Ok, I will be quick. I play guitar about 4-5 years, and I really enjoy it. But, keyboards walked in my life about 1-2 years also... Day to day, practicing, I learnt to play them too, and about 1 month ago, I was totally on keyboards, ignoring guitar (playing it only 1 time per week)...... I'm undecited. What do you recommend me to do? It's a very confusiong period... When I listen to guitar maestros, I say: "well, yes, guitar is my life!"... But, when I listen to some keyboard maestros, or simply, when I listen to progressive electronic, somehow it turns on me that I am born for keyboards... I must admit that I love synth "pads" more than guitar "power chords"... The third choice is guitar + keyboards. But this is hard, I mean, when you want to perfection them... Ok, roll the bones! |

Follow your heart.... there's no point in listening to us, or to any of your 'heroes'. If you feel like going for the keyboards do it. I play guitar (self taught) since I was 15, started piano lessons 10 years ago, but always wanted to play bass. I picked up on that wish a year ago, and learned more in the area of bass playing in 11 months than I did about piano in 2 years... Guitar. It's ultimately more expressive than keyboards IMHO.

Maybe the question is, do you want perfection? What do you want to play? Where do you want to play? if you need a high level of skills in answering these questions, probably you should have to decide for one, and take courses, etc.
If don't, just play both. Just like me. ------------- P |

| Keyboards are fewer than guitarists, so it's easier to stand out if you are really good. The world is full of great guitarists. eventhough keyboards aren't THAT rare. Anyway, I'd do both if I had money for a keyboard. |

I personally think you will benefit greatly from learning both instruments. Look at Tony Mcalpine, he is a virtuoso on both electric guitar and keyboard (not to mention he learned violin in his youth as well). I myself are an avid guitar player, but get me on the bass guitar (i don't even own one yet) and im still better than many my age at bass. But if you were to do both, a good practice schedule is the only way to go, unlike learning one instrument in which sometimes you can get away with having hap-hazard practice sessions and still improve. -------------

depends if you really want to be exceptional at an instrument, or just well-versed for the purpose of writing songs. personally I dislike guitars and feel like I've progressed as far as I can on the keyboard without getting *serious* about it so next I'm going to get me some tuned percussion and beat the sh*t out of it all

I have this problem too, except it is the opposite instruments. I practice guitar when I am feeling confident and patient, and I practice piano every other spare moment I have. But please, do both. -------------

I voted for guitar, mainly because I love it (I do play both though). Like some others have said, it's really up to you. I like what MikeEnRegalia said about the guitar being more expressive, although I feel that's more for classical and acoustic guitar than the power chords on electric guitars. A distorted guitar can still be a beautiful thing though. |

Guitar VS Keyboards?I think you can do more damage to a keyboard with a guitar than to a guitar with a keyboard. Seriously though, I like them both. ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

being a keyboardist, i'm somewhat biased. however, like someone mentioned before, keyboardists are fewer, so it is more likely if you ever seek to form a band that they will require a keyboardist. also, us keyboardists get the honour of complaining about the stereotypical guitarist, you know when you go into guitar center and all you hear is smoke on the water and enter sandman. that and from previous bands i've been in, guitarists are the only ones i've ever had trouble with, since they just constantly wanted to solo. sorry if i'm turning this into a rant about how most guitarists annoy me, it's just that they think they are cool because they know a couple power chords and that impresses people more for some reason. i honestly think that if you have the ability, you should go for both, though it'll require discipline. personally, i've learned several instruments but i've taken the easy road and they've all related to piano thus far (organ, melodica, accordion, marimba, glockenspiel, vibrophone, etc.). though i'm still better at piano, those all came relatively naturally, and now i'm trying to learn bass and having trouble, it just doesn't feel natural. like a lot of people, you should do what feels best. playing multiple instruments will give you a versatility that could help you out very much, much like geddy lee. |
