okay, this is going to be tough, i don't think i can do it in any order:

Yes-Close to the Edge, Gates of Delerium
Opeth-Black Rose Immortal
ELP-Tarkus
Dream Theater- A Change of Seasons, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Rush-Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres, 2112
Porcupine Tree-Anesthetize
Symphony X-The Divine Wings of Tragedy

i'm sure in a couple minutes i'll think of something that i wish i had put on there but hadn't, oh well. just out of curiosity, how are we defining epic? is there a minimum length or any other specific qualifications? i just used things that i think of as epics, usually they are over fifteen minutes and tell a story of sorts, which is why i didn't use any bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor or any other band of the sort that has a lot of long songs.

To name a few which are not on the list:

Mother Gong - Wassilissa
Clearlight - Clearlight Symphony Part 1 and 2
Van der Graaf Generator - Meurglys III, the Songwriter's  Guild
Peter Hammill - Flight
Peter Hammill - Incoherence
Mythos - Encylopedia Terra
Yatha Sidhra - A Meditation Mass

The first album of Hatfield and the North could be considered to be one big epic, since it is played as one piece of music. The same is true for the second side of Steve Hillage's "Green" album.

As predicted....the problem is knowing what to drop. I guess I would drop the prog-related/proto epics, though I still love them and add

Plague of Lighthouse Keepers/VdGG
Solar Music Suite-Steve Hillage
Supper's Ready-G-dogs
Love is the Answer-Flower Kings
The Sky Moves Sideways-Porcupine Tree
Nous Sommes du Soleil-Yes

This will be interesting to revisit again in two more months I imagine by that time trying to narrow it to ten will seem pointless.

Someone above talked about how new epics "own" old epics. I am getting into some newer bands, but ultimately they don't seem to have the same depth as the older bands. The reason why (I suspect) is that the first generation of prog bands had such a wealth of influences, different types of jazz and classical, celtic, folk, as well as contemporary rock at a point in time where experimentation was encouraged. The newer bands seem to be getting this all second hand, filtered though Yes and Genesis, ELP and Pink Floyd, etc. Again, some of the newer bands are great, I really enjoy them, but it's hard for me to see how they "own" their predecessors. I understand what it's like to be 17 and think I know everything, but I also know what it's like for my ears to get bigger and bigger. My ears hear a much deeper sound from the first generation of prog greats.

In no particular order:

Mëkanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh - Magma
When performed live as a single piece
De Futura - Magma
Probably the most addictive bass line ever
Supper's Ready - Genesis
    Really resonating epic
The Way Up - Pat Metheny
Sure it's split into three movement + the opening, but it's one song to me
A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers - Van Der Graaf Generator
    Somehow touches me really personally
Köhntarkösz - Magma
The most atmospheric piece of music I've ever heard
K.A - Magma
Extremely dynamic and varied - again, a single song in three movements
Sista Somrar - Änglagård
Somehow the gorgeous melodies, the sudden and exhilarating dynamic shifts, the monstrously epic rhythmic patterns all linger with me

Any other Yes fans find The Gates of Delirium to be noisy and annoying more than anything else?  I find that song to be grossly overrated around here.

Anyhoo...I think The Dark Side of the Moon has to be #1... it was originally conceived as a complete piece called "Eclipse: a piece for assorted lunatics", and almost always played in it's entirety live by Floyd, Waters, and a lot of Pink Floyd cover bands.

it is noisy, very noisy, but that's exactly why it is a lot better than "Close to the Edge", which is too tame for my taste. I find "Close to the Edge" to be a lot overrated here

I wouldn't say "overrated" because like many on PA I think the use of this word if extremely overrated.  However, I agree with you regarding the Gates of Delerium as being too noisy.  Relayer is the one album from Yes that I have a hard time listening to.  I mentioned this in another recent thread regarding Relayer specifically, it is either the sound of Steve Howe's steel guitar or the sound of Patrick Moraz on keys but I strongly dislike whatever it is that is making the irritating sound throughout the entire song and it does come across to me as more noise than music.

This being said, I don't dislike the album or song, and I try to listen to it as often as I listen to their other albums, but it is definitely a more difficult listen for me.

Couldn't disagree more. An epic is (just my opinion, working off the traditional meaning of the word) a self-contained story or 'fully' explored theme, musically and/or lyrically. Generally, they are quite long, but a minimum time length is silly.

Hence I'd consider The Knife and Get Em Out By Friday epics, while I wouldn't consider Epitaph an epic, even though it's longer. I think the serious issue with an epics top is that people completely disagree on what exactly an epic is. Plus, there's a terrifying chance that the rather mediocre The Gates of Delirium might win.

Yes. Yes indeed.

From what I've heard, and always changing.

1. Telegraph Road - Dire Straits
2. Tarkus - ELP
3. Get Em Out By Friday - Genesis
4. 2112 - Rush
5. Les Porches - Maneige
6. Pictures Of A City - King Crimson
7. Lady Fantasy - Camel
8. Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull (based on the music alone, it would have been higher, but it only gets in  by its parody of a traditional epic format)
9. And You And I - Yes
10. Islands - King Crimson

I think Sound Chaser is cut from the same mold but is a lot more refined.  I love that song.

I never had any problems listening to "Gates of Delirium"; on the contrary, I was pleasantly surprised by Yes, because usually they don't go into noisy territory and are a bit too tame for my taste (which is why "Close to the Edge" only gets 4 stars from me and not 5), but I can see why fans of Yes may have their problem with that epic. since I am used to epics like "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" or "Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandöh", which both are a lot noisier, "The Gates of Delirium" was not difficult to digest at all

It's not even so much the noisiness as it is that

1) they all just sound like they're playing random notes at times

and

2) there is that cool part where they all seem to come back together... but it takes far too long to get to

...and "Soon" isn't as, I dunno...."beautiful" as people make it out to be IMO.  I can absolutely see why it is so highly regarded, it's a technical masterpiece and a quintessential piece of prog... but can it stand up to the likes of Starship Trooper, Close To The Edge, and Awaken?... hmmm just not sure it can.  I really think the band was at it's best when Wakeman was making his classical influence heard.  I really miss the haunting church organ passages that are absent on Relayer.

as I said, I personally consider "The Gates of Delirium" to be a lot better than the in my opinion overrated "Close to the Edge". but we seem to come from the opposite sides of the prog spectrum

I also consider the first album of Hatfield and the North to be one great epic of 46:12 length. sure, the tracks all have different names, but musically flow into each other, and the album ends as it begins

In no order whatsoever. First the "obvious": (a bit unsure of the timing)
  • Genesis - Suppers Ready (22 min)
  • Yes - Close to The Edge (18 min)
  • Yes - The Gates of Delerium (24 min)
  • VDGG - A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers (23 min)
  • Pink Floyd - Shine on You Crazy Diamond (13+13 min)
  • Pink Floyd - Dogs (17 min)

And then some personal taste:

  • Bo Hansson - Migration Suite (16 min)
  • Bo Hansson - Storstad (11 min)
  • Eloy - Land of No Body (17 min)
  • Eloy - Light from Deep Darkness (14 min)
  • Caravan - Nine Feet Underground (22 min)
  • Caravan - Can't be Long now/Francoise/For Richard/Warlock (14 min)
  • Camel - Lady Fantasy (12 min)
  • Uriah Heep - Salisbury (16 min)
  • Hatfield and the North - Mumps (20 min)

And two that i see as epics, but are split in a bunch of songs:

  • Eloy - Dawn Part 1 (Awakening/Between the Times, Suite/The Sun Song/The Dance in Doubt and Fear/Lost, The Introduction) (22 min)
  • Eloy - Dawn Part 2 (Lost, The Decision/The Midnight Fight/The Victory of Metal Force/Gliding into Light and Knowledge/Je Reveil the Soleil/The Dawn) (25 min)
Now that was a waste of time!

Very trueClap. While in The Rotters' Club the various tracks can be considered as individual entities (more or less), on their self-titled debut it is not so, even if the tracks have separate titles - they can in fact be considered as movements of the same piece of music.

No Order...

1 Passion Play both parts! - Jethro Tull
2 Song for America - Kansas
3 Echoes - Pink Floyd (this one will never leave)
4 Yours is no Disgrace - Yes
5 Perpetual Change - Yes
6 Bring me to the Power - Yes
7 Mind Drive - Yes
8 Paradise/The Spell - Uriah Heep
9 Death Walks Behind You (the entire album lol) - Atomic Rooster
10 Aries - Supertramp (marvellous, seems like Jethro Tull, a pitty that the rest of the album does me nothing)

The Flower Kings - World of Adventures (13 min)
The Flower Kings - Big Puzzle (13 min)

The Flower Kings - I am the Sun (??+?? min)
Uriah Heep - Paradise / The Spell (12 min) (Unsure if it counts)
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (22+25min) (Unsure if it counts)

dot dot dot here's a little reminder for people who forgot the epics of a fairly good band:

1. Kohntarkosz, part I
2. Kohntarkosz, part II
3. Theusz Hamtaahk
4. MDK (Mekanik Kommandoh vers.)
5. K.A., part II
6. K.A., part III
7. Wurdah Itah
8. Retrovision (heh)
9. Udu Wudu (Jannick Top vers.)
10. Riah Sahiltaak
...
(plus four ten minute+ tracks on their debut but people have scary min. reqs. for their epics these days)
...
11. Tubular Bells, part I
