Aufklarung (even though I've only heard one song by them... imagine that!)

Q V L and Banco but I figured Banco needed no help.

Stormy 6 were a great Italian RIO band, and I also love Picchio del Pazzo. Recently, I've also got into Corte De Miracoli, who are more in the classic Italian style of Banco, PFM, New Trolls etc.

Stormy Six are fantastic!! I've only got L'Apprendista at the moment but I think I'll be getting some more in the near future.

I adore the Italian scene though. So much good music from just one country! How did it happen?! Good to see Metamorfosi on this poll - the band that ELP ought to have sounded like!

Le Orme, closely followed by Celeste.

Other great italian bands :

Pierrot lunaire (their first album, in the spirit of Celeste, their second one being more experimental)

Sensitiva immagine (in the line of Locanda delle fate)

Il paese dei balocchi (it could be labelled as classical music)

Capitolo 6 (very dramatic vocals with flute solos reminiscent of earlier Jethro Tull)

De de lind

A piedi nudi  (the best metal-prog band IMHO)

Deus ex machina (already cited by Maani, outstanding jazz-fusion)

Cantina sociale (a new art-rock band, that is not really amazing but cool to listen to)

Il rovescio della medaglia irritates me a bit with their pompous music, at times a copy carbon of bach's music.

Locanda's my pick, without even having to think about it, but DEM would have been my second choice. And I may be nitpicking, but I don't think Metamorfosi really belongs in the first tier.

The only ones I listen to are
Il Volo - Essere, o non essere!
Picchio dal Pozzo - same
Luciano Basso - Voci
Sensations Fix - Portable Madness

these are better to me, because you dont have to
listen around the vocals that I dont understand and
the english versions are pretty cheesy IMO.

Other - Goblin

PFM - best band to start with if you're new to Italian prog and want to be eased in - highly accessible, yet deeply satisfying prog

I hva only heard a few of those, but if it's between them, my vote goes to AREA at the moment. Although some of Banco's stuff is fantastic too.

PFM,most definitely.Along with Locanda Del Fate closer to British prog than the others, though not as diverse as Banco, yet more consistent.
Deus Ex Machina are too challenging a listen for my ears.
Locanda only have 2 albums but remind me too much of PFM,but a good band nonetheless.
Of the rest Le Orme are ok and Area do nothing for me.

Italy is certainly a rich vein of Prog Rock, something I was completely unaware of until I joined this forum.

I like what i've heard so far, but don't ask me what I've heard, for i honoustly don't know.

I'm dedicating some time into investigating Italian prog bands, the language barrier does make it a difficult venture

Museo Rosenbach, definitely. It's a pity they've come out with just 2 albums. PFM follows.

I like except many many here mentioned very much Pholas Dactylus - "Concerto Delle Menti" (1973) for example. Very interesting album. Anybody who does know it?

There are many greats, but no one can beat the beauty and greatness of Storia di un Minuto and Per un Amico.

Museo Rosenbach come in close second, followed by Area and Il Balleto di bronzo

My top 5:

Banco - Darwin!
Biglietto per L'inferno - s/t
Locanda delle Fate - Forse le Lucciole non si Amano Piu
Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra
Quella Vecchia Locanda - s/t

I find all these and many other 70's italian albums superior compared to anything released by the english bands. Some people seem to complain about the italian vocals. For me it's hard to understand this. I believe it's because I have loved the italian vocals since the first time I heard italian prog. I prefer italian vocals over english vocals any day. It doesen't bother me att all that I don't understand the vocals. Besides, in most cases the vocalists a simply fantastic. There are only a few english vocalists that can compare.

This is just my opinion. Needed to get this off my chest.

If this argument was valid, I would never have approach any music whose lirics weren't sung ins spanish or italian, so I wouldn't get into anglosaxon prog. Come on, even now I have troubles in understanding most of the english lirics...

The one band missing from the Poll or any postings so far (unless I overlooked it) is Semiramis, who recorded a completely mindblowing album in 1973 called 'Dedicato A Frazz'. Frightening, almost proto-metal guitar work and rhythms, smashed up against Genesis/'Nursery Cryme'-era textures. A bit like Biglietto Per L'inferno's first album, because it's raw, dark, heavy but still symphonic and sublime. Hail SEMIRAMIS!
