I have a keyboard. I have a computer. I have a cable connecting my keyboard to the USB drive. I've downloaded the driver software. Can I not record in Audacity this way? I dunno what to do. Confused

Help!

It should work. I record using my keyboard and then taking a line and sending it to my computer's mic input using audacity, which could work for you if for some reason you can't get that to work.

It's just that there's no way I can see how to select my keyboard in audacity through the USB port. I think it's possible to record from there because people are talking about using the USB with audacity. I dunno though!

If you select Preferences, from the Edit menu, the top item is Audio I/O - in theory, your keyboard should appear on the drop-down list in the right-hand pane.

In practice, it depends... what keyboard is it?

Yeah, I've been there, but there's no option for it.

It's a Yamaha DGX-205. Not very good, but OK for a beginner.

Granted I don't have the driver intallation disc, but i did download a driver for it off Yamaha's wbsite and I think it works. Confused

By the way, I got it to work, but not through the USB, but through the mic jack. It would be better to use the USB though....

Maybe I'm saying something stupid, but I've always thought that, in order to connect your keyboard to the computer, you need a MIDI port and a sound-cart. Otherwise (but here I risk to become VERY ridiculous), has your keyboard an exit for the connection to a simple speaker? In this case, with a simple wire such as the one you use with electric guitars just connect the keyboard to the mic input on your computer. (If I've written pure bullsh*t, please, be patient and don't be too rude Embarrassed)

I thought that too, so don't feel stupid...it's a good question.

there are devices available now that allow a digital interface without a MIDI port, either with USB or (so I've heard) Firewire port.
Many newer keyboards have alternate port options built right in: USB + MIDI + ???
the term "sound card" sort of applies more to game machines...you're thinking of an Audio Interface...which may or may not be an actual card, as such.

does this help ?

From what I've been able to trawl through Google, the USB port acts as a MIDI interface.

Audacity is for Audio recording only - it doesn't "do" MIDI, unfortunately - for that you should get something like Magix studio, which is about £50 or so, and is pretty decent for a beginners' recording setup, as it handles both MIDI and Audio, enabling you to mix the two together.

To get the sounds from your keyboard, though, you'll need to use the Audio outs, as far as I can tell.
