Subject: Why do topics get closed ?

I don`t know why some people take it upon themselves to play god and just step in and say " OK I`ve had enough of this " I`m not just refering to some of my threads which may have struck some nerves in some people that have been shot down over the years but this morning I spent a few minutes of my time responding to a thread which contained issues that I consider to be important to the very survival of music itself and then poof ! it`s gone. I`m refering to the "help us fight piracy thread". Wouldn`t it be better to offer some reasoning or logic or be a little more diplomatic about it. I was going to contribute another review today but now I can`t because of time lost and frustration.

Almost all the times, admins specify why the thread is closed.

Regarding that "help against piracy" thread, I think it was an invitation to register and sign a petition somewhere, which had the tendency to turn into a discussion/debate about music pirating.

We do try to avoid closing threads, preferring where possible to get them back on track. Some subjects though become just too difficult to control. People ignore the site rules and either attack other members, countries, religions etc., or promote some sort of illegal activity. These tend to be the main subjects which result in thread closures.

In the case of the thread you mention Vibe, the illegal activity brigade once again decided that boasting of their activities was more important than complying with the rules. There are a number of posts which have been hidden in it.

Bottom line is, don't blame the admin team for the closures, blame those who compel us to do it.

OK . But I wrote something in support of the guy trying to make a living playing music and by the time I hit the post reply button the thread was "plutoed". I was going AGAINST the illegall activity brigade.

I swear after that I would have had something serious to say.

I understand the reasoning behind closing such threads - but in the case of illegal downloading it may be better to hide offensive posts than to close the thread. Of course the quoting mechanism is a problem here ... in the end you (Vibrationbaby) have the right to feel bad because a thread you started with the best intention is closed, but you also have to understand that the admins feel responsible for upholding certain standards, but at the same time they may be busy with real life activities and sometimes closing a thread can be the only solution for the time being.

I want discussions to continue wherever they go, unless the creator has a problem with it.

I felt compelled to engage the people who refuse to even accept the possible upsides to (currently illegal) downloading.

It's true that sometimes people might feel like they have no other choice than downloading an album, for example if they live in a country where music is not as readily available as it is in most western countries. But this is as far as I will go ... and especially for people who live in the U.S., Canada, England or Germany there is no excuse for not using Napster IMHO.

But let's continue this discussion in the other thread, if at all possible.Embarrassed

The illegal downloading issue is a very sensitive one Stonie. The site itself cannot be seen as promoting it in any way. So, best to play it safe.

No one plays God here...

Many threads are closed for further discussion among the Admins and forum members and in some cases they were re-opened.

Quotes and direct responses to a hidden post generally spoil greatly a thread and then it's almost impossible to let it roll.

Anyway, the forum used (Get The Word Out) sounded as an invitation to join the sites and continue the discussion there; IMO the message was addressed.

It's not about refusing to accept future possibilites.  It's fine to discuss the future!.  The industry is going to change as you guys pointed out, fine.  Nevertheless, until the new system is in place and operation, stealing is stealing, and justitications for it are not relevent.  None of us get to make up the laws as we think they should be in our perfect world.   That's all I'm saying.  Cheers!

Wow ! Someone got it ! I `m using somewhat figuratively here but just out of interest here`s where I got it. Back in the 1940s the US atmospheric environmental services started flying into eyes of hurricaines for research purposes. Well, the air in the eye of the hurricaine is very stable the tricky part in those days was entering into that area. One of the first aircraft used for these purposes were ex USAF B-25 medium-bombers which were converted into crude research platforms. This guy was the navigator aboard the first of these aircraft to penetrate a Hurricaines eye, and this was one of his first comments to the media after the flight. For some reason it has stuck in my head for years and I apply it to various situations when appropriate.

Mike pointed out something that I feel the need to re-iterate.

When people quote offensive posts it makes it very hard to just delete the offensive posts and still make the thread coherent, because their posts have to be deleted too.

Wha t the heck is so offensive about explaining my signature ? I don`t know about this site anymore. Really. It`s a bloody personal expression I`ve been using for years in a humourous fashion and a lot of my friends and collegues get a kick out of it when I explain it.  You guys have to take some happy pills. This is why I`m losing interest in the forums.

pssh... who does THAT anymore??

i remember there was a topic about drugs a while back, and the original intent of the topic was not to promote drug use, but it turned out like that anyway, with people saying they do this or that drug or whatever while listening to prog, i dont remember. the point is is that when discussing a controversial subject such as illegal downloading or drugs, it's bound to get out of hand. and from what ive seen, controversial subjects on this forum are always under the careful and watchful eyes of the admins, so watch yo'self! I thought that it was weird that you would interpret the post as offensive because it did come off to me  as if you were talking about my post. The way some people express themselves and interpret things through this medium of communication can become somewhat distorted and misinterpreted at times as opposed to conventional verbal methods. I grew up in the mid-sixteenth century when we didn`t even have telephones. So I do understand that misunderstandings do occur.

Some people seem to get a kick out of challenging anything they perceive as "authority".

The simple fact here is that the admin team are ordinary members like the rest, who have simply offered to give up some of their time helping the site to flourish. (And flourish it continues to do.)

No one is "playing God" here or even on an ego trip. We have a set of rules which were drawn up some time ago and agreed by the collaborators. All the admin team do is implement these rules.

We are actually very accommodating. We close or hide very few posts or threads. Sometimes though, members will decide that what they have to say is more important than sticking to the rules. They will therefore promote illegal activities, be abusive to other members/ cultures/ tastes etc., or use the forum for other selfish ends.

There are 2 reasons why we have to curtail such activity though.
 - Like it or not, we are a part of the music industry. If the industry perceive us as working against them (by encouraging illegal downloading for example), we will lose their support and cooperation, and risk being closed down.
- All our members have the right to participate in the forum without fear of intimidation, abuse or personal attack

We make no apologies to those who believe their right of free speech over-rides all this. The site will prevail for the benefit of all, not just the selfish few.

I don`t get it. I was OPPOSING illegal downloading. I always have opposed downloading of any sort from anywhere. I might have said in one thread " Keep on Downloadin`" but it was meant in a very sarcastic manner because I was attempting to emphasize the damage downloading is causing to the music industry. Maybe we should have a little  emoticon indicating Sarcasm. I don`t know.

If I can explain the thread about Hogarth's mom passing away now that it's closed. I just figured it was newsworthy and I meant no disrespect. I just wanted to pass along the sad news.

Had a lot of adjectives tossed about it, but being somebody who has lost a parent (my father 5 years ago), I know EXACTLY how it feels and how much it hurts (and how that hurt hasn't gone away). Don't think for a minute that I didn't know. There have been a lot of condolences sent H's way on the Marillion forum and thought the same could be done here.

Maybe it wouldn't have come off as insincere had it been left in the prog news section, where I originally opened it before it was moved.

I'll think twice next time.

E-dub, I was very careful in my post. I did not doubt your sincerity, nor did I "toss about" adjectives carelessly or hurtfully. I thought that the topic was setting a troubling precedent -- basically asking us to mourn for the relation of a musician, not (as we often see) for a deceased musician, with whom we might logically have felt some connection.

Essentially, what occurred was the death of a stranger, and of a senior citizen at that. If death via aging and the normal passing of time is truly tragic, then life itself is tragic, as we are all fated to die (the best we can hope for is that our passing is due to old age), and perhaps, therefore, we should always be condoling each other on our mortality.

I was wondering where we draw the line: the parent of a musician, the child of a musician, the sibling, uncle, aunt, grandparent, friend, roadie or manager?

Strangers are dying all around us, every minute of every day. Just a few days ago, some seventy were horrifically slaughtered in Baghdad, blown to pieces when terrorists used two mentally disabled women, with remotely-detonated explosive jackets, to wander into crowds of people at markets, people who were only seeking the necessities of life. None of those people got to die as a result of reaching old age, nor did we mourn their tragic, untimely passing here.

How can we write that the death of one elderly woman is "very sad, " and that she was "one of the good ones" if we did not know her? As we are not moved to tears by the passing of every elderly person, or every nameless, faceless (to us) child who starves or dies of disease in some war-torn country, why should the passing of the relations of celebrities be different, or news-worthy?

Should we have a thread asking who here among us has been touched by death in the family, or among friends (you and I have), and have everyone here feel they have to express sympathy for everyone else (or else risk appearing uncaring)? Though we "know" each other better (I'll wager) than we "knew" Hogarth's mother, would that be appropriate, and would the automatic condolences of people we've never met really ring true?

ErmmI don't know -- I understand where you're coming from on this, but I think a Marillion forum would have been a more fitting place for those posts, and I thought such a thread here set a troubling precedent. I don't think I was alone in feeling that way; there was a relative lack of response to the thread.

I'm sorry if my comments on this matter, then or now, cause you any pain -- that was not my aim.  I just thought the topic misplaced here, not truly tragic (again, unless ANY death is tragic), could lead to an endless parade of such threads (all musicians & members have parents & families), and that people should not feel compelled to fall into line to express express what might be less than entirely genuine sadness at the passing of every stranger. (I think that veers upon insincerity, and poor taste. As I said, we don't attend the funerals of total strangers, nor would we be welcome there.)

Hug Sorry.

As far as I'm concerned, this issue is closed. Everybody had an opportunity to voice their opinion, and I thought I was well within my rights to do the same. It's all a matter of opinion, as Hogarth is somebody with whom I hold the utmost respect and I found it relevant to pass it along.

All good on this end.

I`ve  got this workopolis crap popping up on my screen as well. The invasion has commenced. It`s time to release the dogs. The world needs purification. This reliance  on computers has gone too far.

Now, I for one am mortified at the termination of the ol' 'Kiss of Death' thread which seems to have outlived it's use by date without even as much as a death notice - [i.e. a reason, in funereal speak].

The fact that the thread may well have been slowly suffocating under the weight of it's own morbidity seems largely irrelevant to where i'm sitting, here on the unsalubrious side of the Styx .

I guess the arrow through the heart from my point of view, is that it was so unceremoniously delivered without mine being the last post which, I might say, gives this thread new hope and, if you like, a kind of renaissance in a not of this worldly kind of way .

So, in conclusion.......I hope I make myself perfectly clear .

Now, which way to the wake?

Workopolis - is that ad-related? If so, please report it in the bugs section, this might be another one for M@X to look into.

Otherwise, have you checked for Dementors? Wink
