In a thread recently started in the Prog Lounge, the issue of the Key 20 album list for every subgenre was raised once again. At present, those lists are exclusively based on the average rating for each of the albums included in the subgenre - those that have the highest score are labelled as the sub's "key albums". However, this inevitably results in only the best-known, most widely available albums gaining visibility, and other, often more relevant albums being ignored just because they have fewer ratings.

Personally, I think those lists should be compiled by genre teams members instead. Obviously, they would be influenced by individual tastes, therefore be less objective - on the other hand, they would give lesser-known acts a bigger chance of exposure.

Clap The two lists could run concurrently.

Another option would be to add a "recommended" list into the subgenre definition, but the links would have to be added manually.

Yet another option would be to compile the new list from the ratings submitted by the genre team members.Smile

Clap I would be very happy to see this happen. In the past I have talk with my team members 'bout the skewed nature of our charts, so I would be interested in having a little more input into these lists.

That would be one way to force encourage the non-reviewers among us to review more albums in our own subs Tongue

just to make this clear: I did not raise the issue because I am particularly fond of "Sea Shanties" (although I am; just look at my review of it), but because I think that it is a key album in the historic sense of the word. just like Amon Düül's album "Psychedelic Underground" is THE key album for Krautrock, although musically I would give it 2 stars at the most, if not only 1 even. but it is of immense historic importance and hence a key album; it can't be overrated in that aspect

I don't know. As a matter between specialists, it would be more effective for the members to group and decide a number of very referential albums, then each to name their 20 favorites from the genre - and that compilation to create a top list.

I agree with your idea, when i was new to the forums, i always looked for the key albums in order to explore deeper the sub-genres i was more interested, we could have both features, the 20 most popular (or better known albums whatever you want to call it), and the 20 collaborators albums/recommendations.

exactly... best of both worlds... for the people looking for the comonplace stuff.. and those who want to understand ..not just listen... to the paricular sub-genres.

this is exactly my position. Key albums aren't always the most popular or well - liked. i am all for the collab's picks and then what we have now. great idea!   ClapClap

I like this.  It maintains the democratic process, but it also allows users to easily see a "starter kit" list assembled by the experts.  Plus, it makes me feel powerful Cool
