Very original topicWink

Supper's Ready has always been a favourite, but Magma's Khontark/Khontarkosz and Hhai are creeping up the list.

Kind of random, but what Magma album would you recommend to someone who's never listened to them before?

Attahk

^^Its there cathciest, most accessible album with the original lineup. "The Last Seven Minutes 1970-1977" is perhaps the most catchiest song; only "Kobaia" exceeds it.

However, I advise Kohntarkosz for those looking for the best overview of Magma's sound, its there most consisten album.  Udu Wudu is stunning as well.

Kohntarkosz  is my favorite.

That's a really hard question to answer.

MDK is their classic, but lots of people start there and are totally overwhelmed and hate it, and never really grow into Magma after that bad start. There are safer options if you don't want a bad first impression. Unless you really like avant-garde music (the vocals are really different) and classical music (the compositions are extremely 20th Century Composer-ian), then don't start there.

Their first two albums are very jazzy - if you like jazz, then either one might due. However, their live album (Live/Hhai Khontark - whatever it's called) is full of all their styles (the slow building volcano Zeuhl, the classical and grandiose Zeuhl, the jazzy Zeuhl, and even the spiritually uplifting Zeuhl) - that might also make a good starting place. However, again, I only recommend the Live album to start if you are comfortable with avant-garde music. The vocals are sort of hard to swallow at first. If you can get past that, they are really one of the best bands in the world.

Anyways, let's not get too far off topic.

Way to stand your ground, The T LOL

Since 1970 i've been aware of having a 'favourite song of all time'.

My rule is that a song has to be my favourite for six months before it replaces the previous one.  These songs have been:

1970: Spoonful (Wheels of Fire) - Cream
1973: Suppers Ready - Genesis
1982: Jungleland - Springsteen
1986: Spoonful (Wheels of Fire) - Cream
1991: Always the Way - James Reyne
1999: Refugees - Van Der Graaf Generator
2004: Suppers Ready - Genesis

My Generation (Live at Leeds version) nearly took top spot last year but didn't quite pass the six month rule.

Although it is blues-rock this version of Spoonful has so much structure that it is hard to imagine that they really were just jamming.

I've never quite understood why Echoes is so much more highly-rated than Atom Heart Mother.  I've given Echoes so many listens, especially because of its insistent reputation among Floyd and prog fans, but it remains a 4-star decent epic for me.

From the very first moment I heard Atom Heart I understood that music will not ever get better than this...over a decade later I still believe this.

Others that equal: VdGG - Still Life, Refugees, A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, Pilgrims, almost everything, in fact

Robert Wyatt - every single track on Rock Bottom, but especially the two Little Reds.

There are a lot of songs I like very much, so it is a pretty tough choice for me. "Wassilissa" by Mother Gong from their album "Fairy Tales" perhaps. "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" by VdGG would be a good candidate too. Or Magma's "Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandöh" or "Köhntark". When I am in a certain mood, "Jenseits" by Ash Ra Tempel, "Epsilon in Malaysian Pale" by Edgar Froese or "Velvet Voyage" by Klaus Schulze are good choices too. Let's not forget the fantastic "Master Builder" by Gong. I could go on and on...

Sorry to be so devastatingly predictable, but my favourite band by a long shot is Led Zeppelin and yes, I think their best song is Stairway... and it's kind of prog too.

And a few responses to the choices of others:

Supper's Ready - seems to be a popular choice, but I don't think it's quite "focused" enough to be me favourite prog song (it's 23 minutes long I think, so that's a good enough excuse for me)
The Musical Box - someone said they preferred the Genesis Live version.... they're right.
Dancing With The Moonlit Knight - as good or better than the above two.
Master Builder - damn stright
Jenseits by Ash Ra Tempel - I'm more of a Freak 'n' Roll man myself
Close To The Edge - might just be the best prog song ever, actually.

Yes -  The Gates of Delirium

It's just an absolute roller-coaster, there's nothing like it.  Yes at their freakiest (only matched by "The Ancient on TFTO).  They were best when they were freaky or funky, or both (which I find is the case with Gates).

A close second, however, is Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Part Two.  I just love all that 10/8 stuff; it grooves nicely.

It's a choice between two of my favourite bands of all time:

Starshine/Angel Wine - The Strawbs
Pilgrims - VDGG

Really hard to chose, so i won't waste my time. They both f**king ROCK!!!! You will always find me singing along to at least one of them whilst waiting at the train station

If you ask me for one, I have no problem, if you ask me for 10, then it will take me hours.

Myvote goes for The Musical Box by Genesis.

^you won't hear any arguments from me on that one!

but really there's so many I could chose, it's impossible as many have said.  The Musical Box is great, but you could even look at the same album and The Fountain of Salmacis is equally as good...in order to come up with an answer I'd need to create a ton of categories and pick a favorite from each, and that would take forever...

I'd pick one... if I was still 14 or 15, and writing my bio for my highschool yearbook! Ermm

(Frankly, I find it to be a silly and rather juvenile concept.)

Naming just one leaves out hundreds of varied, equally great songs which have moved me over the years.

I don't view art as a competition -- thus a single band or song cannot "win."

Or have I already said that? Wink

Yes, they're good with Vegemite -- if rather unsubstantial.
