As a Finn I'm very interested in knowing if you recognize any of these Finnish prog 'giants'.
Which is your favourite Finnish prog band? I guess most of you have at least heard of Wigwam!
Some of these can be considered as jazz/fusion as well, but nevermind.
I'll probably vote for Kingston Wall. They rock!

I'm on a vacation in Helsinki, and just bought Tasavallan Presidentti's second album, and am now listening to Kingston Wall at my friend's house. I'll try to acquire Alamaailman Vasarat, Finnforest, Tabula Rasa and Haikara albums later this week.

The only one I really know among these is Wigwam, which is pretty awesome, but I'm waiting until the end of the week until I cast my vote.

You forgot one great finnish band, Höyry-Kone. But my vote goes for Wigwam (What a surprise) though I think Kingston Wall, Haikara, Tasavallan Presidentti and Alamaailman Vasarat are also great.

By the way, sad news for the fans of Haikara. Their singer, composer, guitar player Vesa Lattunen died a couple of weeks ago at the age of 55.

Oh dear Lord, Nightwish got a vote! I consciously left them out of this poll. My only concern now is whether the person who voted for Nightwish has even heard any real Finnish prog bands, because they're all so much better!

I never heard any of those bands...

Any particular one worth getting into??

Nightwish get my vote too! They are not that well known in my part of the world - but they do have a following. I have seen them compared to that other band (Evernescence). Tarja is by far the best female vocalist in prog metal. I would love to see them live...

What recommendations for a similar Finnish band?

It depends on what kind of prog you like. Wigwam, Tasavallan Presidentti, Haikara, Alamaailman Vasarat are "fusion" bands. If you're into jazzy prog you might wanna try Wigwam's "Fairyport" or "Being", Haikara's first album (might be a tough one to find though), or Tasavallan Presidentti's "Lambertland". If you're a Frank Zappa fan you should try Pekka Pohjola, Hidria Spacefolk is quite similar to Ozric Tentacles, Kingston Wall is basically a mix between Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin..And so on. I think they all worth getting .

My vote went for Haikara. Sad News for Lattunen.

Yes Hoyry Kone is missing and so is Uzva.

Wigwam and Tasallavan Presidentii are the earliest and more meaningful Finish band.

Oh yeah, Uzva is also missing. Sean, you were wondering in your Uzva - Niittoaika review what was the connection between Uzva and Hoyry-Kone. Hoyry-Kone's Marko Manninen played cello on Uzva's first album "Tammikuinen Tammela". I believe that's the connection.

Yes, Tarja is a great singer.(I prefer Heather Findlay from Mostly Autumn though ) That's one positive thing I can say about Nightwish.
There is a whole bunch of that kind of metal bands in Finland, such as Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica. Try them if you're into that kind of stuff, although both have a male vocalist. (Not that you can always tell that )

Alamaailman Vasarat gets my vote - Whenever I listen to them I always end up grinning from ear to ear.

Admittedly I've only heard Fairyport, but I can't quite see all the fuss about Wigwam on the strength of it. To me they seem to play somewhat Colosseum-esque bluesy jams and sub-standard Zappa ripoffs... Am I missing something?

Alamaailman : Their second album has got tremendous moments where they sound like acoustic death-prog-metal.

Actually , both Fairyport and Being are quite nice but somewhat over-rated (there are some Zappa influences no rip-offs) but Nuclear Nightclub is vastly over-rated.

Haikara's first two albums are some of the most original stuff I heard.

Alamaailman's 2nd is definitely their best.

Oh, and from what I've heard of Haikara they're pretty special too, but I'm not familiar enough with their music to really pass judgement.

Haikara's two first albums are definitely worth getting. The only problem is that they are relatively rare. Even I had difficulties finding those two albums and I live in Finland.

Probably Ageness. A neo-prog band that is quite close to Rush and Genesis.

I found an awesome progstore from Helsinki today, provided with the biggest progselection I've ever seen live. Not only finnish, but italian, german and english prog too. Unfortunately my budget it reaching its bottom, and I came out with only Uzva's first album "Tammikuinen Tammela". I see there's no review of it yet, but I'll add one once I get home with a few more listens of this very promising jazz-fusion/prog album.

Eemu, do you remember the name of the progstore and where is it? I live in Helsinki and I would like to know if there's a hidden progstore that I'm not aware of.

I'm sure you know this one, "Keltainen Jäänsärkijä" at Kamppi. It's just that even the most obscure cd store in Sweden doesn't have a tenth of all the prog cd's they had there, so to me it was like heaven

Oh yeah, I know Keltainen Jäänsärkijä. They do have a great collection there!   I should probably visit there. I've been looking for that Uzva's first album myself. Hopefully you didn't pick the last one.. Thanks anyway Eemu!

Hey thanks for that Logos -  I have heard quite a bit of Stratovarius - "Elements" Pt1 gets the odd thrashing - mainly for the title track. I can't say they grab me as much as Nightwish but when the mood strikes, they are great to play LOUD . I am not too familiar with Sonata Arctica but will give them a spin.

What I would love to hear are some Finnish groups who play prog similar to Pink Floyd, ELP, King Crimson (early), Yes - ie: who are influenced by these groups. What do you recommend?

If he did, then try Hippie Shake Records in Hakaniemi. I'm sure they have both Uzva's cd's in stock.

valravennz, you might wanna try Kingston Wall. They made three excellent albums much in the vein of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and they also took inspiration from the East. Höyry-Kone then again made a couple of crazy albums in the 90's. Clearly influenced by King Crimson (Wetton-Bruford-Fripp era and maybe their 80's albums too). But Höyry-Kone were much more than just a KC copycat. They were totally crazy.

EDIT: JCProg thanks

Quote Other: Nightwish.

I like Nightwish, in fact I was blown away when I saw them live two nights ago, but they definitely aren't prog... They're Power Metal/Opera Metal... And that's very little to do with progressive music...

Also I wish they weren't compared to Evernescence... Because the two have nothing in common... It's like calling Linkin Park metal, you just need some reasonable argument to distinguish it clearly as trash...

These guys are not prog but are surely different (at least before they sold out, so I'm told): Amorphis.  Some of you "metalheads" know whom I'm talking about.

They did an album and an ep based on the Kalevala titled "Tales From 1,000 lakes" and "Black Winter day".  They package these together now.   This is some really good stuff, it's like Pink Floyd meets hideous cookie monster vocals meets the cultural influence which is apparent in their music.  Many great cuts, I highly suggest checking it out.  Especially you metal-proggers.

Tasavallan Presidentti, ever since finding Lambertland on vinyl back in 1973 (and I think in  cheapo dumper bin), issued in the Uk by Sonet, that album has remained a firm favourite. The sticker on the front of the cover stating " A tidied up Traffic", was very misleading but having 30 years later got hold of the earlier recording Tasavallan Presidentti I see about where they got their ideas from. Excellent hydrid of blue rock and jazz, superb guitar and sax work of Lambertland - and The Bargain is one of my all time favourite tunes.

Thanks - thats recommendation in itself  BTW I noticed that you saw Nightwish live very recently - was that in Australia?? If so you lucky person! It's just a short step to cross "the ditch" - I would have been one of the first to lineup for a ticket if they had come to NZ

Sorry about the late reply, but yeah it was... Corner Hotel, Melbourne...

Small venue, sold out, the crowd was great, the band loved it... Awesome
show, topped my list... And by the sounds of it they'll be back within a
year or so, thanks to the positive response from Australia... So that'll
probably mean bigger venues, more gigs and maybe even New Zealand
just for you...
