Usually I'm chastised for not like hardcore avant garde and rio acts like: Henry cow, Samla, John Zorn, and some Zappa, but rescently I have found myself adoring the realm of avant metal. In my post rock.metal thread I found myself bragging about too many avant bands, so I decided on making a well deserved thread.

So far in my collection I have:
MotW (barely avant, but great introduction band)
Kayo Dot
SGM
Unexpect

I hope to have this list grow a lot more, though Kayo Dot was a bit too ambient weird for me.

One has not much to with the other in this case.

Anyway, have you tried Solefald? They're in PA, check them out.

Assaf listed some good bands but I really need to second his Kekal suggestion.Their Acidity and The Habit of Fire albums are awesome.

I was recently contacted by Kekal mastermind Jeff Arwadi,he sent me a promo of THoF and also wants me to interview him.Damn nice guy too.

Kayo Dot took a while for me to get into, you sort of have to be in the mood for it

I was wondering if there were any avant-metal bands that keep the METAL aspect in tact, like UneXpect? I LOVE Sleepytime, but they use metal more as a tool to combine with other styles (read: avant-garde) more than as a playing style.

edit: also no Ephel Duath, I know of them/Painter's Pallette is pretty good but haven't listened to in a while

Ephel Duath is one of the more challenging bands i have listened to. I dont like their screaming style but the clean vocals are nice when used. strange mix of heavy jazz with hardcore styles.  not much in common with the bands you've heard, Ian, at least from my perspective. id try out  some of the bands assaf listed, though im not as up to date as id like and havnt heard a few of them. (must check out Kekal)

Avant metal, whether it be pseudo avant metal or real avant metal (Don't ask me for the difference) is some of my favorite musical styles, period.  So much good stuff in the genre, really, the ferocity and technicality combined with the experimental and unique sounds of the avant garde.

Good stuff.

Thanks for the links, Assaf.

BIG nod towards this band. A minority of people probably noticed from my 'location' and 'sig' I'm a massive fan. I would suggest starting with their album Omnio. Very emotionally power music. Sadly they are mostly unknown here and everywhere.

How strange anyone hasn't mentioned Arcturus, maybe many people had listened to them, but if not, give them a try, and get The Sham Mirrors. Also, should Devil Doll count as Avant-Garde Metal?, they are here in the archives, but under the categorization of Heavy Prog, and I consider them to be much more than only Heavy Prog.

I saw your location days after you changed it.Wink

I'll have to think Ivan (Trickster) for showing me this band as well as a couple others that I now highly enjoy.

I haven't heard much of this genre, but I'm on it.  I've still yet to listen to Unexpected and Ephel Duath, but I'll try to prioritize this.

Kudos to Negura Bunget and their stunning 2002 album. Thumbs%20Up

The Sham Mirrors is a tad cheesy but the vocals and keyboards are epic

Seriously.  Pure classy metal. I suggest starting with   "The Painter's Palette"   It is crutial to enjoy crazy up tempo & jazzy style playing to enjoy it though. ../album.asp?id=9323 -

I enjoy listening to Mike Patton's projects, especially Mr Bungle and Faith No More (not the most avant-garde but still, Mike Patton)

Arcturus are awesome too, and there's a band from the Netherlands called Freak Neil Inc, also, great avant garde metal.
I can't really get into "over-psycho" bands like Naked City, or other projects of John Zorn. it's way too much crazy.

if something's annoying with them take it as tongue in cheek because thats basically how they are

Any discussion involving Mike Patton and metal has to include a nod to his incredible collaboration EP with the Dillinger Escape Plan - "Irony Is A Dead Scene". That stuff is insane ... chaotic, violent, and bizarre. The track "When Good Dogs Do Bad Things" is intensely awesome.

If you haven't given them a try yet, Secret Chiefs 3!

Trey Spruance does a wicked job with these albums, that still have the genre-hopping of Mr. Bungle just focused more around arabic type music (they also sound a lot like estradasphere off your list there).

Also, try John Zorn's stuff (starting with Naked City, which is downright jaw-dropping)

There ya go!

Their new album Embodiment (to be released on 19/2 through The End Records) is spectacular!

Their earlier releases are also highly recommended.

I will be doing an interview with Don Anderson from the band (and form Agalloch and Especially Likely Sloth) for another website soon but I'll post it in PA as well.
If all goes well, I'll announce another interview for another band soon.

I think they were approved for the PMT and are waiting to be added (if I recall correctly, but anyway, it's in their chart at http://www.ratingfreak.com - www.ratingfreak.com )

By the way, I have completed an interview with Don Anderson regarding his new Sculptured album, Embodiment which is spectacular (see my review). I did the interview for the Sonic Frontiers Website and I'll post a link to it when it's published.
