Not as a rule, but I do tend to enjoy the dudes that have a vice grip on their balls. Rush, Yes, Iron Maiden... all these bands are what started me off. True, these days it's a lot different, and I'll enjoy anything from Three to Hawkwind in the vocal department, but I vote high-pitched. |

| I like a singer to be quite versatile, but in terms of vocal styles, I dont really have a preference. Certain styles suit certain types of music. I dont believe Roger Waters voice would suit the music of Genesis for example, but it's perfect for the cold bitterness of 70's Floyd. The only vocal style that does nothing for me is growling death metal/thrash metal voices, or metaloid screamers. |

Female ones! ;P but I do enjoy male vocalists like Vander, Stratos, Patton and Hammill who aren't just recognisable but defining, and who aren't afraid to flirt with the ridiculous - Vander's fury, Stratos' bleating, Patton's glossolalia, Hammill's divebombs - because they're more than just a vehicle for lyrics, unlike millions of mediocre rock singers. ------------- FREEDOM OF SPEECH GO TO HELL |

| Don't really know Hawkwind. But the rest I do. But I really like a voice that change tone like Roger Daltrey or David Coverdale although the ones that are there are great but don't think I can decide cause I love all of em. No Vote.. |

Same here exactly. Geddy Lee, Jon Anderson, and Jeff Lynne, as just a few examples, have been some of my favorite vocalists over the years. I also really dig Cedric's singing in the Mars Volta (especially on Bedlam), but I love most vocalist styles nowadays, from the Residents to Magma to Genesis. But for similar reasoning as yours, I had to vote high pitched. |

Last option for me, althought it could be any one of theanswers with the execption of the first. Hawkwind vocals are the responsible for my dislike of what is said to be their masterpiece "Warrior on the Edge of time". I hope my opinion of it will change in the future. |

I guess the deeper as a general rule, ad most high pitch vocalist can be pretty awful. Having said that, most of my favorites are high pitch: Cedric Baxler, Jon Anderson, Robert Plant, Thom York...etc

My preference is whatever style suits the music. In many cases the vocal style makes or breaks the band. At the very least it will attract different fans. Had King Crimson had Jon Anderson as a vocalist it would have been a terrrible combination. I can back this up from Anderson's guest performance on Lizard. I liked his work on that song but imagine that voice on ever KC song. In half the songs it would completely change the tone of the songs, and in the other half it would distract the listener from the intricate melodies and etc. I like every vocal style, however there are some which are at risk of sounding grating and overdone. The most prominent is the death growl found in most black metal and some heavier progmetal. Do NOT get me wrong however, I love the growling style provided it is done well (see Opeth and Ephel Duath). However, there is a lot of bad growling work in metal. Either it is completely unintelligible (most common problem), or it just isn't high quality growling, it just sounds like really raspy singing.
I'm not perfect though and there's one style I don't like, which is the female singer. The problem isn't that it is bad, the problem is that it is very grating. I categorize them as such: a) focused on the singer (aka Nightwish, completely overpowering the music and sometimes sounding operatic and way too produced, or country music, which is just plain annoying; b) they can't sing and they're just there cause they're hot.

| I agree on Hammill. He can do anything and his timbre is so unique. Another one I really like it Mike Patton. He's very versatile, and unique as well, and he, like Hammill, pushes the limits of what singers in rock music can do. |

I like pretty much all vocal ranges, from Roger Waters to Geddy Lee, to Opeth (growls and singing) to Meshuggah. Personal favorites would be Ian Anderson, Chino Moreno of the deftones, Greg Lake and Daniel Gildenlowe. The only style i really dont like are the barf-like vocals of bands like hatebreed, or most female-lead vocals. i dont know what it is about female vocals but they always seem to lack depth and only work in a few situations to my ears. cant get over it.

Excellent poll! I am one of those who voted for the deeper kind of vocals. One of my favourite vocalists of all is Richard Sinclair of Caravan and Hatfield and the North fame, and I also love Greg Lake and Peter Gabriel (especially solo). On the other hand, I also dig the likes of Geddy Lee, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Ian Gillan and Glenn Hughes (probably my all-time favourite singer). I also tend to favour deeper female voices - soprano-style female vocals do very little for me as a rule.

Exactly. That's why my favorite vocalists are Eric Adams (Manowar) and Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden). They are both so talented in so many ways. They are also great performers! ------------- And the sand-castle virtues are all swept away in the tidal destruction the moral melee. |
