listened to their music (or what can be described as music) enough to
say it's not my cup of tea, though. I have, however, created such a
dislike for all metal that I simply will not listen to them in the
extent that would enable me to really hate them.
Cheers

Metal is the antithesis of prog:
It's binary, non evolutive, boring, not sophisticated at all, played by unskilled pseudo-musicians who only know play two notes!
So the term prog-metal is a nonsense!
DT is prog, if you compare it to rap or to the stuff they call "r'n'b".
Everything is relative!

i don't see why i have to hate or love them.
when it comes to DT, it always comes down to love and hate on this forum. silly.
how about a poll where you rate them from 9 to 10? much better. it would give a clearer view of people's opininons. i dont know, maybe it already has been done.

When American bands learn to spell properly i may treat them with a bit more respect, talking phonetically is more disrespectful. especially Polish names where the w is pronounced as a v.

Don't you think that the fact that they are a "love or hate" band says a lot about them? I mean different stuff (for better of for worse) is always going to cause that kind of reaction on people, fans and musicians. And don't pretend to end that awsome polarity DT creates . So keep on dreaming, in or outside the theater, where you like it most.

NO DOUBT ONE OF THE LEADERS OF PROG METAL.THE ONLY THINK I DISSLIKE IS THAT SOMETIMES THE GIVE YOU THE IMPRESSION THAT THEY WANT TO WIN A SPEED CONTEST INSTED OF EXPRESSING THEIR FEELINGS. GREAT IDEAS SOMETIMES COEXIST WITH ´´TOO MUCH´´ SOLOS.
IF YOU PUT ASIDE TRAIN OF THOUGHT WHICH I I FIND FLAT(WITH THE EXCEPTION O STREAM OF CONSIOUSNESS AND IN THE NAME OF GOD), THE OTHER ALBUMS HAVE SOME IMPRESSIVE IDEAS.(EVEN FALLING...)
