Hi!

I decided to talk about my musical project called Spleen Arcana. As I said to Angelo, I hope that it fits this board even if my music is not technical (the old debate, does music has to be technical to be prog? ;))

Band name: Spleen Arcana

Nationality: France

Prog genre:
So hard to say... Progressive rock without being technical as I said... Modern prog maybe, even if there's some vintage sounds like Mellotron, hammond or minimoog... Long songs (10 mn) with a lot of changes and some atmospheric parts.

Website: http://www.spleenarcana.com/ - http://www.spleenarcana.com/

Link to download a complete song: http://www.spleenarcana.com/music/ - http://www.spleenarcana.com/music/
(direct link http://www.spleenarcana.com/audio/download/spleenarcana_trample_on_me.mp3 - here ) http://www.spleenarcana.com/audio/download/spleenarcana_trample_on_me.mp3 -

Members: It's quite simple as it consists of a friend (David) playing the drums and myself playing the other instruments (guitars, bass, keyboards, percussion and vocals).

I work actually on the first album which will be self-produced and recorded at home. "Trample on Me" is the first song from this upcoming album. All the instruments have been recorded actually and I'm recording vocals.

This project is probably not as progressive as the usual suggestions here but I can't really judge by myself, I'm too much inside it if you know what I mean. Anyway, you'll tell me and the topic will be moved if it's "just" prog-related.

Anyway, thanks for listeing :)

Wow this is very good!  Sure, it's not technically complex, but it has a certain flavor to it that I really like.  The gurgling/rumbling at the beginning of Trample on Me is very cool, I really like those sounds.  The music itself is nicely produced and worth listening to.  Thumbs%20Up

Hi there!

My album is nearly finished! You can still download "Trample On Me" here: http://www.spleenarcana.com/audio/download/spleen_arcana_trample_on_me.mp3 - http://www.spleenarcana.com/audio/download/spleen_arcana_trample_on_me.mp3

And a new one, quite different, called "The Missing Piece" here: http://www.spleenarcana.com/audio/download/spleen_arcana_the_missing_piece.mp3 - http://www.spleenarcana.com/audio/download/spleen_arcana_the_missing_piece.mp3

Or listen to them on streaming here: http://www.spleenarcana.com - http://www.spleenarcana.com

The third other songs last 10 minutes and are more in the vein of  "Trample On Me".

Thanks for reading, thanks for listening ;)

Thank you very much Tongue

I try to produce it myself ;) Actually I'm still working to improve the sound as mush as I can. I try to keep as musch as possible dynamics in the sound more than making the music too loud. It seems to be a choice to make today...

Quick question: will you be selling the album in a way that is compatible with what we consider a http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=35133 - 'signed' band ? If so - we might propose you for inclusion in the archives.

Hi Angelo!

Thank you very much for your interest!! If I read well the thread you linked, I'd reply yes to your question as seen as this first album will last 45 minutes, will be professionnally pressed (no cd-r) and will be sold on my website and some music websites. Do you think that there would be any possibility?

Thanks

The decision is up to the genre teams - but if we can agree on an initial subgenre to be checked, they might shed their own light on this. I'll have another listen later this week to see what would be possible.

Ok, thank you very much! "Trample On Me", even if it's not the definitive mixing, is surely more representative of the other songs than "The Missing Piece" which is the "short acoustic quiet song" of the album ;) . I don't really know what genre it could be by the way, a bit of rock, alternative, prog...

I'll let you know here when the album will be available and on streaming on my website. Thanks again for your interest Wink

Agreed, Heavy Prog would be ideal for that song. Where do your influences lie? I swear you remind me of a very good band I used to listen to

Despite that, it is very original stuff, I like it. I would vote to include you.

Hey thank you very much!! It's hard for me to tell which is my influence for that song... People talks about Pink Floyd but I don't really understand why... I thought more about Rush, Tool (for the verses drums part) or Porcupine Tree... Well I feel weird to say that, it sounds pretentious Embarrassed I just can say that my favourite bands are Marillion, Yes, Rush, Porcupine Tree, Mike Oldfield or Pain Of Salvation :)

Thanks for listening :)

thanks for that; FWIW, I personally think your music is a good fit for *somewhere* on PA... (where exactly, is still to be decided..Wink) but an addition won't get the go ahead until the hardware is ready...so keep us informed..Smile

It sounds really great!! I'm not sure about "heavy prog", it fits "Trample On Me" well but the rest of the album is more soft apart from some parts here and there. Maybe it's prog related or crossover prog...

Anyway, I'll keep you informed for sure as soon as possible!

Thank you so much!! Tongue

no; I think you're absolutely right in your analysis.. (but then you would be, wouldn't you??LOLLOL)... Trample On Me certainly has a Heavy Prog feel to it, but the other tracks not so much.  That said, SA certainly aren't Prog-Related... definitely Prog, its just a question of best fit, which may take a little time... but rest assured, we are working on it...ClapClap

That's really really great! Anyway, I guess I can't judge by myself and most of all, it's you who are the specialists ;) It's a good news for me that you find it's prog enough :)

Oh it's funny because I often use the "alternative prog rock" label but it means nothing... And I just saw a thread about this here, interesting!

if you'd had given us an album with one style and influence, it would have been categorised more quickly...albums with lots of styles and influences always take longer, because they have to be evaluated by more than one genre team..Smile

No problem Wink Well I was a bit surprised about symphonic prog rock even if there's some parts which are symphonic, I really like the Crossover prog group, I think it fits better and let guess that my music can be less complex that symphonic prog rock.

But my second album will probably be more extreme metal prog... No I'm joking LOL

I have a question about news. Is there a place where I can post Spleen Arcana's news? This thread is ok for that or maybe somewhere else?

I see that someone added the songs in the mp3 player, that's great!

I know Kinesis, a fine store with good detailed product information, but I stopped buying there since I find most of what I want to buy elsewhere for cheaper and also with lower shipping rates. But it is a fine store (and also listed in the page that I have the link for in my signature).

I'll end buying your album (in cd format) when I'm out of this financial issues I'm having right now.

I just listened to Trample on Me (I actually plan on buying your album off Itunes once I have some dough to throw around), and I was wondering if  you've contemplated the usage of growls or yells in any of your music? It just seems that your musical style opens up a lot of different vocal options in some of your songs, and I really think that the addition of some Arkfeldt-esque growls might add an extra dimension to your music. Many times it seems like a song is about to explode into a kind of Extreme Metal frenzy but immediately calms down. That's just my 2 cents

Thanks a lot for your interest!!

To be honest, I don't really know where I'm going LOL I mean that it's not planned... I listen to a lot of music, including extreme music and I really like to add various elements from different styles, it can happen...

Did you listen to http://spleenarcana.bandcamp.com/track/a-picture-of-two-lovers-in-the-mist - A Picture Of Two Lovers In The Mist ? I would be curious to know if what happens at the middle of the song is a bit like what you are talking about?

Yea, after listening to your myspace, it seems that "A Picture Of Two Lovers In The Mist" and "Trample On Me" have a lot of room for innovation. But I mean don't really take my words too seriously, I'm not exactly a musical genius and your creative capacities are most likely far greater than mine.

Hi everyone!

Some news about the recording process... which goes pretty well these days! I'm working on vocals and I'm nearly done! Less vocals parts and more instrumental moments on this album actually Wink
More vintage keyboards and fuzz bass as well LOL

I still need to find a title and the artwork for the album but I already have some ideas.

By the way my first album is available for 1€ until Sunday in my store (or for free by joining the mailing list!) :  http://spleenarcana.bandcamp.com/album/the-field-where-she-died" rel="nofollow - http://spleenarcana.bandcamp.com/album/the-field-where-she-died

Hi Proggers! Wink

A quick note to share with you Spleen Arcana's Patreon page here :  http://www.patreon.com/spleenarcana" rel="nofollow - http://www.patreon.com/spleenarcana

Patreon is a new and exciting project that allow independent musicians to release their music on a regular basis and fans to support them! It's a bit like Kickstarter but for lighter regular projects like songs... Hope you'll enjoy the concept and the new music to come! The first song I'll release on Patreon will be a song from the upcoming Spleen Arcana's second album. Thanks Wink

Just chiming in on this album...

I know it's hard to get our independent productions to be heard..and then it's even a gift if anyone listens more than once and really gets the music....

So far I have three on that list...JHimm, Salt in Spirit, and Spleen A.

This album is very good. I have listened to it all every day for over a week...I get that same craving to hear it as I do a Transatlantic or Flower kings album....that's a good sign to me.

The songs are epic. Well played and wonderfully arranged. Great retro prog honoring of classic sounds...trons, moogs, ARPs, rickenbacer(sounding) bass....etc...juicy stuff.
Special note to use of the mellotron....just amazing...my favorite aspect of this album.

The long epic Memento...never loses me...I look forward to each transition and part. Which is the key to pulling off an epic long song...maintaining interest...Spleen does.

Genesis, King C, Pink F, Yes...all flavors included...but never copied.

I really dig this album.. Buying it. Support the cause!!

Peace
The fisher king
