Well, i'm "new" in this thing of Prog Rock
I only know the basics: PF, DT, PT, KC, ELP, Genesis, Transatlantic, Rush, Sun Caged, Yes, Tool, LTE, Symphony X etc. I'd like to know, what bands do you recomend to start listening something different I also like Jazz (the one that only uses iano, drums and bass, I don't remember the name) well, thanks anticipated for your help |

2.- Gothic Impressions by Par Lindh Project
3.- Live at Carnegie Hall by Renaissance
4.- Hamburger Concerto by Focus
5.- Illusions on a Double Dimple by Triumvirat
For Jazz related try Aurora or Mystical Adventures by Jean Luc Ponty

Triumvirat - Spartacus (ELP-ish symphonic prog, but with their own typical style)
Eloy - Inside, Ocean, Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes (Psychedelic/Space rock with a touch of symphonic elements)
Soft Machine - Third, Fourth, Fifth (Free-form Jazz/fusion. Third also includes canterbury flavours)
Caravan - If i could do it all over again, i'd do it all over you (Excellent Canterbury, nothing more)
Fläsket Brinner - Fläsket (Colorful and intresting Jazz-rock/Fusion with hints of classic rock'n'roll)
Kebnekaise - II (Very good mix of Hard rock, Progressive rock & Swedish folk music)
Gnidrolog - Lady Lake (Like a crossover of Jethro Tull & Van Der Graaf Generator, but with their own style. Excellent!)
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire, Visions of the Emerald Beyond (Brilliant, mindblowing Jazz-rock/Fusion with violin)
Brand X - Unorthodox Behaviour, Morrocan Roll (Brilliant, mindblowing Jazz-rock/Fusion, but lacks the colorfulness of other Fusion bands)
Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior (Excellent, Colorful, almost over-the-top Jazz-rock/Fusion)
That'll keep you busy for a while!

The "basics" are strictly the originators: King Crimson, Yes, Gentle Giant, Genesis, Van Der Graaf Generator, Pink Floyd (once they got through their long psychedelic period), Soft Machine. You might add Renaissance (their first album released about the same time as Krimson's ITCOCK), and the Moody Blues. Apart from the relative obscure bands of the late 60's/early 70's, others followed on and are often derivative. (Modern?) "jazz piano, drum bass", suggests EST aka Esbjorn Svensen Trio - with whom you can hardly go wrong from over a decade of releases : try the award winning Good Morning Susie Soho. Then Brad Mehldau (especially the studio album with Nick Drake and Lennon& McCartney interpretations) - but I really find his work with Pat Metheny dry and non-memorable. The Bad Plus which will be pushing you further with their own compositions and tougher takes on Abba etc. . But you could check out some of the influential work of the Dave Brubeck Quartet of the 60's e.g. Time Out and Live At Carnegie Hall. ------------- The best eclectic music on the Web,8-11pm BST/GMT THURS. if you have already listened to a complete album from all of those bands you listed, then you are not that much new to prog rock, but still there's a wonderfull universe out there waiting for you, try to expand your tastes also beyond the jazz oriented prog and go folk and classical, my recomendation is harmonium's five seasons ------------- Santiago |

Gnidrolog, Änglagård and Focus are great to go further with, and essential for any prog fan. If you want even more challenging stuff you could try some Frank Zappa or Mike Keneally. Oh, and Samla Mammas Manna as well. A very playful Jazz-Rock/RIO band from Sweden that released some incredible albums during the early 70's. Accessible enough for everyone to give a try, their albums Måltid and Klossa Knapitatet preferably. For prog-metal, Fates Warning, Zero Hour and Shadow Gallery are highly recommended if you like Dream Theater. All being excellent bands both technically and musically. For Jazz-Rock, Brand X, Return to Forever and Kenso are my favorites. The latter two being the most melodic and accessible ones. Incredible stuff!

Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, U.K., Gentle Giant... Then get into some jazz fusion; Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Weather Report, Miles Davis (his pre-fusion stuff too) etc. Listen to this composer called Stravinsky too; amazing.
This is all over the place I know, but listen to these bands and your musical taste will be expanded trust me. Seriously get into jazz and classical in general too if you haven't. Oh, and Frank Zappa. |
