Hello.

At the moment I'm privately working on a lil project: I wanna put together a playlist of songs that
rebuilds the history of the earth and of mankind (in chronological order of course).
In other words: I am collecting Songs that relate or about actual historical events.
I think this would be a very interesting and enjoyable (and long) list to listen to.
As this requires a lot of prog-songs I would like to ask for your help!
Any suggestion is highly appreciated. Please post any song you think will contribute to the list.
Below you find my list as far as I have come.
Feel free to send me stuff or suggest even your own music.
If you are interested in any of the songs below, please contact me.

The History List:

"Darkness" - Van der Graaf Generator
"Licht in das Dunkel" - Stern Combo Meissen
"The Prophet's Song" - Queen
"Watcher of the Skies" - Genesis
"Jacob's Ladder" - Rush
"After the Flood" - Van der Graaf Generator
"Pompei" - Peter Hammill
"Jerusalem" - Emerson Lake & Palmer
"The Prophet" - Yes
"Jesus" - Queen
"Time Table" - Genesis
"Die Sage" - Stern Combo Meissen
"Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" - Genesis
"White Man" - Queen
"Albatross" - Karat
"Turn of the Century" - Yes
"Der Kampf um den Südpol" - Stern Combo Meissen
"Driving the Last Spike" - Genesis
"The Inventor's Dream" - McDonalds & Giles
"'39" - Queen
"The Emperor in His War Room" - Van der Graaf Generator"
"The Gates of Delirium" - Yes
"South Side of the Sky" - Yes
("America" - Yes)
"Future Times" - Yes
"Don't Kill the Whale" - Yes
"Cage" - King Crimson
"Living Forever" - Genesis
"21st Century Schizoid Man" - King Crimson
"Livin' On the Edge" - Aerosmith
"Innuendo" - Queen
"Watcher of the Skies" - Steve Hackett

to be continued... ;)

Please send me further suggestions. they don't have to be all prog, but neither they have to be all metal stuff ;)

Chain - Reconstruct.  The whole album is the story of man coming up from the goo all the way up until today.  That ought to cover you.

And Henning Pauly is from Germany as well.

I would check out some Iced Earth and Iron Maiden.  Both have numerous songs dealing with historical ideas.  In regards to Chain's Reconstruct, I have been listening to that album often as background music.  I must find the time to listen closer in order to catch on the concept.

As Rushfan said, Maiden do quite a lot in this area

Invaders & Run to the Hills - about colonialism
The Trooper - Crimean War (loosely based on Charge of the Light Brigade by Tennyson)
Aces High - Fighter/Air Combat in WW2
Powerslave - About Egyptian Pharoahs
Alexander the Great - Pretty Obvious
Montsegur - Catholic Troops vs Cathars
Paschendale - WWI Battle of Passchendaele
The Longest Day - Dday WWII

Road to Moscow - Al Stewart  (German invasion of Russia in WWII)
Baba  O'riley - The Who - (Vietnam War , you could probably find tons of songs on this subject)
Tales of Brave Ulysses - Cream  ( I can hear the groaning from here... )
Cheyenne Anthem - Kansas  (White man take over of the American West)
Panic in Detroit  - David Bowie (Detroit Race Riots in 68)
The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald  Gordon Lightfoot (Freighter sinking in the Great Lakes)
CSN - Ohio - (Kent State shootings)
Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song  (Viking raiding song)
Midnight Rambler - Rolling Stones (Boston Strangler)

It depends if your looking for songs about historical events, or people of locations, and on what scale.

Crap. I just notice the requirement that they be Prog songs. So my update list would be:

Cheyenne Anthem - Kansas  (White man take over of the American West)
Road to Moscow - Al Stewart  (German invasion of Russia in WWII)
Baba  O'riley - The Who - (Vietnam War , you could probably find tons of songs on this subject)
Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song  (Viking raiding song)

Bonzo Goes To Bitburg by the Ramones is about "President" Reagan degrading the memory of Holocaust victims and American war heroes by visiting a Nazi cemetary.
