From this Decembers Harper's Magazine:
"    The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to three
scientists who contributed to the development of “knock-
out” mice, in which individual genes can be disabled to
replicate the genetic origins of certain human diseases, Re-
searchers repaired nerve damage in mice afflicted with
multiple sclerosis, reversed the effects of Parkinson’s dis-
ease in mice by giving them green tea, and found a way
to treat muscular dystrophy by doubling the muscle mass
of mice. Oncologists created a virus that forces mouse
brain tumors to eat themselves, and immunologists iso-
lated a genetic code for ulcerative colitis after huge num-
bers of their lab mice began dying of bloody diarrhea. Sci-
entists successfully created stem cells from the testicles of
mice but worried that the “very painful” procedure, which
can be used to treat only the subject from whom the
cells are extracted, might encounter resistance in hu-
man males. Researchers used herpes to kill mouse breast
cancer, and other experts warned that women may be able
to catch breast cancer from mice. The Adirondacks were
plagued by mouse poison—resistant mice."
