Linkin Park sometimes has decent lyrics, especially their proggier songs in the last album "Hands Held High" and "The Little Things Give You Away"
Nickelback's are generic, AC/DC's are kinda awful (but fun maybe)
Ayreon has some of the most embarrassing and simplest lyrics I heard in prog.

AC/DC all the way, Ayreon lyrics and style of vocals all sound like Lord of the Dorks, even if it is "well done." I don't need that in my life.

Barring THE, Ayreon's lyrics are embarrassingly bad unless one compares it to power metal, then it's high-caliber. AC/DC gets my vote. Sure, all the songs are about sex, but a large number are quite witty. Nickelback and Linkin Park should be firebombed by the government for so many reasons.

I can't help but vote for Arjen, eventhough he isn't the greatest lyricist in prog, I still prefer him to the rest in this list. Which is impressive since he is not writing in his native language.

I forgot to take that into account, but I still can't get behind any album's lyrics other than THE. To be fair, Arjen uses these silly fantasy/space lyrics to really talk about the human condition, so he's not as bad as I made him seem. I just wish he could find better metaphors. Jon Anderson took the out-there analogies to the limits I think.

AC/DC is actually decent, both musically and lyrically. Nice to listen to now and then.
On the day I was born the rain fell down There was trouble brewing in my home town It was the seventh day, I was the seventh son And it scared the hell out of everyone
They said stop, I said go They said fast, I said slow They said yes, I said no I do the bad boy boogie
Being a bad boy ain't that bad I've had me more dirty women than most men ever had All you women come along with me And I'll show you how good a bad boy can be
I said right and they said left I said east and they said west I said up and they said down I do the bad boy boogie all over town
That song rocks!

At least every once in a while they come up with some good lines:
A song about Hurricane Katrina.
Water grey through the windows Up the stairs Chilling rain Like an ocean Everywhere Chorus: Don't want to reach for me do you? I mean nothing to you The Little Things Give You Away And now there will be no mistaking The levees are breaking All you've ever wanted Was someone to truly look up to you And six feet / under water I do
or
With hands held high into a sky so blue as the ocean opens up to swallow you.

As the AC/DC fan I am, Im gonna vote for them. They have some really entertaining lyrics. Linkin Park's first album is OK but never cared about the lyrics, only the music. Same with Nickelback. Ayreon's lyrics tries way too hard

Ayreon's lyrics are a bit silly and embarassing, but the advantage is that people who don't understand english very well can understand the concept which can make quite a difference when you're listening to music.
i've got A friend ( frenchie ) who understood more or less the story and he loves ayreon now.

btw, a new song is titled "E=MC2" It wouldn't surprise me if I hear hair metal singing "The Equation is E Equals MC squared" during the choruses

AC/DC on the strength of their Big Balls. You just know that the music patrol fascists (the same one's who were all over Styx, ELO, The Eagles, etc.) were going insane over the airplay those songs were given.

and "web of Lies" is apparently a online-dating song, with lyrics such as "I've seen your pix, you look so good"

AC/DC, at least when Bon Scott was the singer/lyricist. It's harder to write and deliver that kind of material than you'd think; Bon Scott always sounded convincing and his single entendres blended with the music perfectly. Whitesnake tried a similar formula and just sounded sad and embarassing, as has just about every other pretender to the throne since Bon departed for the great gig in the sky.

I tend to agree. There is really no measuring stick for deciding which band has the better lyrics. Metal styles vary so much that what one may consider good lyrics maybe bad in another. I believe if you want to base this thread on lyrics it should be how well the bands lyrics projects their message. Just my two cents...

holy crap, the lyrics of the new Ayreon album are terrible. If sang with those 'dramatic' and 'operatic' vocals, it will be a tremendous turn off (and a turn on for the ones who love cheesiness)
I got these from a lyrics site:
Web of Lies:
[Simone Simons]:
Dear PX, I feel you are the one
What's your name? Where are you from?
I'm in love, though we never met
Looking for clues, i search the net
Dear PX, I'm waiting for your name
Check every hour, to no avail
Been up all night, couldn't get to sleep
No way out, I'm in too deep
Dear PX, It's been 11 days
I'm kind of lost within the maze
Are you there? Give me but a sign
Are you at home? Are you on-line?
[Phideaux Xavier]:
Dear Simone, I'm sorry for the wait
I've seen your pics, you're looking great
I'm all alone, dying for a date
I think we match, it must be fate
[Simone Simons]:
Dear oh well, I feel you are the one
what's your name? where are you from?
I'm in love, though we never met
Looking for clues, I search the net
This may be our last chance if we want man to survive
A mirror reflection
Show them our world as it dies
Cut through the barrier and do what no one has dared
Let's break the equation
E=MC2!
Oh no :( Those cheesy musical dialogues:
[Anneke & Jorn]:
No need to feel desire
(but I need you with me)
No need to feel so small
(but I need to feel secure)
No need to feel the fire
(but I need to feel free)
No need to feel at all
(but I need to know for sure)
part of "connect the dots"
I checked the web and left it on over night
Downloading all the latest files
Fear, revere, the torrent flows into my lap
And I disconnect
[Chorus:]
We all know no need to remind us
We all know we won't connect the dots
We all know locked away inside us
We are dying for tomorrow
We are living for today
I rushed back home to my family
I got my son a brand new game
No need to cook, I picked up fast food on the way
And it's finger-licking good
Have you seen little Steve today?
Guess he's still up there in his room
But if he comes down to
I'll be right here just staring at the tune
Playing his game
atrocious

Prog poll?
AC/DC have the best lyrics, as they're just fun.
Nickelback are appalling. I cant stand their sound. That singer really gets my back up. They've got this dreadful single out in the UK right now, something about everyone wanting to be a rock star. It's total sh!t. I'm sorry, but it's among the most annoying songs I've heard in the last few years.

In the beginning Back in nineteen fifty-five Man didn't know about a rock 'n' roll show And all that jive The white man had the smoltz The black man had the blues No one knew what they was gonna do But Tchaikovsky had the news He said - "Let there be sound", and there was sound "Let there be light", and there was light "Let there be drums", and there was drums "Let there be guitars", and there was guitars "Let there be rock" And it came to pass That rock 'n' roll was born All across the land every rockin' band Was blowing up a storm And the guitarman got famous The businessman got rich And in every bar there was a super star With a seven year itch There were fifteen million fingers Learning how to play And you could hear the fingers picking And this is what they had to say "Let there be light" "Sound" "Drums" "Guitar" "Let there be rock" One night in a club called `The Shaking Hand' There was a ninety-two decibel rocking band The music was good and the music was loud And the singer turned and he said to the crowd - "Let there be rock"
Ridin' down the highway Goin' to a show Stop in all the by-ways Playin' rock 'n' roll Gettin' robbed Gettin' stoned Gettin' beat up Broken boned Gettin' had Gettin' took I tell you folks It's harder than it looks It's a long way to the top If you wanna rock 'n' roll
If you think it's easy doin' one night stands Try playin' in a rock roll band It's a long way to the top If you wanna rock 'n' roll
Hotel, motel Make you wanna cry Lady do the hard sell Know the reason why Gettin' old Gettin' grey Gettin' ripped off Under-paid Gettin' sold Second hand That's how it goes Playin' in a band It's a long way to the top If you wanna rock 'n' roll
If you wanna be a star of stage and screen Look out it's rough and mean It's a long way to the top If you wanna rock 'n' roll
C'mon - Bon was a genius
------------- The important thing is not to stop questioning.
