While I enjoy the music of Prog, there were some bands that never made a dent in the US or in the Mainstream area. Here are the bands I've admired and the albums that were cult followings or essential progsters.
1. Egg - The Polite Force
2. Fruupp - Modern Masquerades
3. Greenslade - Greenslade
4. Rare Bird - Rare Bird
5. Carmen - Fandangos in Space
6. Jonesy - No Alternative
7. Marsupilami - Arena
8. Bluebell Wood - Big Sleep
9. Man - Do You Like It Here Now, Are You Settling In?
10. Paladin - Charge!

Hmmm...I think it is a good list, but the true underground scene belongs to the avant-garde music (when it comes to prog of course) bands like Can, Henry Cow, Magma and more. Well I never heard much Egg... but since you put it in first place...I'll go check them out.
