In no particular order

Lateralus - Tool
Relayer - Yes
Tales from Topographic Oceans - Yes (Even though it's not that great of an album)
Deadwing - Porcupine Tree
Led Zepplin 4
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
In The Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Scenes From a Memory - Dream Theater
Remedy Lane - Pain of Salvation (Even though I have not heard the album)

Last, I really like the Wax Sulmacra single cover by the Mars Volta.  The should have used that instead of the one currently used for The Bedlam in Goliath

F#A# Infinity by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, it just has this really bleak, despondent feel that I like
Lateralus by Tool, also 10,000 Days, they're both really unique concepts executed very well
In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson, just something about it is really scary
Relayer by Yes, epic artwork, some of my favourite Roger Dean work

I think the best album cover ever by far was the original cover for Chris Karrer's solo album "The Mask". it was a wooden mask created by Karrer himself (he is an artist as well as a musician). a real work of art. when I added the album I added the original artwork too; unfortunately I can't find a picture on the web anymore. the mask was a Balinesian style self-portrait of Karrer. only very few replicas of that mask were made (I think a few hundred) and sold with a numbered certificate. the cover of the re-issue is lame

that Atomic Roster cover is one of those examples of cover art which was originally not meant as album cover; it shows a painting of William Blake called "Nebuchadnezzar".

another Blake painting, "The Ghost of a Flea", was used as cover for the Gilgamesh album "Another Fine Tune You've Got Me Into"

Errmmm... Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Ozrics' music with a passion, but the artowrk has never impressed me. I always feel like I'm entering Dr. Seuss ville when I look at one of their covers. The concpets of the art are kinda cool, though. I've always really liked the concpet of the Jurassic Shift cover art. If only they had a miore capable painter to pull them off . . .

You seem to refer to the way the faces are painted. However, these faces are actually hands made into a fist with the thumb buckling at the top, the pointer stretched out and the little finger not quite closed; the middle and ring finger form the lips. Which is why these faces look so odd.

Hmm, interesting. I never knew that before. Shocked

Like I said, though: the concept or 'idea' of the art isn't the problem, I just don't care much for the style. The odd faces are hardly what I am talking about. The colors are dull, the edges of things look muddy and ugly, like what a kid would draw. To me. I know that alot of people like this style, but to me it's not appealing. I can appreciate the style, however, but I just don't like it. Personally.

But seriousely, that is very interesting about the faces. Learn something new every day, I guess. Cool

1. Public Image Ltd. - The Flowers of Romance. I bought this yesterday for the cover and now I can't stop looking at it. Since it would be silly to stare at the cover without listening to the album, I've decided that from now on this is the only album I'll ever listen to. Luckily it sounds almost as good as it looks.

Here are some of my new faves:

IMO Roger Dean's best cover work.

Another of Roger's best works.

A new fave. Love that man playing the violin, lovely. I love that wave of neo prog covers with the same style.

I've been in Genesis lately, so this is a fave of mine alongside the cover that IMO describes perfectly the music.

Dunno why, but always feel the same atraction as Meddle's one.

Marvellous idea

Love the drawings and colours.

Lovely medieval cover work.

Spacey

Veryyyy Spaceyyyy

Honourable mentions: Relayer, Fragile, Tales, Magician's Birthday, Octopus(Dean's), In a Glass House, DSOTM, Animals, Atom Heart Mother, Obscured by Clouds, Wish you were here, Momentary Lapse of Reason, Division Bell, Lamb, Foxtrot, Trespass, A Place in the Queue, The Music that Dies Alone, In Rock, Fireball, Book of Taliesyn, Led Zep I, IV, Quadrophenia, Stormbringer, Crime, Crisis, Even in the Quitest, Leftoverture, Desatormentandonos, Osibisa, Budgie, Court, and some many others..

Of course Meddle is always a fave of mine, but the above are new ones.

ok, let me post some of mine:

"Hawk Meets Penguin" by the British Amon Düül. I just love the mysterious atmosphere. why for Goddesses sake do a hawk and a penguin meet on a graveyard at night? and why are there mines with burning fuses below them?

"Warrior on the Edge of Time" by Hawkwind. a very melancholy image of the lone warrior

"Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters" by Robert Calvert. especially when you take into account the back cover, where the 3 Starfighters are lying broken on the floor

"Don't Call Us We Call You" by Guru Guru. not their best album, but the cover is great. I love the Escheresque self-reflexivity in it; it reminds me of his picture of the two hands drawing each other

"Red Queen to Gryphon Three". according to Friede (who is an expert on chess) there is a chess variation on a 10x8 board which has 2 gryphons on each side as a piece. the gryphon is the second strongest piece in that variation of chess, combining the moves of knight and bishop. it has a kind of Janus head, which means it forks at the the top, showing the top of the bishop on one side and the top of the knight on the other. the player in the cover picture uses a standard chessboard though.

that's only 5, but I am too lazy now to look for the pics of the other 5. WinkEmbarrassed.another time Tongue
